The Roosevelt Skerrit-led administration has been given the green light to construct a respite center in Chance, Portsmouth.
Community Development Minister Gloria Shillingford has confirmed that Basic Needs Trust Fund is contributing $1.3-million towards the construction of a facility for children with disabilities in the town.
She told the Annual General Meeting of the organization on Saturday that Cabinet established the respite center for children with disabilities in Chances in Portsmouth and, “We are proud to say that it will help all of the children in Dominica to have a better life”.
According to her, the center is expected to provide day care services for 30 children living with severe disabilities as well as support services to other children with similar conditions.
“It is hoped that this center will bring about not only an improved quality of life for these children but also a measure of relief to those children and family members,” she said.
Rome obviously was not built in one day, so although previous commentators have lamented that this is happening late in the day, I believe that it is a commendable step and should be encouraged to its completion.
It is also important that efforts are made to train the caretakers so they would be skilled in taking care of the disabled – wehich can be a most challenging task. I applaud the efforts by those who are striving to take the process forward. Well done, small but decent steps in the right direction. Kudos!!!!
To God be the glory, great things He has done! Now let us pray that the education of the populace with regards to children with disability will accompany that and the institution will find itself being worked by sincere, sincere, hearts…These children are have amazing personalities and will need to be looked over by honest caring people.

The Success
Children’s Services are and should be the core in specialising in providing short and long term break to enable care for disabled children and young people (formerly known as respite care).
This will provide valuable relief for families and an opportunity to also provide attention to other members within the family unity.
Within the short break and care provision within the Children’s Services Disability Team should offer the following services:
•Short break care overnight breaks, within a foster carer’s home or the disabled child or young person’s own home
•Short breaks during the day, with care available in the child’s own home and elsewhere eg the home that is being built in Chance
•Short breaks in universal settings are delivered through the support of a befriending, sitting or sessional service
Core Children’s Services is unique in the field of support for Disabled Children and their Families.
The goverment will have to access registration and the Care Quality Commission as this will allow the Children’s Services to provide a broad range of breaks by providing:-
•Support in the Family Home
•Support in the community
•Support in Family Based Settings
It also allows the same said home to have a child to stay and support the family in ensuring that those children with the most complex disabilities and their carer or family will have a short break which can or will be consistent.

Better late than never. This is good news for Portsmouth and Dominica. Development and advancement also means recognizing the less fortunate and creating paths that assist them in living normal lives. Let’s hope that the other villages will soon follow and receive their own respite places for the differently abled and not disabled.

A very good move in the right direction. Somewhat late, but certainly necessary. I strongly believe that such a centre would alleviate some of the problems that these parents go thru every day, doing their best to look after their disabled children. The question now remains; (1) Has the initial work been done in identifying and scrutinising qualified and experienced caretakers? (2) Would families be encouraged to have their child or children taken care of at the said centre? Moreover; at what cost?
this is a very good move on the government part to build a facility to house the less fortunate who are disabled.a big tums up to them but i am hoping that this comes to completion and all moneys will go to that cause and not be pocketed.
