Salisbury reunion a success

Immediate past chairman of the Salisbury Enhancement Committee (SEC) has credited hard work and an influx of overseas-based Salisburians with the success of the Salisbury Reunion over the summer.

In his chairman’s report for SEC’s 3rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) held recently, Curth Charles said it was a long and hard fought effort for almost two years to create the best reunion that has ever taken place in Dominica.

“We were blessed with sponsors who gave their hard earned cash and kind, energetic and generous Salisburians living overseas who came back in huge numbers to enjoy this wonderful event we put together. Mainly it was blessed with hard-working Jean Bawi (Salisbury people) who dedicated their time, money and effort to ensure that the Reunion happened,” he noted.

Charles has served as chairman for four consecutive years since the committee’s formation. He did not seek re-election this term for what he said were “personal reasons.”

According to him, “There will be many unsung heroes that many people will never know of, those who prepared food, transported items, built structures, made phone calls, organized events, made decorations, cleaned and acted as security officers.”

Several people who dedicated their services to the Salisbury Reunion were also awarded by Charles as the outgoing chairman. Those recognized were: Reginald John, Lauren Frederick, Nurse Agatha Shillingford, Principal Burton Vidal and Velma Pierre Louis.

Meantime, the committee’s treasurer, Candia Joseph noted that total revenue of $276,545 was recorded for the year in review. Total expenditure for the year was $268,964.10.

Congratulations to everyone who was involved in this reunion. It was soooooo good. Almost 4 months on I am still dreaming about it and wish it was happening now. A special well done to the locals as they ensured there was no violence. CONGRATS. Although there was not a huge profit there was a profit nonetheless. This is the first time. It will only get better.

Well, after making over a quarter million dollars in revenue on mostly volunteer work and substantial financial backing from sponsors, and still only making less than 10k in profits?…. I can see why the chairman would not seek re-election. BTW folks I’m not a Salisburian. I’m just trying to be objective here and I’m very aware that the SEC is a non-profit organization; but now it looks like the SEC would have to rely on the locals for support in fundraisers in order to stay afloat and to make any meaningful contributions to the community before the next reunion. Whereas, they could have managed that huge influx of cash from oversees patrons more conservatively in order to fund any charity events that would have been in the pipeline following the reunion. It seems to me that the executive committee needs to be shaken up. That being said, it was an excellent effort by all parties involved. Those village reunions really help the local economies tremendously and I hope those villages that have not started would jump on the band wagon.

First of All SEC gave the information of their direct financial activities and that is accountability that can not be challenged.

How you looked at other benefits to Salisbury and Dominica?

Roughly one thousand returning people from Salisbury.
Benefits to Airlines, Customs(Barrels Galore), Car Rentals, Supermarkets, restaurants, Bands, Sounds Systems and local souvenirs shops.
Most importantly the priceless re-uniting of Families and the building of new friendship.
Salisbury Reunion 2011 was a tremendous success.

This sums it all up. The benefit was distributed thru the entire island. The reunion was a huge undertaking & to report a profit is highly commendable. I take my hat out to SEC. Congratulations & a job well done!!

It is quite clear you are not a Jean Bawi and it is even more clear that you are not in touch with the world of business and economics. Try asking the organizers of World Creole Music Festival about income and expenditure. They would love to be in a position to say ‘We made $10,000 profit’. This reunion was not about profit. It was about hosting an event to bring Salisbury people together and that goal was achieved. Not one Saisbury person is complaining and I would advise you to do the same. By the way, I guess you have not noticed, Salisbury people are proactive and not reactive. We did not wait for your money to hold this reunion.

With this said, congratulations to a very successful SEC team who hosted a very big event and made it a massive success.
