The government of Dominica will be conducting a trial run at the much touted Venezuela-funded abattoir situated in Layou Park as it sets to open for operation.

The government is also finalizing recruitment of staff for the management of the facility, according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

He made the declarations during a site visit at Layou Park on Monday.

“We look forward to the trial run, there will be a trial run of the abattoir where we will be slaughtering some pigs and also some chicken,” he said. “We are inviting farmers for the demonstration…so people will have a appreciation of how the abbatoir will be functioning.”

He noted that in the next two weeks his government will be finalizing the recruitment of the staff to manage the abattoir.

“The Ministry of Agriculture has been advertising the various positions available and we look forward to the commencement,” he stated.

He said $4-million have been allocated in the National Budget to provide assistance for existing and potential livestock farmers.

“The whole idea in the first instance, as was articulated in the budget address, is to try to get about 12 percent of the poultry market in Dominica as a first step,” he said. “Clearly this is a huge opportunity for us.”

During his presentation of the National Budget on July 24, the Prime Ministers stated that the contractor has confirmed that the abattoir will be commissioned and handed over by the end of September.

He noted that the objectives of Government in enhancing food and nutrition security, is to make the country self-sufficient in the production of pork and poultry.

He said the facility creates the opportunity for Dominica to take advantage of the huge domestic market available for pork and poultry products.

“At the end of the day, the success of this will depend on our consumption practices and the choice we make whether to buy local or imported,” he added.

Authorities say the abattior costs about $10-million. They say upon completion it will have a capacity output of 1,000 birds per hour and 50 pigs per day. They say it was being built to ensure food security, reduce the import bill and to provide employment in Dominica.

The facility was set to be completed by October 2013.

After that various deadlines were given for its completion including January 2014 and March 2014.

@Massacre – I myself was wondering about Roosevelt’s shirt. Quite to often when one sees Roosevelt at some function, is the “same” red shirt he has on.

Now we all know Roosevelt & his cavalry of incompetents and misfits are very unimaginative and creative when it comes to ideas to boost the country’s economy. But alas, to have a wardrobe of the same red shirt – Nah man Roosevelt,……..(smh). I say wardrobe because I don’t want to think is the same red shirt Roosevelt is using over and over on so many occasions.

Then again, maybe Roosevelt is trying to play cartoon. You know how those cartoons always wear the same main clothes in every episode they appear in.

The abattoir!! The roads to get to the abattoir are a joke as they are in such disrepair! There was no environmental test done on the site and the abattoir is built on the water table to the whole of the Layou Valley which means if there is any leakage the Layou river and all the water in the area will be tainted! This is a disaster in itself waiting to happen. The Layou river is one of the biggest and nicest in Dominica!! So it could be ruined??? It is so very sad to see the farmers where we live totally suffering, they have lost everything, they are struggling to make a living. Organic farming is the way to go Dominica could be rich and the farmers could again make a living! This abattoir is totally not necessary and a waste of money it is truly very sad. It is very difficult to rear animals properly, they take a lot of maintenance and care plus money to start the business! I honestly do not see it working!!!!

No environmental study done?? Surely that should have been crucial to the site? Why was an environmental study not done?

1,000 birds per hour, so if it is open for 6 hours a day for 5 days per week that is 30,000 birds per week. 52 weeks per year is 1,560,000 birds. Anyone got a plan for how we produce the grain to feed 1,560,000 birds per year?

  17. August 11, 2015

the abattoir is a good thing but there is no guarantee that the chicken & the other types of meat will be cheaper than the imported ones .if this can be done then the real goal & objective of the abattoir will be realize. volume production of livestock & cheap priced animal feeds will make a difference then we must watch the greed and bobol factors.

Dominicans don’t need a trial run, what we need is a drastic reduction in price. I believe this abattoire will be a failure and my reasons are not political. How is the Government going to compete with the Dominican business men who have already made millions while Government was asleep, and we were suffering with no price control. They can afford to reduce their prices regardless to whatever duties are put on chicken parts. Does Skeritt really believe companies in Dominica are just doing to close shop just like that because of an abattoire. Presently, chicken whole legs and drum sticks are being sold in the U.S. retailed at 28 cents a pound. If the retail price is 28 cents, therefore the whole sale price to these big company who orders hundreds of tons must be around 5 to 10 cents.

LIAT flying nonstop from Ho Chiming China to Dominica you know; with one stop over at Argyle International Airport in St. Vincent! I hear the reason LIAT is compelled to make that stop in St. Vincent is to get clearance from Ralph Gonzalez to proceed to Dominica.

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

Ooooooooooooooooopppppppppppppppppppppppsssssssssss: Sorry my mistake Skerrit and Wade have a none existence Airline draped painted in the Dominica flag, flying across America, to Dominica, dem say they only serving the Cabal members in first class with food and rum oui!

      August 11, 2015

Rightly so, they shouldnt just “GET” they have to “BUY” is a business they running. Farming destroyed but yet still agricultural exports increasing…. I wonder where you get your stats from

    • Francisco Telemaque
      August 12, 2015

According to the amount of chicken and pigs Skerrit claims will be killed means he will have to produce a million pigs per year, and million chicken per year.

That means they will have to produce eight-three (83,333) thousand, three hundred thirty-three chickens, and eighty-three (83,333) thousand three hundred thirty-three young pigs each month; and even so they will drop short of four chickens, and four pigs respectively.

Hahahahahahahahahahahah; there is no probability of accomplishing that!

      • Humpty Dumpty...
        August 11, 2015

Sweet Pea, if you look at the news articles, you will see one which says GORDON HENDERSON SPEAKS!! Gordon Henderson was supposed to have been honored this year at the WCMF as a founding member of the great band Exile One. Exile One and Gordon have been some of the very greatest of ambassadors for Dominica on the world stage since the late sixties/early seventies. The decision was made and announced by Wadix as one of the organizers of the WCMF. However, CABINET decides one the final list of performers for the festival. Why that is, I really do not understand!! They have no business deciding on such as they are not musicians on experts on cultural activity planning!! So they decide that Gordon WILL NOT PERFORM. We can only conclude that they came to this decision because he has been recently critical of the government. We will we see the light and halt this downward spiral???? No to Gordon but yes to other FOREIGN ‘ambassadors’ whose credentials are seriously tainted!!! SICK….SICK

    • The Real Facts
      August 11, 2015

You certainly hold a consistent grudge against the PM. Harboring hatred is not good for your mortal and spiritual health.
What is your beef against him? Spill it out and get it over and done with. If it is something worthwhile, it will make you feel better, never to mention it again. This is good therapy for your heart, mind, brains and soul.
