Each Dominican household will be allowed to collect a barrel free of custom import duty and service charge this Christmas.
Government has agreed to make tail gate charges lower from December 13 2011 to January 12 2012, Minister for Ports Rayburn Blackmoore has disclosed.
He said people will only be required to pay just $10 for port charges, as government acknowledges that barrel shipping to Dominica is regular during this time of year.
“Each household will be given the opportunity to bring one barrel, box, crate or a carton of equivalent size to a regular barrel,” Blackmoore revealed.
The initiative applies only for people receiving barrels for personal consumption and not for commercial use.
“Normally somebody receiving a regular barrel, a crate or a box or a drum, would have paid Dominica Air and Sea Port Authority $26 to $27,” Blackmoore noted.
all you have to do is put the barrel on somebody name(somebody that works at the customs and you will get a break)
Guess it not working yet.. cause my coworker went for a barrel today (Dec 15th) and had to pay $180 something.
Antigua is $1.
The Antiguan Gov’t is happy these tough economic times are being deferred a bit, by contributions to its citizens by relatives.
could someone explain to me how this is suppose to be an xmas gift? if you do the maths its only a 10 to 15 dollars reduction in cost??????/ wats all the celebration about???
thank you…..This makes no sense….What about the $100 to $200 they charge you.
The domincan diasporas coming home to retire for good should be extended the offer also, we are building houses , creating jobs when we build,we buy materials, opening business ecxtra. so we need a break from customs, a one time break when we ship our container.. coming home . miss charles had implented something to that effect i dont know if it is still in effect , any one ? please let us know [the diasporas.]
That is already in place….even exemption from VAt do a little research before you speak. Is we the Dominicans who stay here and struggle to keep Dominica going that NEVER get any exemptions.
@PEEPING TOM ,YOU NOT EXPECTING A BARREL REASON WHY YOU”RE TALKING THAT CRAP.
OK, so we are talking about the tailgate charge.
The rest of the duties and VAT and whatsoever is still to be paid.
Yep… just an attempt to distract us from the new truthful revelations Lennox Linton revealed to us the other day.
With millions going into offshore banks through passport sales and diplomatic status rent, the citizenry get a little crumb from the table and expect me to sing horay. A free barrel is still nothing compare to the $90,000 dollar duty free vehicle that privileged people enjoy; 2 million U.S dollar sale of passports; garbage bin deals, Villa ownership, land ownership; swiss and cayman bank accounts. The vagaries of a corrupt system – a free barrel at Xmas and the next level train is on its way to glory land -life is a dream.
DNO, most of the comments here are correct. We hardly believe Import Duty, Environmental levy, customs service charge and VAT will be levied.
Could you simply double check, including with customs management, and come back with a clear statement ?
I applaude the move by government. I’ve been requesting this Xmas perk for a long time since this benifit has beed provided by other governments in the region.
We need a duty free port. No more customs collecting.
YA AND THE GOVERMENT WOULD LOSE 80 PERCENT OF REVENUE .. LAST TIME CUSTOMS STRIKE .. GOVERNMENT COULDNT PAY PUBLIC SERVANTS ON TIME
On December 14th? That should have been implemented a month ago because most of the barrels reach already.
Well it has been left very late in the day to give out this information. Most people have had their barrels shipped and cleared. Don’t look for a refund………………………
The most anyone would save is $17.00… For port charges…NOT CUSTOMS…..dont be fooled!……
Yeah that got me. Nothing is free here.
I totally agree that custom duties are too high and some of these custom workers sure believe that the profits will go into their pockets when they try to squeeze a poor man’s pocket.I understand that we all have jobs to do however they show no form of empathy to assist /no form of customer service/ Let’s not even begin to talk about the shed at the back of coast guard in fond cole….these officers need to be re-evaluated!!!! might i add thank you blackmore!!!
they know all who getting the ‘lower prices’
don’t let them fool u
WHICH POOR MAN .. A CROOK CAN BE A POOR MAN .. ALL YOU SPOIL IT FOR ALL YOU SELF .. WANNA BRING DOWN THINGS FOR YOUR NEIGHBOUR TO SELL AND SAYIN IS FOR YOU .. JACK PAYIN FOR PAUL ..
ADMIN .. I TELL YOU MADE A MISTAKE IN THE HEADIN .. YOU DELETE MY COMMENT .. BUT REFUSE TO CORRECT IT .. NOT CUSTOMS DUTY .. PORT CHARGES YOU SUPPOSE TO PUT
I sent my comments 3 hours ago stating that I had called customs and was advised that there is no exemption on import duty and/or service charge or barrels. I cautioned readers to verify with Customs 1st to avoid disappointment. The comment was waiting approval for hours while all others were posted. Now it has been deleted. Why would DNO refuse to post such a comment?
Just to update readers: no import duty and no service charge went into effect this morning as Customs only got the necessary authorisation then. I was able to benefit this morning.
Its about time.
I thought every Christmas Dominicans get that kind of deal…or either really low fees. It’s not the first that i’ve heard of this …
Has that been communicated to Customs and/or DASPA? Woosh me torreeee
Not a word…
NEVER WILL ..
It is unfortunate that the custom officers are not aware of this. The officers only heard about this on the radio this morning.
So let me get this str8, it’s the tailgate fee that’s cheaper? Or is it a $10 dollar fee no matter the contents of the barrel?
Cuz the latter would just be awesome!!!
If this is the case, this should become an annual event, almost like a tax return or a thanksgiving day sale, etc.
Stupz…I have already cleared my barrel
I frequently send barrels to Dominica therefore I take this opportunity to thank Mr. Blackmoore. Three of barrels are due to arrive tomorrow and it is good to know that one will be duty free.
COME BACK HERE AND TELL US IF YOU GET IT FREE .. I DONT THINK SO … SMOKE ALONE THEM POLITIANS LIKE TO BLOW
Dumb in NY lol! 10025 East side You’ve in the big apple get wise. Poor you give a smart D/can in DA ur papers and go back morne whacette.
Custom duties are to high in Dominica period.
BARREL economy! That’s what that saving our behind in this country.
I do not believe this. I mean not even 12 days before Christmas? How long does it take for a barrel to get to Dominica? The intention was good but, this was poor planning on the Minister’s part. You get a F for your effort.
It’s E for Effort
IF you use Amerijet and post it from lets say Texas on a Saturday, it gets here on Tuesday
IS EVERYBODY THAT LIVING IN AMERICA? WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO AMERIJET? ARE YOU AMERIJET’S SPOKESPERSON?
GARCON WE TALKIN ABOUBT BARRELS .. BARRELS .. AMERIJET DONT CARRY BARRELS ..
its a good thing they are doing to me its too late to tell us that right now i shop for thing on sale to send home and when it gets there its expensive to get out of custom man
some caribbean countries are doing it as well and it really helps a lot, thank you thank u even doe my mum got her barrel already may next year i welcome it.
Dominicans are priceless. Do good is MA do bad is MA? what gives? Some people will benefit from the free barrel bondieu. A little is plenty
What about de VAT????
BLACKMORE IS NOT IN CHARGE OF CUSTOMS .. CUSTOMS RUN UNDER FINANCE .. BLACKMORE IS IN CHARGE OF PORT AUTHORITY .. EVERY YEAR GOVERMENT SAY THAT AND THE PUBLIC ALWAYS GETS IT WRONG ..GOVERNMENT WOULD NEVER WANT TO LOSE DUTY ON BARRELS .. DEY GAININ MORE THAN A HUNDRED FOR EACH BARREL
That being the case. makes no sense.
DNO can we get some more information please. For example in Grenada, you simply pay $1.00 and get your barrel. Does this mean that we simply pay $10 and receive our barrel? Thanks DNO.
Don’t get your hopes too high my brother.
That’s just a $17 discount but all the other customs charges still there.
MR.BLACKMOOORE ,
THE DECISION YOU HAVE TAKEN IS NOT A BAD ONE, BUT TODAY IS THE 14TH OF DECEMBER ,IT IS 12.57 IN ENGLAND .THE MAJORITY OF MY FAMILY LIVE IN DOMINICA AND THERE ARE MORE DOMINICANS IN THE SAME SITUATION HERE ALSO.WE HAVE A VERY COLD AND STORMY WEATHER HERE AT THIS MOMENT EVEN WITH THE LOST OF HOUSES ETC.
DO’NT YOU THINK THAT IT WOULD BE MUCH MORE BETTER AND ADVANTAGEOUS FOR ALL DOMINICANS OVERSEAS TO GET SUCH AN INFORMATION MUCH MORE EARLIER BECAUSE CHRISTMAS IS NOT IN JANUARY.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW SOMEONE FEELS TO HEAR FROM THERE FAMILY’S MOUTH THAT THEY WANT THIS OR THAT ,BUT IS UNABLE TO PAY CUSTOMS TO CLEAR THE GOODS?
I ORDER THINGS VERY OFTEN BECAUSE I AM A SALES PERSON HERE IN ENGLAND I DO NOT PAY FOR ANY THING BECAUSE TO BE CLEAR AND NO ONE ELSE DOES EITHER.WHEN I TALK ABOUT THIS TO PEOPLE HERE THEY STILL DO NOT BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE IN POORER COUNTRIES ARE PAYING TO CLEAR OUT PARCELS.
I CAN OFFER MUCH MORE TO MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS BUT I AM NOT GOING TO SUPPORT PEOPLE IN POLITICS TO GET A BIGGER SALARY.
YOU KNOW VERY WELL THAT THIS IS A FORM OF BRIBERY TOWARDS A POPULATION WITH VERY LITTLE TO LIVE ON.
DOMINICANS ABROAD CAN HELP THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIEND MUCH MORE ,BUT THE CUSTOM CHARGES ARE TO HIGH AND THE THINGS THAT THEY CAN’T PAY FOR ARE TAKEN HOME BY THE PORT WORKERS. DO YOU THINK MR.BLACKMOORE THAT THIS IS A GOOD OPTION.
Aye your caps lock key stuck man…
blackmoore cannot take that decision because he is not the minister of finance, futhermore for the customs to enforce this duty free that would have to be a decision from parliament..
this is an irrational behaviour on the part of the minister. and he should give an apology to the nation for his poor judgement and lack of respect for the minister of finance..
lies, lies and more lies… wait for $10.00 dollar barrel..
NOW START BLASTING THE THUMBS DOWN… the truth will always remain the truth
I agree with you because to gather the goods for shipping takes months because it’s when we have the funds some of us wait for sales to purchase some of the items the family at home needs so because that is good of BLACKMOORE to give out his hand out at this time season I would have to agree that he should have announced the gesture of goodwill much earlier because barrels leaving from USA, CANADA,ENGLAND a much futher and for those countries it takes longer I mysel have sent barrels home suppose to reach there for Christmas never did reached after so the writer is correct whenever you a going to make those type of announcements make them way in advance think of the amount of funds it will generate for the ISLAND.
Any way thank you Mr.Blacbmoor for your christmas gift to us in the Diaspora.
True that but Amerijet gets your barrel here very quickly. FOr example, you post on Saturdays from Texas and it get’s here on the Tuesday flight.
If you want to send something for your family just do it and shout-up. your conversation is too political and does not help the situation. And please you make it sound like we are dieing here of hunger……….. sorry suger thats not the case, but thanks for sharing your concerns….NOTED.
The ship from England only arrived yesterday, sothey have time.
what gives? an essay nah? stupes. so much could be said in much less words!
YU TO RUDE, AND OUT OF PLACE, YOU WANT TO TELL THE MAN HOW TO DO HIS WORK. WELL JUST
YOU MISSED OUT ON THAT.MR.BLACKMOORE JUST DO YOUR THING AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, IS NOT EVERYBODY THAT WILL GET A CHRISTMAS GIFT THIS YEAR, NOT EVEN AT THEIR HOMES.( APPRECIATE )
WHICH GOOD WORK .. THEM MINSTERS LIKE TO TRICK THE PULBIC .. HE SHOULD COME AND SAY ONLY APPLIED TO PORT CHARGES .. YOU KNOW DOMINICANS DONT LIKE TO READ .. THEY STILL THINK THAT PORT AND CUSTOMS IS THE SAME THING ..
DNO, stop misleading your readers. The Minister responsible for Customs (Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit) has not given customs any instructions and you are using that to tell readers they have to pay $10…..to DASPA. Stop lying to the people and send them Fond Cole to look like fools. NO DUTY FREE
gullible, gullible are the dumbinican people for they seekth not god wisdom but their trust in man, money and the pleasures of the earth…
we are in the times where our spiritual and political leaders have invited false spirits into our land, so all we see is crime crime crime…
happy holiday
DONT BE FOOLED, DID YOU HEAR ANY LEGISLATION REGARDING TO THIS FALSE INFORMATION BLACKMOORE IS PUTTING OUT THERE..
DONT YOU IDIOTS KNOW THAT TO WAIVE CUSTOMS DUTIES ON THAT LEVEL IT HAS TO GO TO PARLIAMENT…
I LOVE READING THOSE FOOLS COMMENTS LIKE THANK YOU MR BLACKMOORE,,, WAIT AND SEE
Great but way too late for me to post a barrel in time for Christmas. Next time announce it at an appropriate time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Then my family can benefit too!
It was about time…that has been happening in all the other islands for years..Thank you, I will start shopping. Receiving it in January is just as fine
Thank you
All the other charges that add up to more than the price of the barrel will that be reduce? thats how you guys play on the blinded Dominicans.
It appears you are the blinded one letting personal politicss get in your way.. the article stated free of customs duty and import service charges…. not just DASPA charges. Please take your time to read before you try to misnform domncans
YOU THAT HAVE IT WRONG .. HE IS IN CHARGE OF PORT NOT CUSTOMS .. CUSTOMS DUTIES REMAIN THE SAME .. AND YES I WORK ON THE PORT
why now you government want to approve this on a barrel.eleven more days before christmas and most people already clear their barrels for christmas, and if you had just approve that at least a month in advance more people would try something but no you did that late .remember unjust things dont last forever.
I wonder if I can use my receipt to get a refund.
Very good initiative,I hope the government is able to do more of this in the future.
SOOOOO WHEN IS ELECTIONS AGAIN?
BACK TO THE SAME OLD TRICKS
Oh yeah, elections are right around the corner. So, this manifestation of your caring government is just another election gimmick.
Mehnnn….!!!!!!!
Peeping Tom, Why dont you get a life and stop being so negative!
i get all hype up and excited thinking d govie goin to give me a wonderful xmas by clearing my barrel free wee …mehn these people just like to publicise nothing eh..all just publicity stunts..could do without that man…i think we can be given a much fairer christmas gift man
LAST YEAR THEY DID IT AND PPL FALL FOR IT .. IS LIKE THE SAME THING .. THEY SAY NO DUTY ON EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL .. YOU GO CUSTOMS CLEAR SOMETHING EDUCATIONAL YOU STILL PAY .. STOP FOOLIN PPL TELL THEM THEY HAVE TO PAY VAT AND SO ON .. EDUCATE PPL .. TOO MANY PPL DONT KNOW WHAT CHARGES YOU PAY FOR ON THE PORT ..
Am I understanding that it is only the DASPA fee that has been reduced? what about the othe rcharges like the VAT, Environmental Levy and the duty.
Why don’t we just shut down the country, “bitter sweet”? Some people…!!!!!
SMH!
No duty and service fees. Your normal charges are Import duty, customs service charge, environmental service charge, vat and port charges. Per the article, i imagine the duty and service fees are waived. Thus Vat and port charges are what you will pay.
Merry Christmas Dominicans.
THANK YOU MR. BLACKMOORE, MERRY CHRISMAS.
