On Thursday, May 12th Hon Parliamentary Representative, Justina Charles presented two cheques to the Chairman of the Grand Bay Village Council, Edward Registe, for a drainage project at Centre and Bala Park road construction.

The first cheque exceeding $43,000 was presented for payment to the contractor, Bernard Jno Baptiste, for a drain construction project which was not initially part of the Centre road contract.

“I spoke with the Hon Prime Minister who is the Minister for Finance to solicit funds for the drain. The contractor was able to construct the drain having gotten clearance from the Finance Minster so the money is basically to settle payments for the drainage work.”

The Grand Bay MP also presented a cheque of $100,000 for the construction of the Capeche main road leading to the inside of Bala Park.

Bernard Jno Baptiste will also be the contractor for that project which will be done in phases.

“The Bala Park Road is dirt; it has never been surfaced… mostly due to funds. We have gotten the estimates which exceeds $600,000 for all of the roads in Bala Park. It may be a little more because the road deteriorated due to the weather conditions so this $140,000 is just the beginning of the work to be undertaken.

“There are some areas which are very bad and we have to look at them but people have been lobbying for the first tranche of funds. So we are starting work at the entrance of the Capeche Main Road. We’ll be covering 250 metres. Work will start soon after Fete Isidore when the council settles the arrangements with the contractor.”

Hon Charles acknowledged that there are other roads in the constituency to be addressed as soon as possible.

The Grand Bay MP’s objective is to ensure that all roads in her constituency are completely surfaced.

Chairman of the Grand Bay Village Council, Edward Registe, also expressed the council’s interest in improved road access.

“We want to thank the MP and the Central Government Department for really listening to that plea to bring development and improvement to the community. We look forward to the continued development of roads in Grand Bay. When you bring roads, it helps with construction, access, emergencies and so many other things.

“I want to tell the Hon. Parliamentary Representative and the [Finance] Minister thank you and we are certainly looking forward to a lot more in Grand Bay for the comfort and development of the people who continue to stand solidly with the Dominica Labour Party Government.”

What are the people of Salisbury Coulibistrie; Marigot; Roseau North; Wesley and Woodfordhill and the rest of Dominica that Skerrit chooses to ignore waiting for to make a profound statement. How much longer will this selective distribution of TAX payers be allowed to continue. Is Dominica part of the real world? or have our people just given in to this ruthless bunch of RECALCITRANTS.

Duminicans are the best. I agree not even the people living in the jungle so moronic. Did you know last week the native people of Brazil took to the streets to demand the government keep away from their land. For 15 years the government has failed to assist local people in any ECONOMIC project that would help bring income, raise standard of living…… why? 15 years of Road building not nation building. Smh

MR. Registe you said it well, once you dont support the Government there is nothing in the bag for you. Therefore the farmers of Salisbury do not stand a chance for receiving anything from this Government for their feeder roads. I guess as some labourits would say govt is not responsible for feeder roads. Only in Dominica. God is not asleep.

Good that roads are being improved. But based on cost of West Coast Rd, and that proposed bridge, I guess we are talking about less than a 100 ft of road?

Can I complain? No, it’s all good as it means ‘jobs’….till the project is done. However, I cannot help lamenting the lack of balls/initiative given to the lost opportunity to create an exponential number of jobs if you people who are also card-carrying Labor Party officials had only given an iota of effort to establish the MEDICAL SCHOOL in your area. Especially at the Center where it’s quiet for the students, low traffic, and security in the form of a brand new state-of-the-art police station right there in Center. Sad, but True!

Blackmore and the Possie fella in high crime areas always pushed and made more noise for their constituents, and they get these things in their area. But, you are satisfied, and want Grandbay people to be satisfied with a hundred thousand here or there? Figure it out.

Remember IGNORAMUS that we are all Dominicans and party politics should not be viewed as an evil by whoever loses, it is supposed to be part of our Democracy.

I wonder what is the status of that road in Salisbury that the Prime Minister promised was being repaired!!

The Honourable Lennox Linton, Hector “Spaggs” John, Ezekiel Bazil, Danny Lugay, and Joseph Isaack, according to dedicated Labourite Loyalists, are burning up with envy as they are unable to present a single check of $2.50 (two dollars and fifty cents) to the Village Councils of their respective constituencies. Thus, the popular saying: “Better to be RED than DEAD”! Opposition members, you need to find alternative sources of funding for the improvement of your constituencies. With this one-sided Administration you will not see a penny going to constituencies that was not won by the blessed Dominica Labour Party, except in the case of Roseau South where there is a strategic move to push Joshua Francis out and bring the young Mr. Jahisiah Benoit in. Opposition, your supporters were able to raise funds for your leader’s legal fees…now you must raise funds for the improvement of your communities. You are not only there to oppose but also to serve!

You are such a you know what!
      Central government has that responsibility.
Budgets are prepared for work to be done by a village council.
Local government funds are budgeted by cabinet That is not the function of opposition.

What funds did DLP bring to government while it was in opposition.
De issue was corruption in office.
Remind tony astaphan that he needs to bring that case to court cause it way overdue.
I can’t he still looking for evidence.

What is the role of an opposition in parliament?

      • May 18, 2016

Dear Dissident, do you live in a Constituency that was won by the Labour Party or a Constituency that was won by the UWP during the last General Election? Did you read what I wrote properly? Do you think that I was saying it is democratic, fair or right when the Government discriminates against constituencies that they did not win? The fact is, aside from being opposition members, the elected members of the United Workers Party are also the Parliamentary Representatives for their respective constituencies, which means that they are also charged with the duty of representing those constituencies by advocating and demanding that the Government provide funding and assistance for the enhancement, improvement and sustainability of communities under their (Opposition Members) charge. In the absence of political power or diplomatic persuasion to get the Government to do what it’s supposed to do, these elected officials MUST find other means!

Concern Citizen, in light of your inability to read slowly and comprehend exactly what was written, I will do you a favor and respond to you absent the disrespectful insults and name calling. I do not believe that the current Government’s practice of discrimination against constituencies that they did not win is either fair, right or even remotely justified. Yet, knowing the reality that the United Workers Party aspires to become the future Government of this Country, I would advise the elected members and officials of that party to fight this Government’s discrimination by finding alternative sources of funding to better their respective constituencies as much as they can WHILE IN OPPOSITION!!! Let Dominicans see that you’re doing ALL YOU CAN while in opposition and they just might wonder what more you would do if you had the resources of Government to work with. Do not be so quick to judge others. If you need clarification on what a person wrote just ask. Thank You!

Labour of Love it is the DUTY of Government to provide funds for ALL constiuancies not the Opposition.
Just the example of the corruptions that you are prepared to condone in the island.
