Officials behind the new Grotto Home for the Homeless project say they expect the EC$2.5 million facility to be fully up and running and housing 100 residents in more comfortable surroundings by 2014.
However they are appealing to members of the public to help fund the new home being constructed on a two acre property in Bellevue Rawle, Stockfarm.
Spokesman for the board of directors, Parry Bellot, says while encouraged by the level of assistance promised so far, more donations are required to ensure that the facility becomes a reality in the shortest possible time.
“We are getting and anticipating a lot of donations. We have a commitment from one Japanese agency. The Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) will be considering an application we have made and we do anticipate as we get a little further on as people see things happening they will be inclined to come forward,” Bellot said during a tour of the construction site by government officials and others.
Community Development Minister Gloria Shillingford said there that she was impressed with the progress made on the project.
“As I look at the structure I am really happy to see the amount of work done so far. I can see the kind of commitment there is to be able to help our underprivileged and poor people who have nowhere else to go. That says a lot about the committee and the pastors and all those involved in lending a hand,” she said.
The project is being done in three phases.
The estimated 50 persons being cared for by the Grotto Home are being temporarily housed at the Dominica Club.
To the Prime Minister, instead of sending the young men and women to jail because they cannot pay a fine have them help construct the home instead. In that way we would have more space to keep the more vicious criminals in jail for their designated amount of time.
I will support this a 100%,great project.
But who is she neh? I was wondering myself. Where is Ann Solomon? Is she no longer at the Grotto Home? Just wanted to know. Dominican outside Dominica.
