PM Skerrit hails British counterpart as “God sent” for Caribbean

Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has hailed as “God Sent”, the more than EC$1-billion Caribbean Development Fund announced by British Prime Minister Dave Cameron earlier this week.

Mr. Skerrit said “God did not come, but He sent Dave Cameron” to aid Caribbean countries, grappling with sluggish economies and, in the case of Dominica, the ravages of natural disasters.

“The timing of this gesture by the UK Government could not have been more opportune. While we were not daunted by the task ahead, the reality is that these countries needed a Generous Cousin, if not a Big Brother, to step in and assist. This Development Fund announced by Prime Minister Cameron is the lifeline that several countries in the region were quietly hoping for,” Skerrit said in an official statement today.

The British government is to invest £300 million in vital new infrastructure in the Caribbean such as roads, bridges and ports to help drive economic growth and development across the region.

Prime Minister Cameron announced the new fund on Tuesday in Jamaica on the first leg of a two-day visit focused on reinvigorating the relationship between the UK and the Caribbean countries. It will make the UK one of the largest bilateral donors to the region.

Delivered in collaboration with the Caribbean Development Bank, the infrastructure fund will use money from the UK’s existing aid budget, to provide grants over the next few years for a range of projects that will help boost growth and trade across the region, creating jobs and opening up new market opportunities for British businesses.

The Infrastructure Fund will be available to eight Commonwealth countries in the region eligible for UK Official Development Assistance: Jamaica, Guyana, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda and St Vincent & the Grenadines; as well as Montserrat as an ODA-eligible Overseas Territory.

The initiative will help to fund upgrades to ports, new roads and new bridges – making it easier for businesses in the region to trade with one another and with the rest of the world. It will also benefit British businesses, who have the knowledge and expertise to deliver the infrastructure improvements needed.

Dominica is fighting to rebound from the ravages of Tropical Storm Erika, which dumped more than 12 inches of rain on the island; swelling rivers, triggering landslides and occasioning flooding in low lying areas. More than 30 persons died, hundreds are homeless and the country’s infrastructure and other physical development has been set back by over 20 years.

Just last Monday, the World bank issued a report on the effects of Tropical Storm Erika on Dominica, setting at just under US$350 million, the monies that will be required to return a semblance of normalcy to the island.

Prime Minister Skerrit has been in the vanguard of an international storm relief effort, and only last Tuesday evening, in an address to the nation, said the country’s vital agricultural sector had effectively been wiped out, with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of farm lands and equipment having to be rebuilt and replaced.

“It is against this backdrop that we welcome the announcement by Prime Minister Cameron. This is not exclusively for Dominica, but we are delighted that we can benefit. We are happy for other beneficiary countries, because developmental challenges have been besetting small and large states alike, particularly since the global economic meltdown of 2007,” he said. “I look forward very much to meeting with officials of the British government and garnering details of the operation of the Fund. But, the very fact that it has been established, in the first place, is very good news for the Caribbean.”

I see this as a down payment towards reparations. Thanks for the offer. Reparations worked for the Maw Maw they so devastated in their reign of terror and horror.

I hear, one of their main reasons for the Jamaica visit is to finance a prison to put the multitude of violet jailed Jamaicans and future deportees causing havoc in England. Then a few extra dollars to help with the havoc these criminals WILL impose on Jamaican society when they are released. However, I still
cannot see why a person is given an opportunity to better their lives, to earn a living in another man’s land and goes mad into living an idiotic life of crime, most times against their own people. It’s a shame!

I wonder if Peter Augustine would be kind enough to tell me if it is God once again trying to get the attention of the people of South Carolina: And if he believes the Cargo ship that was caught in the hurricane, heading to Puerto Rico, with thirty people aboard which went down, lost at sea!

“Hundreds were rescued from fast-moving floodwaters Sunday in South Carolina as days of driving rain hit a dangerous crescendo that buckled buildings and roads, closed a major East Coast interstate route and threatened the drinking water supply for the capital city.

The powerful rainstorm dumped more than a foot of rain overnight on Columbia, swamping hundreds of businesses and homes. Emergency workers waded into waist-deep water to help people trapped in cars, dozens of boats fanned out to rescue people in flooded neighborhoods and some were plucked from rooftops by helicopters.

Please Francisco, Skerrit did not get a billion dollars to do anything this amount is to used in the Caribbean countries as reparation for the evils that England did to the Caribbean people during slavery,so for you to think so is wrong. Skerrit thinks so too, I guess he is already thinking how much he and his guys may get for themselves but it won’t happen you see all the leaders in the Caribbean are on the same scene of self, that is the reason they will not get anything, just promises the Brits are not foolish that is why they gave us all independence they knew nothing in the Caribbean would not last. Let us give
them independence they said they will fight among themselves it won’t work . Billion dollars my foot who is going to distribute it ?

Okay, I got it, after reading you I went back and read it; I better understand it, I was under the impression that the billion dollars was all going to Dominica, that is why I stated in one submission, the British had better get their overseers in Dominica to supervise the spending!

Skerrit’s comments abut God did not come, should cause some concern to Dominicans, It appear to me that Skerrit, is anti-God, it seems the man does not believe in God, what comes out of the mouth defile the body; yet he is the kind of man some so called rubbish preaching preacher said God gave Skerrit to Dominica. I doubt that’s the best God has to offer!

Embattled Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has closed eight ministries and reshuffled her cabinet in an effort to cut costs and shore up support.
Ministers will have their pay cut by 10% to further reduce spending.
Brazil is facing its worst economic crisis for decades, leaving Ms Rousseff’s popularity at a record low.
Lennox Linton suggested that the PM reduce his cabinet from 18 to 12 and get rid of all the hangers-on in order to save money. Yet I hear nothing about Lennox’s suggestion reported in the press. Wicked people us DUMB ini CANS. By the way this report is from the BBC news.

I don’t understand how God send Cameron to save Dominica, So the Devil must have send him to Jamaica to build a prison with 1500 beds and when it is complete, he will send 500 – 600 Criminals to Jamaica to complete their prison sentences. and when they are done, then they will be set free on the streets of Jamaica, doing what again? As Cameron says the British tax payers should not be on the hook to pay for keeping these criminals in British Prisons. I once heard a wise man stated that anything a beggar gets is “God Sent”. Amen

PM please ensure the money received is spent properly. Liaise with the people of DA to see what their needs are. We needs jobs for the young people, education for the young people so they don’t have to go abroad looking for better opportunity. Health care for everyone. Sound bridges and roads, international airport and the list goes on. Look at other developing countries who is doing well and model DA on them. Please, please PM spend the money wisely and do not line the politicians pockets and allow the people who put you where you are today suffer. Enough said!!!

Just like the Japanese, the Jews, Germans, Reparations is THE reason they are standing tall today.
We are disappointed he was advised to make no mention of Reparations, but only offered a token. It’s like a person owing you a thousand dollars and start paying you in pennies or haypenies. I am amazed by Prime Minister Skerrit’s comments in relation to British Prime Minister Cameron’s announcement of an injection of 300,000,000 million British Pound Sterling Caribbean Development Fund to be administered by the United Kingdom Overseas Development Assistance. It sounded so childish! I mean how can you make such a blasphemous statement. We have to be thankful that God shielded us, we only got rain. I wonder what would have happened had we felt the full brunt of the storm – RAIN, WIND, ROUGH SEAS.

The Fund is to benefit all the former British colonies as follows: (A) Caribbean -1 Bahamas, 2 Jamaica, 3 St Kitts and Nevis, 4 Antigua and Barbuda, 5 Dominica, 6 St Lucia, 7 St Vincent and Grenadines, 8 Barbados, 9 Grenada, 10 Trinidad and Tobago, (B) Central America -11 Belize, and (C)South America -12 Guyana. Also (13) Montserrat.

There is NO SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT FOR DOMINICA. All the countries have needs. To benefit we must submit proposals to get assistance from…

Mr. Skerrit said “God did not come, but He sent Dave Cameron” to aid Caribbean countries—News Article

Prime Minister Sir. I know what you are saying above but there is an error as you say: “God did not come”.

When any work of Love is in action, it is always God doing that work, through His chosen medium, because of His Spiritual Nature.

Without flesh and bones, according to Jesus Himself–God needs a physical medium to do His work. Jesus was the Primary Medium, as the Son in flesh and bones and still is today, by the Power of Holy Spirit.

I disagree with Dominicans calling you “Jesus” if they are referring to the “Christ”, but I am sure that God is working through you, for the sake of Dominica and her people–what you need to do is to continue with your principles of the Spirit— humility and obedience.

Thinking like Jesus, just before His death: “Not My Will but Yours be done”; He glorified the Father through such humility–you can do the same.

You seem, from my point of view to be a very troubled person. If this is how you behave online then I wonder what you are like in real life. For someone who consistently bring up education, you behave extremely uneducated. Your actions continuously embarrass Dominica and Dominicans. So if you really love Dominica like you claim, maybe you should refrain from posting comments for the world to see. Those are just my views.

Because you do not understand that God does His work of Love through people–because He is Spirit. This means that God is always present–whether through His Love or Holiness for the sake of Life in His chosen people.

Why should the saying of Mr. Skerrit–that God send Mr, Cameron with a gift in need, has to do with worshiping Haile Salassie?

What are you talking about. The US and Britain have been helping the region every year all along. Our society is bent too much on dependence and just because China started pumping money we runn to the new feed lot. Where do you think 90% of the tourist that fill our hotels come from. Where do you think 90% of what we produce in the islands go to. These are the things that create jobs. The US and Britain are involved in sustainable development not money to government to prop up themselves, their party, and to stay in power. The Caribbean is just an extension of Africa. Same crap. Ever heard of blood diamonds? Well its not about getting money or having resources but how it is utilized and managed for growth. We as a people are not good at it. If Corbyn was PM of England i wonder how this visit would have played out?
I noticed that Cameron visited Grenada and met PM Keith Mitchell. WOW!!!
He toured a nutmeg processing plant and a bridge
If my PM had good relationship with Cameron like he does with de King of Morocco perhaps he would have stopped in Dominica too.
I stand corrected but i don’t recall we got anything from de King of Morocco.
‘Travelling on to Grenada on Wednesday, Cameron and the Grenadian Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell saw the long term after-effects of natural disasters when they visited the small town of Gouyave. They visited the sole remaining nutmeg processing plant after Hurricane Ivan hit the country in 2004 and viewed a bridge which had also been severely damaged by the hurricane and subsequent tropical storms. The bridge is already earmarked for DFID/World Bank support but it demonstrates the kind of project that could benefit from.

If you are from the true Linton Klan to which I belong, since my grandmother, my father’s mother Cecil Linton, the aunt of the late Meshach Linton, I am disappointed in that comment, because Zionist is irrelevant to the debate in question.

You see; Zionism is an international movement organized for the establishment of a Jewish national, or religious community in Palestine, and later for the support of modern Israel: hence; adj or n we get Zionistic, okay, and the term dates back to the year 1896.

I do not see what that comment has to do with the British donating just about the total amount of money Skerrit said he need to repair the infrastructure. we all should be grateful for that contribution, and be careful not to bite the hand that feeds us!

Guy, I do not want anything out of Dominica!

God has given the education, and knowledge to make a very successful living out of Dominica, I contributed to Dominica threw support of my parent, and other relatives until the day they die; the only thing I ever ask a politician for in Dominica was for one of the free house for my older sister: Skerrit told me he would help her with one more than ten years ago, to this day he is going in his twentieth year of lying, she cannot get that house yet!

I am not one of those people who because they live in America, Canada, England and elsewhere who runs to Dominica want to play politics to survive. Many of them could not use their brain, and mind to survive in Europe, and North America, so they go home and kiss the butt, of who is in power in order to survive.

If Francisco Telemaque ever return to Dominica, I have enough to live on to the day I die, leaving the rest behind to my children. Some of them only smart in Dominica, can’t use…

      • October 4, 2015

Free houses are for those who cannot afford to build one; why would you ask for “free house” for your sister when can build one for her–do you think it would be fair to the poor people?

But then again, all that high talk of yourself is pure futility, produced from your mind of lies and cheating plus other bad things–if only Dominicans would know how much–good grief!

Also! If you want nothing from Dominica why don’t you stop writing all of your things of negativity and darkness against her, which is discouraging the younger people who do not yet know better?

And, PM Skerrit said “God didn’t come”–not rightly stated–but he continued:: “He sent David Cameron” That is the way to give the glory to God, for doing His work through David Cameron–what is the nonsense about: “He does not believe in God?”

A man who doesn’t believe in God, doesn’t have the mentality of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit; like it or not God appointed him to lead Dominica

And then you will have young people coming into your office to beg for a dollar instead of showing them how to make one..I don’t understand how Dominican are so blinded by all your wrong doing.stop giving a dollar ,teach them how to make a dollar.when you cannot give them they will go thief from the people who learned to make it on there own. .enough is enough with that kind of governing in dominica.

That is a very nasty word, don’t refer to Skerrit as a niger, or”negga” as you quoted. I give the man hell everyday, I even called him a mountain chicken, crapo; nevertheless, I detest you term him a niger! That is too low, and I do think he deserve that.

Someone called me a niger in El Paso Texas years ago while in a restaurant, for no other reason than a white person served me before him a white man, white people became so angry at the “white man” they called the police to get him out of the restaurant.

We all play politics, but we need to have a limit to how dirty, and low down we wish to go! in spite of his wicked and lying ways, try not to denigrate or reduce him to below the level of a human! It is not comforting to be called the N word!

In any event all of us Dominicans should be damn happy that our country is a recipient of that money the British has donated, regardless of what Cameron may have said or not said in Jamaica. Now if Skerrit believes that God…

. Now if Skerrit believes that God arrange the gift, he has a right to his opinion, how do we know he did not pray to God for some help, and his prayers are answered!

He might be a vicious vindictive politician, but one thing you need to remember, god allow it to rain it rains for the benefit of the rich and the poor also, it also for the god people and the evil also okay! Dominica as all the rest of the Caribbean were colonies of Britain, how do you know that God has not acted based on the fact that the British plundered our country for more than four hundred years, by all means owed us that billion dollars!

I will thank the British, not on Skerrit’s behalf but for the sake of our broke suffering nation!

“He might be a vicious vindictive politician, but one thing you need to remember, god allow it to rain it rains for the benefit of the rich and the poor also, it also for the god people and the evil also okay”–Telemaque

Read yourself above and see how stupidly contradicting you are–or maybe you are simply trying to get the attention you are craving for, but you don’t know how–and it is too late already.

You have been all over the world’s news media, searching for reasons to prove that God had nothing to do with TSErika in Dominica –O this happened here, that happened there–blah, blah, blah; so what, how, and why would God–all because you do not agree with someone else’ suggestion–that the Storm was part of God’s plan–for whatever His reasons.

Now you come with–how and why God sends rain! How is that different from what those whom you do not agree with, are saying? Man you belong with yourself alone! There are no copies of you! Ayelasssssss!

I can’t wait to see the ways the British can help us return to normalcy. The British are a kind people – always ready to help when in need.

Again a great opportunity the start the economic engine in Dominica if invested wisely. TS has given us the opportunity to start fresh. Creating local jobs and trading local and regional will get us going. If these funds are used to fraudulently finance social programs then we screwed. The government must also find a way to levy taxes on online purchasing since this has become another broken vein that bleeds money out of the country and region. Reduce VAT on merchants tripple taxes on internet purchases. Use bureau of standards and financial audits to ensure retailers reduce prices accordingly. In nature destruction is an opportunity for new growth and new beginning. My only fear is some people may stick to the old ways.

    All very nice.

However, PM Skerritt, try not to sound so desperate and eager. After all, this is what I consider part of our ‘reparations’.

England ‘raped’ our resources for hundreds of years, it’s the least they could do.

Yes I said it! Now bring on the thumbs down and the chatty-chat. I don’t care.
