Dominica State College (DSC) student, Akeem Lowe, is expected to leave Dominica in the next few days to attend the World Youth Summit for Young ICT persons carded for September 9 to 11 in Costa Rica.
He is following in the footsteps of his predecessors, Tammie Jean Jacques and Ather Pemberton, who were previous participants at this global youth meeting.
During the summit Lowe, from Portsmouth, will participate in a number of workshops and have the opportunity to meet and mingle with other world youths and leading industry innovators, pioneers and professionals.
The event is being hosted by the Government of Costa Rica and is organized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) together with other organizations in the United Nation family, as well as partners from governments, industry, media and civil society.
In 2012, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, declared Youth as one of the five main priorities in the run to 2015, the date for delivering the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Global Summit in Costa Rica will bring young people around the globe together – both physically and virtually – to participate in a series of workshops, presentations and conversations.
These interactive sessions will focus on the use of Technology for social good – specifically information and communication technologies (ICTs) – while seeking to influence the United Nations and civil society engagement processes to prioritize ICT inclusion as a central pillar of the Post-2015 development agenda.
The Summit will issue a multimedia statement from young people onsite and virtually, for delivery to the United Nations General Assembly in September by the President of Costa Rica.
Lowe’s participation was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information, the Dominica State College and the ITU Offices in Barbados and Geneva.
He is expected to return to Dominica on September 12.
