More colourful houses for Roseau

Finishing touches on one of the houses

Five more houses in the city of Roseau are now much more colourful, after being subjected to a serious paint job under an initiative described as the Roseau Paint-a-thon.

Volunteer teams and qualified painters were involved in the June 2-3 exercise aimed at brightening up the city.

It’s the second year running that that Discover Dominica Authority exercise has targeted specific houses for a proper paint job, with these houses given a makeover at no cost to their owners.

The initiative, supported by the National Bank of Dominica, Josephine Gabriel and Company, and Harris Paints Dominica, aims at beautifying buildings in the capital with historic and architectural appeal.

The painting exercise formed part of the island’s annual Tourism Awareness Month activities.

The painted houses are located on Cork Street and Hillsborough Street.

Well…ehhhhhmmm!!!!!!.yes good initiative! However, I would prefer to see some modern 3-4-5 storey buildings replacing some of these little dilapidated shacks in Roseau. Yes, the bright colours are great, yes they have their place in preserving our heritage, history and architecture etc., etc, etc, but the city needs a renaissance. However, in light of the fact that the land space of the city cannot be increased, we need to use our limited resources more wisely and this necessitates the use of our airspace to build. I am sure Jays would agree. So in the short term, fine let’s paint these houses and inject a sense of optimism in the society during these hard economic times. In the medium to long term, however, we need to rebuild the congested city and modernize it with new buildings.

In that regard, I must say the addition of the new bridges across the Roseau River, the construction of the back roads, access to goodwill, the parking facility across the rive, the stadium etc, etc all have contributed tremendously to the improved image and face of the city. Inasmuch, as we admit that the national priority is misplaced in building the $27 million plus state palace, it too will add to the modernization of the city when completed.

I am sorry-Peeping Tom and others- I could not continue the kumbaya chorus of praise to the initiative. May our varying ideas for development of our city contend to the benefit of all.

Some how I do not feel the love. Some of these buildings need rehabilitation before they are painted. Some should be moved to create space for proper side walks.

Lovely project. Being a Paint Decorator, i strongly would like the painters to protect them self with mask and eyes prtections cause most of the old houses were painted with oil paint many years ago, and it was contaminated with lead and its a danger to your health and your suroundings, so cover up !!!!

Fabulous job! Great initiative! I love a colourful ambience and I think making the city so flamboyant will certainly uplift the spirit of its residents, visitors and commuters!!

The Roseau City Council should continue to support this impressive initiative and this should also be embraced by the residents.

Congratulations to the volunteers, residents, Discover Dominica Authority, supporters, and all other stakeholders for a job well done!
