The Government of Dominica continues to be relentless in its strategies to provide potable water to all communities across the island.
On Tuesday, September 29th GIS News visited the community of Wesley where a water filtration system has been established to service the community; still braving the effects of Tropical Storm Erika.
For the past four days, a three-man team representing US-based company, DEKA Research and Development and a volunteer organization, ‘Team Rubicon’ has been working steadily on the ground.
Edward Uhring is one of the field engineers on the job.
“We were working in water purification for quite some time and when we heard news that Dominica had been impacted by localized flooding, we realized that we could make a substantial impact here and provide clean water.
“We came here because of the Ministry of Health; they provided us with a lot of guidance in terms of where our machines would create the most impact. We were told that they have seen widespread fecal coliform contamination throughout the island and they felt that we could have the maximum impact at this site,” he said.
Athenia Benjamin, Labour Party Caretaker for Woodford Hill says she is pleased with the assistance extended to the community.
“People came here to fill their containers. The process is ongoing so the people can come back to replenish. We have water in the rivers close by that can be used for daily chores but this is better for drinking.
“I think it’s useful,” she said. “It’s a very good gesture from the guys from DEKA. They are doing a fine job in the community.”
“Dominica Labour Party (DLP) candidate for Wesley Constituency, Athenia Benjamin, is asking that the 400 acres of land purchased by the United Workers Party (UWP) to construct an International Airport should be returned to the farmers.”

Note, I am pleased about the water purification system but Colibistrie and Colihaut need one too, if not more. Don’t say that those responsible have not been warned should there be an outbreak of water-borne diseases. in those communities.
