The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MOE) in partnership with the National Bank of Dominica (NBD) launches the second biennial Excellence in Teaching Awards this Friday, February 26 at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium conference room.
The event is carded for 11:00 a.m.
This year’s theme is: “Teachers Transform Tomorrow – Today.” At the launching, Ministry officials and bank representatives will conclude formalities paving the way for a successful event on Saturday, March 13, 2010.
The MOE/NBD Excellence in Teaching Awards is designed to celebrate and publicly acknowledge the efforts of outstanding teachers in Dominica, since effective teachers are critical to a strong school system.
The MOE/NBD Excellence in Teaching Awards was formulated with the following objectives in mind:
· To reward outstanding teachers for their hard work and effort
· To recognize and appreciate the talent and contribution of outstanding teachers
· To encourage all teachers to practice a high degree of professionalism
· To reward teachers for their Professional Excellence
· To motivate all teachers to improve the quality of teaching and learning
· To make teachers feel valued, valuable and appreciated
The award shall consist of four (4) categories:
· Outstanding Primary School Teacher
· Outstanding Secondary School Teacher
· Outstanding Aspiring Primary School Teacher
· Outstanding Aspiring Secondary School Teacher
Nominees for outstanding teachers must:
· Be full-time classroom teachers of primary or secondary schools
· Be Dominican citizens or non-nationals residing in the Commonwealth of Dominica
· Have at least five years teaching experience in the commonwealth of Dominica
Nominees for aspiring teachers must:
· Have less than five years teaching experience in Dominica
· Be full-time primary or secondary school teachers
· Be Dominican citizens or a non-national residing in Dominica
All finalists receive awards, but the primary and secondary school Teacher of the Year each receive $5,000.00 and a plaque. The primary and secondary outstanding aspiring teachers will each receive $1,500.00.
The 2008 Secondary School Teacher of the Year award went to Isabella Prentice of the Convent High School, the Award for Primary School Teacher of the Year was won by Cyrilla Anselm of the Goodwill Primary, Elisa Guiste of St. Martin Primary was Aspiring Teacher primary and Sirlewis Joseph of St. Martin Secondary was Aspiring Teacher secondary.
