PM Skerrit said gov’t wants to work to eradicate pit latrines in Atkinson

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has pledged an initial $150,000 to the Atkinson Village Council as government continues its efforts to eradicate pit latrines across Dominica. “Those of us who grew up using the pit latrine know of the sense of pride when we started using a modern washroom,” he told the 16th Inaugural Meeting of the Atkinson Village Council last weekend. “I would like for us to work with the council for us to eradicate pit latrines in Atkinson. I am committing an intial $150,000 for that effort in Atkinson.” In October 2013, the government launched what was described as a “war on pit latrines” in Dominica, which form part of its Home Renovation and Sanitation Program. In the meantime, the prime minister said that the island continues to make significant strides in health care, pointing out that there are more nurses and doctors stationed at the hospital. “We have more trained nursed now in Dominica than we had 10, 15 or 20 years ago,” he said. “We have more doctors at the hospital than we had 10, 15 or 20 years ago. And we have more equipment at the hospital than we had 10, 15 or 20 years ago.” According to the prime minister, it is through his government that the Princess Magaret Hospital received an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). “I never knew that we never had one before 2005, and the doctors and nurses are saying to me, if we had this Intensive Care Unit before 2005, we assure you that we would have saved many lives in Dominica,” Skerrit said. He noted further that citizens are able to benefit from reasonably priced procedures done at the PMH, including a CT Scan at a minimal cost of EC$500. The government recently purchased a new CT Scan, Mammogram, and MRI amongst other equipment for the hospital. Plans are also underway for a new hospital which will be funded by the Chinese government, according to the prime minister.

Flushing toilet for all of Dominica… land of many rivers!!!!! Based on the UN MDG 7 “Ensure Environmental Sustainability” and we quote “The proportion of the population using an improved sanitation facility, total, urban, rural, is the percentage of the population with access to facilities that hygienically separate human excreta from human contact. Improved facilities include flush/pour flush toilets or latrines connected to a sewer, -septic tank, or -pit, ventilated improved pit latrines, pit latrines with a slab or platform of any material which covers the pit entirely, except for the drop hole and composting toilets/latrines. Unimproved facilities include public or shared facilities of an otherwise acceptable type, flush/pour-flush toilets or latrines which discharge directly into an open sewer or ditch, pit latrines without a slab, bucket latrines, hanging toilets or latrines which directly discharge in water bodies or in the open and the practice of open defecation in the bush, field or bodies or water. Definitions and a detailed description of these facilities can be found at the website of the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation at http://www.wssinfo.org.

reading these post just gives credence to the level of ignorance that still exists in Dominican society. What has UWP done for you lately?!! This is something that helps all Dominicans. To those saying that Dominican nurses were trained for ICU units in Jamaica… the Hospital didn’t have one… they had a waiting room… a waiting room is not ICU!! A waiting room is a death sentence!

“I never knew that we never had one before 2005, and the doctors and nurses are saying to me, if we had this Intensive Care Unit before 2005, we assure you that we would have saved many lives in Dominica,” Skerrit said.

My PM, I hope you not drinking or doing any of those things that causing people to get a high and start to talk nonsense. My Pm, look at how you destroying us with this statement.
1 My PM, between 2000-2005, you were an elected member of the DLP government and was a cabinet minister. So my PM, you mean to tell me that the cabinet never addressed the needs of the hospital so you could know we did not have a ICU at the PMH before 2005?

    2. My PM, in 2005 you had been the Prime Minister of Dominica for one year and you did not know the PMH did not have an ICU before 2005? My pm you causing people to say you either not being truthful or if you are, then as PM you are not concerned about our wellbeing since you did not know we never had an ICU until 2005.

    3. But My PM, if according to you ICU at the PMH saves many lives, then why did you not trust the PMH staff and equipment when you chose to give birth to your son in the USA? My PM, you really making people say we your supporters, are really stupid to vote for you know. My PM you exposing your base too much.

I hope when the mosquito start infesting the incomplete septic tanks and soakaways you Mr PM accept full responsible for your politically expediency. I hope when DOWASCO start their disconection programme you will be around to pay the water bills. I hope when the toilets block because of improper useage/lack of money to buy toilet paper you will go and unblock them and start to supply the toilet paper. What about creating the environment for them to sell their produce and craft and they will put their flush toilet when they feel that they are in a position to sustain it

Parry, I would ask the Prime Minister, does he have costings which would indicate as to how many brand new toilets that would be constructed with $150,000? The Prime Minister has been talking of the eradication of pit latrines for months. Parry should also tell him that he isn’t aware of a comprehensive plan for such a venture. Just jumping money here and there and saying it is for the eradication of pit latrine appears to be cynical.

Never mind pit latrines in Atkinson. Can we have public toilet facilities in Roseau please. I’m fed up encountering views of people pee-peeing against buildings and exposing their dingelings, squatting in a gutter in broad daylight or slopping out from back-of yard. Roseau itself smells like a pit latrine. At least in the country site they have organic decomposition.

  25. Truth
    March 25, 2014

Mr. P M it is not always feasible to replace a pit latrine with a flushing toilet with the kind of slopes we have in most of the villages , are you aware of the fact that soakaways are necessary to erect flushing toilets since there are no sewage system in the rural areas.Let us be practical someone who has established there little 2 by 4 with a few wooden pillars hardly any room for an outdoor kitchen where on earth is that soakaway is going to be erected? is it in the neighbour’s yard or under the house. Please P M stop fooling the rural folks. The people who need flush toilets have them already, this was part of the plan when they were building with the approval of environmental health. It is a mockery to the people of Atkinson and the other villages. This is a potential health hazard. Before you speak consult environmental health department.

after 14 years in Government i just find it strange that labour brings to the table things that can’t empower the economy of dominica…

if the folks in the territory really sit down and understand issues they would only see the games tricks and the covering of their eyes by this regime……

why didn’t labour put in place projects that could generate income growth for the territory whereby empowering their minds…..another low level approach by a clueless labour regime…

According to the prime minister, it is through his government that the Princess Magaret Hospital received an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). “I never knew that we never had one before 2005, and the doctors and nurses are saying to me, if we had this Intensive Care Unit before 2005, we assure you that we would have saved many lives in Dominica,” Skerrit said.

But my PM, when you making these erratic statements you don’t realize you hurting our party? My pm, in 2005 our DLP was already in power longer than the UWP you know, and you were part of our party during those years. So you have to take your fair share of blame for not saving many lives. Furthermore my PM, when you go down to 20 yrs ago, you directly hitting at the DFP, of which you were part of and it’s because of us UWP was not re-elected you know my PM. So my PM, if you just not thinking let me help you here. When you subtract the 4.5 yrs of UWP from 20 yrs from 2005, you are left with 10 yrs of Freedom and 5.5 yrs of your DLP. So you MUST take the majority of the blame for many lives that were not saved. My PM, Think before you speak because you killing us man.

  31. Labor Power!!!
    March 25, 2014

But my PM I have two questions for you know:

    1. What will they …. when they have nothing to eat? So my PM, if you are serious and really want to give them flushing toilet, $150,000.00 is not even enough to feed them them let alone to eradicate pit latrine you know my PM.

    2. My PM, even if you give them flushing toilet without making provision to pay water bill, provide toilet paper, and timely repair work you not seeing is now we will be left with a mess? You expect them to wipe their boom with stones or lapo- cocoa? When Red ants start to bite them what you will say?

3.But my PM, a year ago you gave the chaiman of the Penville Village council $100K to build a basketball court and today you only want to give Atkinson $150 K to eradicate pit toilet? That cannot build more than 4 toilets you know my PM according to Reggie Austrie’s maths. My PM, people already laughing at us and is now you want them to laugh at us more boy?
