PM Skerrit says economic acceleration ahead

Despite claims that Dominica’s economy is not doing well, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that there are positive signs of ‘economic acceleration in the months ahead.’

Speaking at the launch of the National Employment Program (NEP), the Prime Minister said “notwithstanding the pronouncements of the naysayers, there are clear and positive indicators and projections of economic acceleration in the months ahead.”

According to Skerrit, these projections are “in every sphere of economic activity particularly tourism, agriculture, banking and other services.”

“Prospects for the next 12 to 18 months are very good,” he said.

He noted that several projects are currently being undertaken on the island including hotel construction, geothermal projects, major road works and a new hospital.

Concerning the government’s employment program, the prime minister said it was unfair to have young people waiting for more than a year for employment.

“Was it fair to ask young people who have been waiting for one year and more to wait another 18 months? The answer was clearly no. We decided that we had to bite the bullet and become the catalyst for the embrace and recruitment for the trained young people into the workforce,” he said.

Skerrit added that it is his hope that the beneficiaries of the NEP will take full advantage of the opportunity.

For a fast and furious economic acceleration US$300 Million signed in China on 8th Nov. 2013. Political advisor of Commonwealth of Dominica (or is it DLP)Hartley Henry, chairman of the Agricultural Industrial & Development Bank of Dominica Martin Charles, Prime Minister assistant David Xu, special envoy of Commonwealth of Dominica in China, Robert Woe Yao were in attendance at the signing ceremony. Where were the Senior GOVT. technocrats (PSs, FSs, etc) in the execution of such a quantum deal.. where is the good public governance and the list!!! The Chinese had a provincial (1)Under-Secretary-General,(2)Deputy Director of the Bureau of Commerce, and (3)Chief Accountant of State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission. They also had present(4)Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Office,(5)Deputy Division Chief of Latin America in Division of Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to corporate representatives. Again where were our Senior GOVT. technocrats..

Hey good observation, but it would break the circle of friends with benefits. Additionally, if you want to sound more intelligent you bring people who are not qualified in the field of Econs, Accounting and Engineering.

The only question regarding the management of the economy under the present administration is, ” is it a mater of ignorance or incompetence”. In any case, the minister of finance has got to go. He has failed the party, failed the people, and stifled the economy. He does not seem to understand that it is jobs/ good jobs, that move the economy forward. Projects” have very little value unless they produce Jobs. The minister is a collage grad that somehow failed to absorb the basics of economics 101. Its all about jobs when it comes to this consumer based free enterprise system that underpins our economic structure. The people need work. A major role of modern government is to create incentives and foster the development of jobs. This is basic government 101, a course the finance minister seemed to have skipped while at school. There are many political officials in the OECS and Carricom that have PHD may be Dominica would be better served if the minister went back to school to pursued a PHD and lets someone more knowledgeable in matters of keeping an economy on track take up the position of minister of finance.

The works for this cooperation agreement includes the construction of an international tourism hotel, construction of an international airport and building a new hospital. “I’m sure I’ll take you with pleasure!” the Queen said. “Two pence a week, and jam every other day.”
Alice couldn’t help laughing, as she said, “I don’t want you to hire me – and I don’t care for jam.”
“It’s very good jam,” said the Queen.
“Well, I don’t want any to-day, at any rate.”
“You couldn’t have it if you did want it,” the Queen said. “The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday – but never jam to-day.”
“It must come sometimes to ‘jam to-day’,” Alice objected.
“No, it can’t,” said the Queen. “It’s jam every other day: to-day isn’t any other day, you know.”
“I don’t understand you,” said Alice. “It’s dreadfully confusing!”

Hey, Lewis Carroll, it’s a pleasant surprise to meet you here on DNO. I am a very ardent follower of your narratives of life both down The Rabbit Hole and Through the Looking Glass. The parallels with what currently obtains in the Nature Isle this electoral season are getting “curiouser and curiouser” similar.

With the economic acceleration getting into high gear, maybe jam day will soon come for Alice. The White Queen is such a gem and her questions are so interesting! “Can you do addition?’ the White Queen asked. “What’s one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one and one?” I don’t know.” said Alice, “I lost count.” Me too Lewis Carroll…

40 Million dollar Alba Grant, International Airport, Housing revolution, 500 new jobs, Cabrits Development Plan, Pit latrine revolution, National hotel, Internship program…… I am just like Alice now. “I don’t know. I lost count.”

Mr PM the next 12 to 18 months we will be under IMF austerity measures, so you are clearly delusional by stating within these months there will be ‘economic acceleration.’ Review the recent economic indicators and restate your stance on the subject.

Again Mr. PM you are clueless and ignorant of finance and economic realities of the country that you are leading.

Economic indicators include various indices, earnings reports, and economic summaries. Examples: unemployment rate, quits rate, housing starts, Consumer Price Index (a measure for inflation), Consumer Leverage Ratio, industrial production, bankruptcies, Gross Domestic Product, broadband internet penetration, retail sales, stock market prices, money supply changes.

Unemployment is on a rise, how can you say you have economic success. The agricultural sector is failing, little or no manufacturing, tourism could do better….Mr. PM you have absolutely no grounds for making this announcement.

The projects you are boasting about are merely products of Chinese colonization. How many Dominicans will be employed?

In closing, allow me to ask you some questions Mr. PM.

    1. Are you able to manage this country?

    2. Do you have any future plans for the agricultural sector and manufacturing?

3.Do you have the support of your team and do they trust you?

    4. Do you have confidence in your team?

  26. December 3, 2013

How do these initiatives translate into jobs?
    1. New Hotel, only if we can get tourists to come and stay, not true.
    2. Infrastructure undertakings such as now hospital
major road works is a joke. The hospital will be built by the Chinese aided by a few token DA workers. After its built where are the sustainable jobs? The people building the roads he talking about cannot even get paid for 6 months. Again when the road is complete then what.
3 All the edifices (Windsor Park Stadium)created by the Govt. are made of steel and concrete, you ever try eating that

I quote, ” despite claims that Dominica economy is not doing well, PM Skeritt………………… economic acceleration in the months aheah”. So Mr. PM are you saying that today the economy is slow? Which indicate that you agree with the naysayers.
Mr. PM i see you have now upgraded your financial skills to making economic projections. I am impressed. I must remind you that in the recent past we had a stadium, built, road from portsmouth to roseau, an airport enhanced all projects that should have stimulated our economy. Oh i forget the palace on the other side of fort young, yet your last presentation on the budget this past summer showed negative growth, shrinkage.
Why not tell us what growth we have seen this past quarter. You have failed at advancing Dominicas economy for 13 yrs because you were to busy taking care of your personal economic growth while my people there sucking salt. Why should i believe you going to turn things around in 18 months. Mr. PM you cannot be trusted we are not blind nor dumb and it is our damn business

    December 3, 2013

May be your economy Roosevelt!!!!!. A broken economy cannot produce any new jobs unless its fix!! Are you saying in the next couple of months the economy will be fixed? If so, what are your plans to fix it.
You and your henchmen serve only one purpose now- that is- the perfect example of what a government should not be, should never be, and must not be.

Does that include the loan of $300 million the Chinese gave you on Nov 8th with Hartley Henry present in China? How is Dominica going to pay for that loan Sir and why did you have to take Mr. Hartley Henry with you on that trip? Is he the only Hatchet man of yours you trust? Such disrespect for our people by Skerrit.
