Fire Service, PMH get equipment

Some of the equipment received

The Dominica Fire Service and the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) received gifts of firefighting and emergency services related equipment valued at approximately $55,000 from Celebrity Summit, part of Royal Caribbean Corporation.

The donation comes after the Fire Service and the hospital provided care to some 16 passengers aboard a bus which crashed in the vicinity of Roseau in 2009.

Director of Fleet Medical Operations for Celebrity Summit Steve Williams said that the handing over of this equipment signaled the start of what is to be a longstanding relationship between the Dominica Fire Service and Celebrity Summit.

“On behalf of the captain, officers and the staff of the Celebrity Summit, I want to thank you again for the help you offered our guests after the accident several years ago and this is small gift on behalf of Celebrity Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines to the Fire Service and the Hospital here in Dominica. It is small thanks for the great care and the hospitality that you showed our guests and its part of an ongoing program that we will be instituting to help support the Government of Dominica and provide them with some additional rescue and firefighting equipment over the next couple of years. The City of Tequesta (Florida) Fire Service have donated some firefighting protective clothing and over the next couple of years, will also be assisting in some of the training needs for the Fire Service here in Dominica,” Williams stated.

Chief Fire Officer Josiah Dupuis was on hand to receive the gif on behalf of the Service and relayed his delight and the gratitude of his officers upon receipt.

He remarked, “I would like to take this opportunity to express the gratitude of the Fire Department. I want to do that first on behalf of the Government of Dominica, the people of Dominica and certainly from the Department’s point of view we are extremely delighted by this tremendous gesture. Some of the equipment is going to the hospital, but I think critically, as first responders, we would respond to incidents before the cases get to the hospital. .”

He added, “I want to extend our profound gratitude for this equipment. I can see already that these are items that we will put into use immediately. I am also very encouraged by the fact that shortly after the handing over, we will be having some discussions to talk about ways that we can continue to build on the relationship we have already.”

The equipment includes external automatic defibrillators as well as defibrillators to be used at the hospital, two spinal immobilization devices or backboards, oxygen therapy equipment, firefighter bunker gear which will help protect them from fires as well as other equipment for the hospital.
