Eight volunteers, who it is said have given selflessly for a number of years, have been awarded and told that their services are critical to furthering education in Dominica.
Helen Sabin, Philsbert Joseph, Claudia Toussaint, Kirk Edwards, Dhanelle Cuffy, Ayisha Richards, Kay Honore and Luther Martin are among 70 volunteers currently giving their time and effort to the Adult Education Division’s various programs around the island.
Speaking during a dinner and awards ceremony held on Thursday evening at the Public Service Union Hall, Minister for Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs, Gloria Shillingford, said the volunteers’ time makes it possible to implement the wide selection of programs that the Division currently hosts.
“The recruitment of facilitators is not an easy task and so the ministry of education is sincerely grateful to those of you who continue to willing make your services for the continuity of the Adult Education programs,” she said. “In fact your services are critical to the success of the division’s programming without you, it would be quite impossible to implement the number of programmes that we do, given our limited human and financial resources.”
Shillingford said further that the knowledge passed on will make students more productive citizens and impact positively on the individual, their community and the country.
“Facilitators let me point out the work that you do within the walls of the class room from which you operate does not remain there. The knowledge and skills which you pass on to your students is the means by which they will become employable, hence productive,” she pointed out. “It is therefore their passport to personal growth and development and this of course is expected to impact positively on their communities and country, by extension.”
The recognition dinner and awards ceremony was also part of the Adult Education month observed under the theme “Continuing education in a global and challenging environment”.
