The Kiwanis Club of Waitukubuli has once again helped another less fortunate individual on the island and stuck to its motto of ‘serving the children of the world’ by donating a wheelchair to a needy person in Delices.
Darcy, a resident of the House of Hope in Delices who suffers from cerebral palsy, was the recipient of a brand new wheelchair just two days before Christmas.
The presentation ceremony was attended by members of the Kiwanis Club of Waitukubuli, Lieutenant Governor of Division 27 (of which Dominica is a part) Louis Sealy, and Governor of the Eastern Canada and the Caribbean District of Kiwanis International, Governor Paul Toussaint.
Governor Toussaint, who sourced the wheelchair, said that he is happy to make the donation to the house of hope.
“I visited the house of hope a month ago and I noticed that they need a wheel chair. I promised to come back to Dominica with a wheel chair and today my promise is fulfilled,” he said.
He also congratulated Alexander on the work that he and his team are doing at the House of Hope and encouraged the Club of Waitukubuli to continue to assist.
The Lieutenant Governor Louis Sealy said he is happy to lend his support to the Club also and looks forward to working together to help the less fortunate.
“I want to say that this is a very exciting time just to see the pleasure and smile on the face of the children so I am happy to participate in this venture,” he stated. “I hope that we will continue to work together in terms of helping the less fortunate particularly doing things to help the children.”
President of the Kiwanis Club of Waitukubuli, Augustus Riviere, said the club continues to help the underprivileged in society. “We’re happy to have been able to make this donation to Darcy here at the House of Hope,” he said. “We continue to seek out the less fortunate in society and help them in any way we can.”
Heskeith Alexander, President of the Sacred Heart Conference (which runs the House of Hope), expressed sincere gratitude for the wheelchair noting that Darcy was in true need of a wheelchair and the donation was very timely.
“Darcy is actually doing very well but we couldn’t move her from her place without carrying her,” he said, “so we are very happy to be presented with a very beautiful wheelchair. She will be a bit more mobile now.”
The club also has a number of projects scheduled for 2011.
“We will be having an essay presentation competition for high schools as well as beautification projects and donations to various organizations on the island, Riviere said. “So you can look out for more youth focused projects and activities from the Kiwanis Club of Waitukubuli in the coming year.”
