Call made for image improvement at Dominica State College

Eliud Williams

Former Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Dominica State College (DSC), Eliud Williams has called for improvements in the educational and operational methods of the institution, even as improvements are underway for its physical infrastructure.

Williams was addressing the launching of the DSC’s tax course, Sunday, which is currently underway at the Bath Estate Campus.

Williams called for an upgrade in teaching staff pursuant to a move towards student-centered learning in an effort to improve its image within the next two to three years.

“The Board of Governors determined that the college needs to make the improvement of its image a priority. DSC must ensure that its graduates are easily recognized by his speech and by his preparation for the work force. The college must provide an experience for its students that include academics and other co-curricular activities. Also, DSC must embark on the conversion of the current chalk-and-talk model of education to one driven by a student-centered learning model, in which the curriculum and teaching methods are relevant and dynamic,” Williams remarked.

He added, “DSC must therefore, also, take immediate steps to increase the quality of its teaching instructors and the board and administration must continue to work with Government’s donor agencies and other supporting institutions towards the improvement of the physical infrastructure and such a program is already well underway.”

Williams expects that despite the complexity normally associated with taxation, the course will still be informative, relevant and stimulating to participants.

This is the second hosting of the DSC’s tax course and this year’s course is titled “International Taxation in the Caribbean Context”.

In order to realize a difference at the DSC, the change must begin from the top. The instructors must lead by example. Respect for self and students should be the order of the day. When you as an instructor are involved with your student, what do you think the end result will be? Furthermore, some of the so-called instructors are not worth their salt. Classic case of square pegs in wrong holes.

but Mr not easy. So when you was chairman you didn’t see these changes to make? Now you out you seeing the light or what?

As a former student of the DSC, I have no faith in the board or administration of the college. The college needs to be overhauled and duly affiliated with UWI if we have any hope of seeing better education for all

I have already tried and have my voice fall on deaf ears. The only difference I can possibly make is to persuade others to cry out so that in one voice we may tell our administration what needs to be done!

The college students are not representing the school well. Their common usage of the English language is pathetic. It is even hard to determine how they graduate high school. So yes indeed, improvement is always needed.

I could not agree more. The DSC really needs an overhaul, externally and internally……..you know what I mean? Sad to say many of the DSC graduates seem ill prepared for the world of work, they lack the finishing and polish required for the work force. As an employer, i find that many of the academic programs leave much to be desired. This puts the graduates in a position where they are unable to compete. I believe that education is a right not a privilege, but this education must be of high quality, not mass production!! Educate our youngsters well so that they could build a better future which we may be lucky to live in!!
