PM Skerrit hints at 400 new jobs

Skerrit at the function on Thursday evening

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has hinted that the unemployment sector will soon benefit from an initiative geared at creating over 400 employment opportunities across Dominica.

He made the disclosure at an award ceremony at the St. Matthew’s Hall in St. Joseph on Thursday evening.

“I will come back at another opportunity to speak about some initiatives that the government is about to implement towards assisting with the unemployment situation confronting our young people,” Skerrit said. “And we have a program to roll out over the next couple weeks … we will be targeting the unemployment of over 4oo people across Dominica.”

At the function Skerrit donated a $40,000 cheque to the St. Joseph village council for its Small Business Support Program.

He said previously the government had contributed $200,000 to the program but it was insufficient to those who applied for assistance.

“The $200,000 we gave the first time was not sufficient to support all who had applied,” he stated. “And I felt that we need to support all who applied for the assistance and I was told you needed an extra $40,000 to complete that arrangement.”

According to the prime minister it was a “promise made, a promise kept.”

“And whenever we say we will do something, we will do it by the grace and help of God,” he pointed out. “And I am happy that I have been provided with the resources required to hand over this cheque to the Chairman of the village council, towards the completion of the Small Business Support Program in St. Joseph.”

We welcome the jobs but you all are only looking for the labourites. when someone is going for a job the comment is “he/she is not one of us” (ask the parl. rep. from wesley she is good at that) and is only your supporters getting the jobs. the government serve the people so bring the jobs for those who are qualified not just labourites.

Goodness gracious, every time you hear dem fellas talk about jobs is when you hear more people losing the jobs. Prime Minister stop making those promises in attempting to fool the people. If you have jobs JUST DO IT like NIKE instead of these empty promises.

Sometime ago whilst you were away you ask Austrie to announce for you that you were coming home with 300 brand new jobs in your brief case and he did. As soon as you got here and open your brief some 246 fled from the Clear Harbour Area (Monell Williams almost lost her job in the process). In Point Mitchel you said that by Sept 30 you will announce another 500 new jobs but instead we learn of retrenchment at LIME and allegedly FCIB. Now you are in St. Joe telling more of this. My friend stop it now too much deception man, we have lost all faith in you and your ability to take us forward. In the past 9+ years you have only taken Roosevelt Medad Skerrit and a selected few forward and we shall have no more of this behaviour in our office!

We are so fed up of your trickery and lies, your secret and technical victimization that we really do not care what you do anymore and we are not afraid. Joining hearts, hands and voices in denying you another term to further plunge our beloved country into poverty and crisis (leadership, presidential, treasury looting, lies, deception villas, land deals, bobol and that list goes on). You know you lose already so we thank Monel Williams for this $40,000 cheque, Joshua Francis for the new school and playing field and the entire UWP team for your LPO and spending spree.

Mr PM if you going to roll out 500 jobs shouldn’t you be talking to the nation and not promising to come and tell St Joseph. SMFH. This dude need some help. Not even the America government can come to it’s people and say I am going to roll out 500 jobs. Government don’t do that. Job creation is systematic and not automatic. Systems , facilities, operations are put in place to create jobs. Giving money to a few party supporters here and there is corruption not job creation.

The bible story says that a snap of a finger Jesus turn water into wine and one loaf of bread into baskets of bread well let us see Skerrit the messiah create 500 jobs I a jiffy. Mathew Walter’s prediction that Skerrit is Jesus may just be prophetic. So all along the Jesus of Bethlehem was just a hoax is actually Jesus of vielle Case. Behold the Vielle Case Messiah

By the way jesus of Vielle Casewe we are still waiting for the 100 day plan to come through; the boat for the farmers; unemployment check for the unemployed; Please Jesus of Vielle Case ask LIAT to deliver the lost suit cases containing the end of September jobs or unless Jesus of Vielle Case decided to bring those jobs when he delivering the farmers boat.

In the name of the father , Skerrit and the holy Spirit Amen.

Oh my god how can Dominicans sit and allow smokey the bandit to do what he wants with tax payers money. If that is what we call progress ebeh 1930 here we come.
This is exactly the kind of government corruption that that creates poverty and division. This is what Chavez did why today Venezuela ( with it’s magnificent riches) has so much poverty. Chavez was able to buy loyalty just the same way – While doing so the people became poorer and poorer.

This is heart breaking and the sad thing is people who know better are condoning such behavior. The director of audit who is suppose to be representing our interest cannot speak; the ministers in cabinet are only there to collect a pay check while Skerrit is on the rampage. The religious leaders burry their heads in the sand while their right hand is up collecting the rain drops.
I have never seen such recklessness in Dominica. These are the same people who told us that the UWP was very corrupt. Well this Roosevelt Party took corruption to the next level and the people went down into the valley of poverty and dependency. Those who are able to speak choose to drink the wine of betrayal get drunk and conveniently remain asleep.

Crying crying crying – those who believe in prayer please pray for Dominica.

Believe it or not I Mamizoo is not a supporter of any political party. Mamizoo is all about Dominica. So when I read this statement by Skerrit to the St Joseph people I want to vomit. While one faction of government is in another area talking about small business development agency ( like NDFD does not exist) Skerrit the government is running his own promotion show viki vy.
How many rum kabawais ( rum shop) develop into viable businesses that employ people? Well I am not only saying that the vote buying money is for rum kabawais but that the country is being managed by one man with a rum kabawais business owner mentality. ” let me $200 in some pweve … ahhhh not enough let me put some water in the pweve them gwogere wouldn’t even notice. Next week let me put add $40 to some zayeed rum”No structure, no managerial skills, acting on impulse. Even if there is a business plan he has no regards for the plan; if there are laws and regulation regarding expenditures etc he has no regard. The rum shop owner is lord and king – it’s all about I do this, I find this.
We wonder why Dominica is in such a bad bad condition. $200 was ” donated” to the St Joseph council for small businesses and how much came out of that. Who is monitoring the progress.

Where does central government “donate ” funding for small business development. Government put systems in place that would stimulate small business development. Where in the world one man does around as “thee government” donating checks willy Nilly and claiming that it is to develop the people.
Tax payers of this country we aught to be enraged by what is going on. Where is this money coming from and why it is that the wanton spending did not appear on the budget presented three months ago.
This is the level of corruption that our system of government allow. One man is able to run the country into the ground like a suicide bomber. No one can stop him. Roosevelt Skerrit is out of control.
Will we ever see a change in this government system ? I doubt cause be it UWP , Freedom, Labour DEMLAB ce le meme.

As we speak, he has his cronies in the US and some Caribbean countries asking people if they want to come home and vote in the election. Don’t be surprised if you see a sudden influx of expats coming back to vote their family members back into poverty for another 5 years. I guess they also like ppl to beg them, and it makes them feel good when they can boast to all their friends about the number of barrels the have to send home.
I believe that he will even hold the election during a time like Christmas or Carnival so it will appear that they are only coming home to visit. Be aware Dominicans, as the saying goes, “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me,” I wonder if we are gonna let ourselves be fooled a 4th time.

In most countries its usually the private sector who are creating jobs and make up a higher percentage of gpa whereas in dominica its the government . Where the hell is the private sector?!!!! In the dominica we cannot keep on counting on the government for everything if we do then we shouldjust become a socialist island . Plus dominicans lazy the unemployed are unemployed because they’re lazy not because it doesn’t have jobs what sense does it make applying for a job when you dont have a degree or you do have one but with a low or boardeline gpa like duhhhhh the upportunities are there take them . In my opinion Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit just making Dominicans even lazy than they already are, there I said it Dominicans are very lazy people.

Trinidominican…..The GOV’T is intentionally dismantling the private sector example Jerry Brisbane company Brizee Mart. If you not doing Skerrit biding as a private business owner they make it very hard for your survival. There is an organized GOVT small business unit to help boost the private sector business but the Prime Minister always undermine them every time he get a chance with his free giving behave with no accountability. Therefore making the GOVT Small Business unit dysfunctional.

Yes you the right this is the breeding ground for socialism with dictatorship and away from democracy.

Every month the number of jobs promised by skerrit changes. 300, 500 now 400. Is this a total of 1200 jobs? WOW. I wonder if all these jobs are from one investor who continues to shift the goal post to someone they view as a desperate PM or is it just his own shear desperation that makes him make these pie in the sky promises. This is a PM whose grip on power and whose self enrichment schemes are slipping from him. He is running all over the places doling out money, LPO’s and making empty promises. So wen should we blame our governement…. bush pushed the us to economic downturn. the people blamed their government and voted the republicans out. In france the same happened.. sarcozy was kicked out. Italy berlosconi kicked outout…in britain the labor part was kicked out andreplaced with a coalition government… all over the world, where governments have failed their people, the people have acted and replaced them at thepolls.why should dominica be any different? we can even look at examples in thecaribbean…. st lucia, grenada, just to name afew have done the rightful thing! ISAY DOMINICA IS NEXT…. CHANGE IS AMUST…….. NOT ANOPTION!!!!!

@ Realized Yes you are a classic Skerrit slave. International Financial Crisis has nothing to do with the poor and miserable state of Dominica. Dominica’s impoverishment is a direct consequence of GREEDY LEADERS, WHO LIE,STEAL AND CHEAT.
Thanks be to God this reign is coming to an end soon. After 13 long years its lies, insults, begging, that has characterized this lazy regime.
        SHAME ON THIS GOVERNMENT.

  67. October 18, 2013

The fundamental jobs creation should start with the Chinese projects that are currently ongoing in Dominica. I am of the view a lot of young unemployed Dominicans should be placed on these jobs as interns. This will assist with our unemployment issues and help these young people will learn the trade in a mentorship setting to become part of the skilled employees that Dominica needs. As a professional I am absolutely disappointed when my country has students graduation in the hundreds, case in point the recent grads from DSC (300 plus) and the rate of job creation seem to be regressing. I would like ask each of our parliamentary representatives how many Chinese are unemployed compared to locals. We need to keep in mind that as Dominicans we will be the ones to repay these loans, yet we cannot even participate in the short term benefit like a salary. I do not care who is in power this is wrong. I understand that we need assistance from foreign governments, but we are too weak at negotiating the terms of reference, yet any descent is seen as unpatriotic. How can we be living in a country that is ours, yet our local MPW Engineers cannot overlook jobs being done by the Chinese to make sure they are building based on Caribbean Building/Construction code. Too many of our people are so afraid to speak; as a professional working out of Dominica, I see many signs where the building materials used by the Chinese are sub-standard, case in point the non-use of coated steel and deformed steel in beams causing them to bleed (rust marks) on the outside of the beams is a sign of material use; this can also mean the cover used might be less than 2 1/2″ – 3″ and thereby causing water to seep through cracks in the beams (look at the Stadium ring beams). When deformed steel is not used it will affect the bonding in Reinforce concrete. Note: At very high temperatures, steel expands more rapidly than concrete and the two materials can separate if the correct deformed steel is not used. This bond strength is proportional to the contact surface of the steel to the concrete, and therefore it is absolutely important that the right deformed steel aka rebars is used. This just one of many areas that needs to be addressed. This comment is in no way seeking to create any problems, but we need to be able to have a say in the quality control of our infrastructure construction.

Change requires longterm struggle. Authority can be challenged and beaten. Social movements can be pivotal forces. Disruptive activism works. Now is the time for Dominicans to stand with Linton to boycott independence celebrations it was Former Supreme Court Justice William Douglas who once said: “Power concedes nothing without a demand.”
