Young Dominicans get on-the-job training

One of the young men on the job

As part of government’s thrust to prepare young people for the job market, five young men from the Roseau Valley area were hired under governments Apprenticeship Programme, a recent initiative created to provide on the job training.

According to GIS news, Parliamentary Representative for The Roseau Valley Constituency, Dr. John Colin McIntyre paid a visit to the site of the project Monday morning where a group of young men were actively involved in stone masonry.

“We’ve been speaking about training and returning our young people in Dominica because we have started losing this fine art called stone masonry.  I saw it fit to employ some of the young guys in the area,” the minister said.

These young men are being trained over a period of nine weeks and are receiving a stipend of $50 a day for their training.

The parliamentary representative is asking Dominicans to support these young men as they move forward.

“What I’d like Dominicans to do is embrace these young men into jobs, in terms of enhancing their properties around the various parts of Dominica.  What we hope to do is to take this sort of training out of the Roseau Valley into other areas and retool a lot of young guys to get them into the trade,” he said.

The apprenticeship programme falls under the small business support unit.

The Doc realize that coming to TR and paying for bottles for man, who line up at the rum shop in TR is not a great things, so he turn his tactics right now

Also all his fail promises he promised many of us in TR, during the past election for which he did not hold up to, I look at this as nothing more than a small portion of his promises, nothing more nothing less

Doc, you fool me once shame on you, you fool me twice shame on me

What a programme. It is nice to see our young people on a programme where, they will gain experience, confidence, and independence.

As little as it seems, paying $50.00 a day will also give them an incentive to want to work. One day they will earn more than $50.00 and they will be able to build their own houses.

Good luck to all of them.

five is better than none, but really five is a negligible amount of people as compared to the unemployed. government needs to better than that. there is no work in the country

That’s a grand scheme that should be spread around the island. Target six at a time each constituency. But Dr. Mac what you need to do is fix properly the Copthall road instead of all those patches. there is still a whole lot of pot holes wrecking my shocks.

Great idea. Isn’t that what the Youth Skills Training does? And $50 a day? I disagree with that. When these young men are on training and receiving that amount a day, they want more when they go out on the job market, and we all know where that stands. Also, teach them to dress appropriately for the job. Doing masonry with slippers on? chuupes

This is not a bad idea. But from the pic it does not look like they are teaching them for the construction field. The first thing u want to teach young work is that safety comes first at all times. So from the pic i waould that part has been left out.

Any programme to get our children occupied is great. The program is like the skills training but the payment is five times more than my son got at the youth centre. The skills training is good but they should also pay the fifty dollars too.Same idea same government.Come on Mr pascal pay the youth a better salary too.

The Youth Division doesn’t pay a salary but a stipend… Its what their budget can afford…

That $50 coming straight from the financial centre and their pockets are much deeper…

Good initiative I must say! A lot better than having them line up at the RED Clinic in such a demeaning and pitiful way for handouts.

Just maybe a Masonry & Related Skills Training Center can be opened in the valley for all to attend. This would eventually brand the valley area for having such a valuable and well paying skill. It will also give our young men/ women the upper edge in gaing employment in that trade if they choose to migrate one day thus enabling them to keep sending back home to family etc. That is a dying skill that is highly sought after regionally..

    Assertive, NOT Agressive!

This is so great! A small group but a start towards the goal of providing job skills and employment for people in DA. Let’s hope the gov’t continues to expand these opportunities for people.

50 dollars a day is a stipend? so many people don’t even make that… call it what it is, it’s a salary, well it is for a lot of people… by the way, the minimum wage needs to be addressed

So should pay them the $50.00 stipend or are you saying it is too much or not enough?. Do you think the programme is a good one?

if the children were working everyday they were making 1000 a month.More than some of us make
hope they put it to good use we must not only employ and give but also teach the value of money

This is interesting, how do I obtain information about this and refer young men to this program. I know a few frustrated graduated who are turning to selling weed as a career to earn an income.
