Linton says UWP can deliver 5,000 jobs in three years

Leader of the United Workers party, Lennox Linton, will be capable of delivering 5,000 new jobs in Dominica within three years of a UWP victory at the polls.

Linton, who was addressing a UWP Jobs and Economic Growth Forum on Thursday morning, stated that it is his party’s vision to take Dominica to a place where it can claim the glory that is implicit in the country’s national anthem and its full development potential.

“We fully intend to deliver a wide range of goods and services that anticipate the global needs in Markets and exceed those needs,” he said. “We will walk a mile in the shoes of our citizens here in Dominica and around the world. Together we will develop and grow a model green economy that rewards enterprise, put our people to work for decent wages, gives a fair chance to all and secures our place in the global trade of goods and services,” he said.

According to him, the party intends to embark on a comprehensive air and sea access initiative to include the development of an international airport, the modernization of sea ports, a Dominican-based airline and a high speed ferry service.

“Together we will create a new economy,” Linton stated. “A new economy where the growth in the total value of goods and services will be in the region of 6-7 percent per annum, a far cry from the 1 percent and the -2 percent that we have been seeing in recent years.”

The party leader said the the driver for the “new economy” will include agriculture among others. “Tourism is one of the growth drivers, we will focus on light manufacturing, we will focus on information, communication, technology services, focus on financial services, focus on drivers like the construction industry and we will be tightly engaged with the business of renewable energy,” he stated.

He said that the party will also be looking at the sports, water, and cultural industries.

“With the new focus, with a better understanding of the engines of growth of the economy, with the willingness to engage with the stakeholders with our own skills and competencies, within the UWP we believe that the growth drivers of this economy that we will energize are capable of delivering 5,000 new jobs in the first three years of the UWP administration and the strategic planning in that regard will be clear,” he said.

I am impressed with Mr Linton’s communications skills.
But some of these ideas have been around for decades.
What in his character gives me hope that he can achieve our Dream of an International Airport, etc. . . Not much!
How is he involved in his constituency or community?
Why hasn’t he (and most of the other great minds on display at the forum) been able to play a part in employing less creative and fortunate Dominicans?
Maybe its time that we truly live the saying that “Dominica is ours to build”

Anyone who listened to the symposium would not be making these stupid comments about how the UWP intends to go about creating the jobs.

    That was outlined clearly!

All you Dominicans just too damn hypocrite and bad mind. Now that the UWP is taking a positive step towards discussion on job creation it suits your agenda to dismiss their ideas and yes, plans, because of your partisan views.

These comments tell me that you people are not interested in national development but rather in petty party politics that will take Dominica nowhere.

So don’t pretend that you care about growth when what you really care about is your party staying in power. Wicked hypocrites!

My fellow Dominicans it seems alot of you dont understand what went on thursday, the uwp is showing us plans that were there before plus plans they also have to create 5000 Jobs. now for those who say that only trinidad can produce such numbers, do a poll as to the amount on unemployed ppl verse the amount working. verse the amount of people in the country, we are at about 55 to 60 thousand people on island. guys we are more than what is needed to produce more than 5000 jobs, i know it hurts that to see the truth. back in 1995 to 2000 we were climbing in jobs our numbers increased now in 2013 at such a moden age were are at the bottom, jobs closeing down one by one look at lime, and theres more to come, the Pm promised so may jobs look two months pass and yet nothing, but doh frade for those who support DLP when UWP takes office we will give u guys jobs to, we are not one sided. change is a must.

You are entitled to your views. Just that I reject them with a lot of contempt, since some are purposely disingenuous. Firstly I find Linton is an excellent communicator, he has presente4d himself to the people of Dominica and this is enough evidence to me that he is extremely interested in his country, given his track record of honesty. He kept corrupt greedies in government in check and this to me is tremendous. He caused the return of over $500 000.00 to our treasury, and that to me is phenomenal. Will you ever contribute this amount? I can’t since I only earn a pittance for a month of hard work. The people of his constituency has called upon him to represent them, this is extraordinarily good. He is exposing malfeasance and in-your-face corruption in public office, and this is welcoming and comforting to me.
DOMINICA IS YEARNING FOR MORE MEN/WOMEN OF HIS STATURE.
I LOVE HIM!HE TRUELY LIVES THE SAYING. HE IS A CLASSIC CASE OF A PATRIOTIC MAN!

It is too co-incidental with many “handles” that don’t usually appear in the commentary section. The reporting and presentation of actual data always unnerves politicians, particularly those, who thrive on emotional statements, presented as facts. The Govt. better be careful this will not backfire when the next scandal will be revealed.

There is no caribbean Island maybe apart from Trinidad & Tobago that can produce 5000 Jobs in the next three (3) years and that is a fact!!!!

If it could have being done there would not have being an economic melting down in the Eastern Caribbean at this time.

The financial institution in Dominica will not be able to finance these so call capital project Mr.Linton is talking about. Therefore there will be a need for massive foreign Investments.

These foreign Investors will have to deal with world financial Institutions which at this time is not incline to entertain small Island countries economies with low interest rate and very small population.

Agriculture can not be the bread winner of any of these caribbean states due to the high cost of production, labour and geographic photography (land mass).

He talk about manufacturing, where is the machinery and raw materials coming from? What are the items that we will be manufactured? What are the markets available at this time? Can we produce products at a lower cost than Latin American or Asia at this time?

Ladies and gentlemen I can go on and on… But unless Mr.Linton does not give more details of his economic plan this is just a vote winning statement!!

I know many of you may want him to win the next elections but you must not drink the wine without first tasting and smelling it.!!!

He has all the right to say what he wants, when he wants, but he is duty bound to explain to the voters where is he getting the capital and investors from???

I am not for UWP OR DLP but both Party must tell the people how are they going to finance major capital programs.

I think people of Dominica must take time off to read international news so as to make the best decision before a ballot is cast.

Barbados which has a larger economy than Dominica had to cut back on it education program for its nationals at UWI in term of financial assist.

St.Lucia has recorded a higher rate of tourist arrival more than Barbados yet this cannot get them out of their financial mess as the largest economy in the OECS.

With all that said, Mr.Linton and his team must now show the people of Dominica a road map and a blue print to these FIVE THOUSAND (5000) news jobs.

What you have to offer to international business? Any tax free environment? Maybe free economic citizenship to every business starting operations on the island? Linton can now talk of international airport, ferry and other stuff all because the present Prime Minister is taking care of Dominicas roads, bridges, schools and hospitals. Since all this significant projects will be taken care of Linton believes that this is the perfect opportunity to talk about the possibility of building an international airport. Is he accepting that the ruling government is actually doing a fantastic job

Empty political promises. You don’t have to be in government to establish a Dominican airline, you don’t have to be in government to invest in agriculture, you don’t have to be in government to establish a ferry service, you don’t have to be in government to create employment and you certainly don’t have to be in government to export water, Athie we still waiting. Most of the initiatives mentioned with the exception of port improvement and the international airport are intiatives that have to be undertaken by the private sector. So my question is,Why can’t all these brilliant minds with all thes brilliant ideas create a company to make their dreams a reality?

The leader of the United Workers Party does have an ambitious job creation plan that is very politically enticing. According to him, he intends to create 5,00 jobs in five years. Is that feasible? I hope so for the future economic well being of our youth.
According to the plan , he intends to embark on a comprehensive air initiative that will include an international airport ,modern seaports etc. These ideas are great . But let’s be real here. Dominica’s population will not make it happen. Again prospective investors who always play an important role to keep airports afloat, will think of other places where international airport already exist to do business. I believe ideas that would make our airport more accommodating to travelers would be more practical at this time.
Linton also mentioned other drivers such as agriculture, tourism, light manufacturing. However he failed to give any specifics as to how these economic vehicles would help generate jobs. The leader of the UWP also stated in the plan that the party will also be “looking at water” as an economic tool. I really believe your so called new focus should have had water as the #1 growth engine.
Today oil and water are two most sought after commodities the world over. Dominica has so much fresh water and if utilized efficiently, can generate funds that would help your anticipated new economy grow to the level that you envisioned and more.

Politicians have a tendency to look for solutions elsewhere when the remedy steers right at them. It is fair to say that the PM current economic plan for Dominica is wanting, but it is also true to say that he is doing his best given the economic and political cards that he has to deal with.

Skeritt and Regie fooled Dominicans on three occasions when they promised 400, 300,and 500 jobs respectively, the supporters of the DLP believed their masters. Mr. Linton now promises 5000 jobs in three years, they are over the place asking for paracetamol because that promise has become a big headache to them. The difference between the DLP and the UWP is that, during the time of the UWP, money was meeting money, now with the DLP in power, money is not making money.

The winds of change has been blowing across the Eastern Caribbean for a long time. I honestly do not know whether Mr.Linton’s resume has provided concrete evidence for his projections. However, the time has come for these winds to blow across Dominica’s bow.

Even if there is not a change in power, as I believe that Mr. Linton needs to grow- even if many including myself was doubtful about Obama’s winning, I sure hope UWP can win some more seats to allow the parliamentary system of Government to be realized; thereby, allowing the people to hold a true voice in government no matter who is in the opposition.

One thing I can say about Mr Linton, he sounds to be an eloquent speaker; and can communicate his ideas for the country’s progress very well. Now with that plan for 5K jobs, we’d have to take a more critical look at the sources of these jobs. If we are talking about jobs generated by the international airport or new hotels, manufacturing, other new investments… then I’d have to ask to give some more details to support these claims. But I’m impressed with the vision. I hope they can put that into a comprehensive development plan for the country. Development in DA seems to be so haphazard, there seems to be no forethought about how and why we do things. And it’s evident in all we do… how we build roads, where we place buildings, etc etc. We need planners to help ensure that these development plans are strategic, meaningful and positions Dominica as a shining beacon of economic progress and stability in the Caribbean. I think they’re on to something… start with the infrastructure… better modern ports; an international airport, standardized roads, affordable/cheap energy, comprehensive land use and environmental policies, etc etc. We need to get Dominica out of the beggarship mentality…

so far some of you are focusing on the 5000 jobs mentioned, but what about the ideas for agriculture and the future of the health of Dominicans? A strong focus is being discussed on trying to revive agriculture .

Climate change is also being discussed.

Listen my brothers and sisters about the facts on saving our beautiful land and constitution.

This panel is brilliant ,knowing most of the brilliant minds speaking today ,I can safely say that it is because of the love for their country that they are trying to save Dominica and it’s people.

Lets rally behind these men and women , and lets help bring about change.

LET YOUR VOTE SPEAK FOR YOU MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS. VOTE FOR CHANGE.

The GOVT in power is not creating any jobs although they have total control of the country financial purse/policy and we will not mandate they create jobs or step down.
But folks are asking the opposition to create jobs first before consideration. When the opposition have no control over country’s development policies and finance.

SMH….It would be more beneficial to critic if you may the opposition plans proposed for growing the economy and creating jobs.

According to a blogger, Linton just give us the International airport as soon as you become PRIME MINISTER,the others will come slowly afterwards.

      • October 31, 2013

I think building the International Airport will certainly bring jobs, but the question is, who will be employed? The contractors/engineers come with their people.

Having an International Airport will definitely expand air traffic, enabling more people to visit at leisure. To create 5,000 jobs within three years is near impossible for little Dominica.

well two can play this game what has skerrit and current govt.done to enhance and face these financial crises .borowing monies from china and only chines workers work even if they employ dominicans at what ratio and at what skill level.
not to long the chinies said that dominicans were not skilled enough .
that means no jobs in a recession people wake up and smell the cofee .
all that is happining is buisness closing down or workers are being made redundant.

It’s sad to see that when someone brings forth ideas to propell the country forward that they are shut down. The Dominica labour party has been in power for over 9 years. In that 9 year’s what sustainable job activity have they completed. The PM promisses 500 jobs then it went down to 400 to be delivered by the end of October. Where is it? There are more students leaving college every year and not enough jobs to help them all. With an economy on the verge of collapse we need new management. I believe that her, if you had your time and you made it work then fine, stay. But if you things have gotten worse then its time to hand the torch to someone else to see what they can be done. At the end of their time you evaluate their policies and accomplishments also theor downfalls, and you VOTE whether they should be in office.

    • BEB
      October 31, 2013

How can u expect that the Govt. will beable to employ all the students leaving college? That is why they are advising them to create their own business becoming self employed, plus the private sector will beable to employ the rest

      • October 31, 2013

I do not think people expect the Government to employ all the students that graduate from college yearly; however, those in the private sector are hot hiring either. They rather OVERWORK the employees that they have instead of hiring new ones.

All these promises sound nice, and good easier
access to Dominica is paramount for enhancing
economic activity especially the tourism sector
which could see more stay over tourists, and may
see an increase of Diaspora travel to Dominica.
      Agriculture,business friendly initiatives,
Training students with skills that can empower
them to be job creators other than office workers would boost the economic engine of the Island. What we need to hear from the opposition
should be how much all these will cost, and where
will they obtain the funds to do so? If they can explain the financial aspect of their plan, then I am sold.

For too long politicians undervalue the intelligence and wisdom of the people of Dominica. They use empty promises as a winning strategy. They speak without purpose to gain the people’s favor but ALWAYS fail to deliver. The people on the other hand never take the time to question the candidates’ motive – which is self-gratifying in 99.9% cases. If the people really want to make better decisions on electing the best candidate who can move them forward, they need to change their mindsets.

    1. Break loose from the chains of political tradition. Just because your parents voted one party all their lives doesn’t mean you have to continue on the bandwagon. Different leaders have different motives, aptitude and principles.

    2. Increase knowledge by reading more, or listening to didactic programs that can help you make wiser decisions. You will be less vulnerable to deception.

    3. Be ready to identify candidates’ motives – weigh pros and cons of their “promises” and see whether such is feasible or something more likely to happen in the Cinderella story.

4.Get familiar with their leadership skills. Are their current leadership skills exemplary?

A leader is never self-focused but people focused. A leader is one who has been to the place where he intends to lead his followers. A leader is one who is willing to make sacrifices for the people over whom he has a charge!

    Dominica needs leadership!Servant-leadership

That’s because a lot of people have been unemployed. A lot of people are unemployed in D/A so it should not be difficult to hire 1,000 people in a few years.

Mr Linton are you serious??? I Understand that you will say anything to get people aboard your ship but we are the smaller countries in the world, and if the bigger countries like the UK and USA can’t revive from this global economic downfall then who are we to revive. 5000 jobs??? Give me a break.

Lennox, you are dreaming! This is what UWP does best…talk. This is such an attempt to manipulate the people. We are tired of all this talk. Most citizens are educated enough to know about job creation, however, we lack the capital to make it a reality. We do not need any parrots reiterating the the pointers which we have already acquired. We need the funding now. We need jobs now. UWP, you are no option, you are a disaster. Shame!

Linton, in politics timing is everything. You guys are throwing out too many things out at one time. Give people a chance to absorb one thing at a time.

If you delivery too much policy information at one time, most of it will be lost in all the other traffic.

I care less about the total number of jobs to be created, versus creating a stable economic climate with lower taxes that will promote and enhance private sector investment in Dominica.
Proper air access just has to get done. There is no way around it. We can forget about development if we do not get this airport done.
I have lived to see good roads and a stadium. I pray that I will see an international airport in my beloved Dominica.

listening to and viewing the forum is very refreshing and stimulating to me. Its such a long time we in Dominica have seen a forum or symposium at that level of information, the quality of the speakers and presenters, even the attendees. I had forgotten that Dominica had such trained, informed and forward looking professionals right here in Dominica amongst us. Everything has been so stunted, covered up, oppressed and repressed in the country for these past years under the arrogance of the Prime minister who feels that nothing should happen beyond him, that to talk about progress is an offence to him. I feel hopeful.
