Roseau Valley gets Korean assistance

MP for Roseau Valley Dr. Colin McIntyre (right) shakes hands with Korean representative JI Min Kim at the ceremony

Residents of the Roseau Valley have received assistance to the tune of US$100,000 compliments of the Government of Korea.

The assistance, in the form of agricultural tools and building material, was presented at a ceremony on Tuesday.

Speaking at the event, Ji Min Kim of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Santo Domingo, said his government was happy to facilitate the gesture. “My government is very happy and pleased to do this,” he said. “I understand that Tropical Storm Ophelia caused significant damage to the area, especially the Roseau Valley, and I hope these will contribute to the rehabilitation.”

Kim also gave the assurance that ties between Dominica and Korea will remain strong. “I would like to say it is my sincere wish that the close, friendly and cooperative ties that exist between our two countries will continue to prosper and strenghthen throughout the future,” he noted.

Parliamentary representative for the Roseau Valley, Dr. Collin McIntyre said the contribution from Korea came at an opportune time. “There is no better time than now to receive this gift,” he remarked. “In terms of our agriculture in Dominica and the Roseau Valley, we are making some serious moves right now. We know there are challenges in agriculture and because of our terrain here we depend a lot on our manual tools,” he said. “I am satisfied with what we have here today.”

He told the Korean representative that the name of his country will resound throughout the Roseau Valley. “I must say councillor the name Korea is going to echo in the Roseau Valley in appreciation for what you have done,” he said.

DNO, I cannot get over the below comments of my dear blogger Johnson Carolyn.

I am concerned that while the country continues to plunge deeper and deeper into the abyss of chaos and corruption, a few of us are willing to accept so called (or seen) physical activities like a rehabilitation of a road or a housing project for party loyals etc as “development” at any coat. Some are willing to accept the corruption and plundering of the country’s resources in lieu of the resurfacing of a road here and there by Chinese and the construction of a Palace or whatever the DLP considers to be “development”.

ROSEAU VALLEY is unhappy about the status quo in the valley. Dr. Mac time has come, peaked and he has to go.

However, one of the highest hurdles that we have in the Valley today is the unwillingness of qualified (quality) individuals to be a candidate. To date, neither the Freedom Party nor the UWP has a solid prospective candidate if a snap election were to be called and this is extremely troubling.

Whereas the DLP Parl Rep is a weak, corrupt duck, this makes Collin laughs in his sleep.
He will have the deep pockets to finance his election campaign to buy votes, he will get foreign assistance from the Chinese, Koreans, Moroccans, and Venezuelans. Therefore, we must start putting things in place early. It is worrying that we do not have a care-taker nor a strong prospective candidate in the Valley. Whereas one could say in theory that the Roseau valley seat should be in the pocket of the opposition, a victory is not guaranteed. I would rather reelect the present Parl Rep rather than supporting the election of another crook or someone of low integrity and morals.

Our policy must be to bring in new blood and promote youth in our politics. (I am too old for that now!). Remember the freedom party was ushered into government in the 1980s on the back of the powerful Ossie Walsh and Johnson Boston Young Freedom Movement (YFM). Therefore we must get the youth onboard.

But times have changed, so we need to adopt the Obama style, with extensive use of social media, blogs and electronic dissemination of info.. The opposition need to have its army of young people on the internet, on face book, DNO, The Dominica, net, and all websites where they could spread their message. The traditional methods will not work, especially with the deep corrupt pockets of the government.

    Respectfully

My family has been strong supporters of Dr. Mac but am really getting concerned about the lack of morals of both the parl.rep and other members of the DLP. i like Dr. Mac personally but if it means voting for him will give more power to Skerrit and Tony —I would have a big problem doing that

The thing is my family will definitely benefit from the gifts but that is only because we are supporters.. i am not sure all the farmers- especially those who are known supporters of the opposition will get any.

    December 20, 2012

I had no intention to digress from the central theme of the story but having read the comments below from my fellow constituents, I felt obliged to explore a hidden theme.

Clearly the people of the ROSEAU VALLEY are fed up not just with Skerrit and DLP government but specifically with their Parl. Rep. and they have good reason to be.

Some people may accuse me of being an UWPite but the truth is I am simply anti-corruption and violation of our laws. For that reason I was very supportive in the 80’s of Waddy and Tony Astaphan, when they were calling for accountability and transparency in government. I remember speaking to Tony’s dad on the question of the Parliamentary Commission and why we have not had one since our independence. Mr. Astaphan was passionate about accountability in government then. He was also very much concerned at the time that the Freedom Party had given a monopoly to DEXIA for the importation of rice, flour and sugar. We spoke about these issues.

Today, it hurts so much to witness the person who was so concerned about good and accountable government spinning the truth and defending corruption, the kind of corruption that our Parl. Rep has not been able to stand against perhaps because of his own involvement.

So, although I live in the valley among the people, it is some times hard to judge their mood.

And that is why ROSEAU VALLEY urges our youth to get involved in the politics of the Valley. That is why ROSEAU VALLEY urges the family and friends of an intelligent and progressive young professional like Mr. RONALD CHARLES to take the leap of faith into the political arena. I invite Dr. Peter K. B. St. Jean to lend his support to this young man and ROSEAU VALLEY in encouraging the young lawyer RONALD CHARLES to contest the ROSEAU VALLEY seat in the next general elections. Now is the right season. The time is right. The stars are aligned and shining a bright light for his success as the next Parl. Rep of the ROSEAU VALLEY

Please Mag, Clem, Roy, Elvis, Lilly Valley posies, Henry George, Joan, Morancie, encourage o Ronald and give him the support in coming forward to serve the people of the Valley.

Ronald already has skills, commitment, discipline, temperament, qualifications, and experience in community development. He was born and raised in Trafalgar. There is no question about his allegiance and commitment to the development of the people of the Valley. Ronald does not need to buy votes to win. He does not need to prey on the ignorance, innocence and poverty of our beautiful young women to win an election. He is from among us. He is a poor, humble young man who has worked hard to educate himself.

ROSEAU VALLEY is pleased to endorse the nomination of MR. RONALD CHARLES as the next Parliamentary Representative of the ROSEAU VALLEY if he decided to contest the elections on the ticket of a united opposition to get rid of this wicked and corrupt DLP administration. It is time that another Charles bring back respectability and integrity in the representation of the people of the valley

Vote RONALD CHARLES for THE ROSEAU VALLEY

    Respectfully

Interesting to note Bing’s comment on promoting himself as the next UWP candidate for the Roseau Valley. Bing must be reminded of his previous past as a seeker of assistance under false pretense.

This is the first time in the history of the Roseau Valley where we’ve been given serious representation in terms of our development. Both from a people’s point of view (housing & education) and its infrastructure (roads, geothermal development to name a few, employment opportunities associated with geothermal), how can sensible constituents of the Roseau Valley ever endorse such an article. This certainly is a young man testing the waters, pretending to be someone else, but really the author of the previous absurd article is Mr. Ronald Charles himself, better known as BING.

Bing should take note of whats going on presently in the Roseau Valley and really ask himself whether he’s making sense. The Roseau Valley is certainly on the map and the pal rep is busy trying to make the lives of his people substantially better. Over this christmas season, as a resident of the Roseau Valley, I received a hamper yesterday with a card from my pal rep; I was personally touched.

Really BING, what do you have to offer the people of the Roseau Valley? False promises, which our youth won’t listen to, just aren’t accepted with open arms anymore. WE LIKE PROGRESS! Educational opportunities are now available to the youth of the Roseau Valley thanks to the Dominica Labour Party & particular our Pal Rep. Ask the mothers of the parents of kids that have been sent off to study overseas whether the article before made sense.

The Pal Rep a few days ago was seen receiving housing assistance from the Korean government for the people of the Roseau Valley. I must say, I commend the pal rep for such a gesture and for also providing assistance (farming tools) for small farmers in the Roseau Valley.

As the holiday approaches, the children christmas parties are about to start. Kids can go home with a TOY IN THEIR HAND thanks to the pal rep.

Does Bing really have a plan? What is this plan? Or, is he just hiding behind the name “Roseau Valley”. People in the Roseau Valley are not interested in empty promises; they’re interested in the Dominica Labour Party for the education of their children; for the housing of their people; for infrastructure and road development; for geothermal development. Also don’t forget that along with the geothermal project comes JOBS! More people can go home with money to buy food for their families.

Our interest in the Roseau Valley is to stick with the Dominica Labour Party, which has a vision and a plan.

We won’t go back to the days without change. We’ve seen the road to progress and WE LOVE IT!

What is so interesting? The truth is you know nothing about what write. Ronald “Bing” Charles is not promoting himself as the next UWP candidate for the Roseau Valley. Bing is completely innocent and here you are already attacking him, lying and spewing untruths.
Bing has absolutely nothing to do with what ROSEAU VALLEY has written. In fact, I am not sure that Bing knows who is the person or group of persons who writ under the name ROSEAU VALLEY. I have analyzed our constituency and recognized a talented Youngman who could do a lot to uplift the Roseau Valley. I hold steadfast to my view that Ronald Charles would be a very good candidate for any political party in the Valley.
At this juncture, I will not address the rhetorical questions that you have posed below and your early but unsuccessful attempt to destroy a promising young man. Are you suggesting that anyone who contests the Roseau valley seat must be an angel with no sins? (Guess like Mac and Skerit!!).

Listen, apart from the surname and the PHD, Collin does not have much. The man cannot even speak properly for a qualified doctor. He has ignored and neglected the people since his victory, used the young women of the Valley for his own pleasure and as a Minister of government he has been one of the most corrupt among the band of thieves.

At this point in our political history, if you genuinely feel that this is the first time in the history of the Roseau Valley that we have been given serious representation in terms of our development, you are terribly mistaken. What is the cost of that development that you speak of when we have one of the most corrupt Parl Rep in history?

The vibes on the ground suggests that the political climate has changed and the winds have been blown out of Dr. Mac’s sails. There is a fresh breeze of hope that can fuel a victory of a united opposition due to the self destructive actions of the DLP. I am however, concerned that we are not quite ready in the Valley if a snap election is called and that worries me, hence my call to a young man like Ronald Bing Charles to come forward as a son of the soil to do the right, be firm and fair.

        Respectfully

I am actually surprised that not a single comment has been posted on this story so far. I thought I would have allowed others to comment without my usual diatribe.

Of course, it would be unprofessional and a betrayal of my high standard of objectivity if I did not comment on this positive development in the Roseau Valley.

It is generally easier to criticize but one has to be professional at all times, thankful at times, learn to give due praise and offer congratulations when it is deserved.

Definitely, our Parl Rep has disappointed us in the Valley and in fact he has neglected some communities in the Valley but on this occasion, we must express gratitude to both the Embassy of the Republic of (South) Korea (note not the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and our Parl Rep. Without a doubt, the people of the Roseau Valley are thankful for this Christmas gift.

    Thankfully and respectfully

  16. ROSEAU VALLEY
    December 20, 2012

Indeed, there is no doubt that these tools will contribute enormously to the improvement of our agricultural productivity in the Valley and by extension Dominica.

Considering that the majority of small farmers in the Roseau valley are in Morne Prosper, Laudat, Wotten Waven and Cochrane, we expect more of the tools to be distributed in these communities rather than in Trafalgar and Fond Canie, the political base of the Parl Rep. After all, the gift was given for the benefit of the ”Residents” /People of the Roseau Valley and not the Parl Rep, who has merely received it on our behalf.

We certainly understand that the Parl Rep is on a moral, reputation rehabilitation effort in preparation for the next general elections and he will do everything to erase the memories of his central role in certain corrupt activities in the Skerrit administration such as the garbage bin and fertilizer bowbol.

But let’s not kid ourselves that tropical storm Ophelia has been the main cause of damage to the Valley in recent times. I dear say that the active participation of our Parl Rep in every corrupt activity of the DLP administration has done worse. This has been a significant moral disaster and political embarrassment for the people of the Valley.

It is hoped that as election comes around our Par. Rep will invoke the moral and political courage to admit that he has failed the people he represents in parliament. Hopefully that would aid his rehabilitation effort and help rebuild his public image as an honest, hard working and trustworthy politician. If he can do this, he could still be victorious in the Valley, especially as the opposition parties appear to be in disarray in the Valley without a care-taker or solid prospective candidates if an election were to be held anytime soon.

Apart from the un-ministerial language used, one is unsure of what the Parl Rep means by saying that “in terms of our agriculture in Dominica and the Roseau Valley, we are making some serious moves right now”, when every feeder road needs maintenance, farmers are running away from agriculture, there is no efficient transportation for our produce to market and the budget for agricultural development in Dominica is less than many other less important sectors of the Dominican economy.

Whereas the Ambassador is guaranteed that such gesture will at least help maintain, if not improve, the friendly and cooperative ties that exist between Dominica and South Korea, I would dear say our Parl. Rep may have stretched the extent of the gratitude of the people in saying “Korea is going to echo in the Roseau Valley in appreciation for a donation of some small manual agricultural tools in the 21st century, when the village councils and sports committees do not have grass cutter at their disposal to clean our playfields etc.

Anyway, whatever one may say, let’s give our Parl Rep some credit and praise for negotiating this assistance and express gratitude to the government and people of South Korea.

    Respectfully

Let UWP apologize first considering they are asking us to vote for them over Labour in the same election Colin asking us to. So if Colin must apologize and admit failing the people and dont get me wrong I totally agree that he should but then so too must the UWP candidate who reigned between 1995-2000.

If he/she no longer is running he/she must still apologize and ask that his/her trangressions not splatter all over the new candidate. So now we have 2 candidates swearing never to get involved again in any nefarious activities and to remain honourable in the truest sense of the word.
