UPDATE: CHS tops 2012 CXC Exams; Dominican student receives 11 Ones for the first time

The Convent High School (CHS) has topped the 2012 CXC exams in Dominica, while a St. Mary’s Academy (SMA) student received 11 Ones – the first ever recorded on the island

Education ministry sources have said that CHS received an overall average of 94.8.

This is followed by the Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School at 89 and St. Mary’s Academy at 80.3.

Information reaching DNO has also revealed that a Dominican student has received 11 Ones for the first time. This distinction goes to Cornell J Jno Baptiste of SMA.

Other top performing studentts are Leah V Dodds of CHS who got 10 Ones, Malik Stuart of PCSS who got 9 Ones and 1 Two.

Arlene S Ferrol, Jelaine Letang and Zarisia J Alcendor of CHS got 9 Ones and Kitwanie S Carbon of CHS 8 Ones and 3 Twos.

Sources also revealed that there is a slight decrease in Grade One passes in the exams this year from 14 percent to 13 percent.

The Ministry of Education is releasing the results of the 2012 exams this morning.

As a parent of a high school girl, I can tell you that alot depends on a childs foundation. We normally leave all the work to the teachers and hope the childrent get into a school like the so called “excellent” schools and automatically the child will excel. Excellence starts from preschool…it doesn’t matter where a child goes, if she/he has to do well they will do well. Parents need to take an active role in their child’s life, and it should not start in fifth form. In addition, teenagers need to take responsibility for their future, they have to want it enough to achieve it. Haven’t you all heard of the age old saying “YOU CAN BRING THE COW TO THE WATER, BUT YOU CANNOT MAKE IT DRINK”??

How is it that Nehemiah Secondary has such a high pass rate and yet still it is not high lighted? Congratulations to DSDA and the young man from Grandbay. It is interesting to note that the private church schools like DSDA, Convent, and SMA did so well. God does not sleep.

From what was reported by another news organization, one student wrote the exam from that school. Any school could get a 100 percent pass rate if they sent one student to sit exams.

Congrats to the two students of Grand Bay! Let your accomplishment be your motivation.Thank you U.W.P. for building the secondary school in Grand Bay The people opposed government throughout your term in office but you never neglected them. Now they have been supporting their D.L.P. for over a decade and are the most unlikely people to get any attention from government. The few renowned puppets in Grand Bay that continue to lead the people into this trap, time will put their words to test and their integrity to be verified.

you all are the reason why children have to feel low about themselves… to the people talkin about DGS.. dont you know, Convent always accepts the best students? its a private school so its no surprise when they top CXC.. DGS and the other schools accept all students regardless of how well they do at the common entrance.. they get the entire.. bunch! everyone gets a chance at CXC even the ones who seem mentally incapable…. they fail…sometimes its not all their fault but for various health reasons.. so DONT JUDGE THE DGS OR THE OTHER PUBLIC SCHOOLS.. THUMBS UP TO THE TEACHERS WHO DEAL WITH THESE KINDS OF STUDENTS! and big up to the students of the DGS who did great this year! good work though SDA.. n convent.

Where are the Public Schools to be highlighted, it seem the standard of Education/Learining in the private schools is much higher and much more discipline and controllable. There are two many students in schools like pss, itss, grammar school and the others. Don`t you see the mess that goes on in PSS? Children not Students are out of control not even the prinicple and
Teachers are able to control these Children……..just a quick post

Congrats to the top students and their respective schools. However I’m very dissappointed that government schools like PSS do not allow their students to do as much subjects as they can handle. From next year the students will be limited to sit only 7 subjects at CXC. Talk about stifling the potential of your bright and promising students. Ministry of Education, do something!!

But sometimes we have to ask – does it fit in the school’s schedule? or else why not take the classes privately and ask the school and/or Ministry of Education for permission to use the school as a center for taking these exams? Or have the student take some at the end of fortuh(I do not know with SBAs etc if this is still possible.

I am seeing these negative comments about CHS coming in and I have to wonder if they are not cases of sour grapes. Who says CHS gets the “best teachers”? There are still many teachers at CHS who came straight from DSC and are only going to be there for a little while. The ‘secret’ behind CHS’ success is that the students pray and work hard, the parents are very involved and are willing to invest in their children’s education, and the teachers are willing to stay till 6:00 p.m for free.

Convent and SMA dont operate on even playing fields:
    – SMA only accepts students with bursaries and scholarships to register for their 1st form
    – Convent selects its top 5th form students in every subject to register with the school for final exams. Average students are asked to register privately for the exams.
Is it any surprise, then?…the CXC statistics??? Hats off to ALL the other schools who measured up to their performance

    • Anonymous

All schools recommend students for the exams. Even when there was the Clifton duping community college students had to be recommended for A-level exams. And if u are nother recommended u are to sit the exam privately if you choose. So ppl doing exams privately are choosing to do so. This applies to ALL schools.

Very good observation. These schools focus on attaining Ones but the overall development of students are ignored. Many students at these schools fall by the wayside. We hear only of those who excel. They care simply about their averages not students on a personal level. However, it is not true that SMA accept only students with scholarships and bursaries for their first forms.

The fact that CHS topped this year’s results comes as no surprise. The school is given the opportunity to CHOOSE the students it wishes to have, they have the most qualified teachers and takes the biggest bite out of the Ministry of Education & HRD. The question is HOW MUCh VALUE do they ADD to the students they choose. In the absence of a LEVEL playing field, one cannot talk of best school in Dominica.

Nontheless, congratulations are due to those students who excelled!!

    • bwa kwaieb
      August 15, 2012

That might be true to an extent. But maybe it’s because many kids who attend Convent and SMA have parents who actually sit down with their kids during the day and support their children in school. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to work with children of Convent High School, SMA or even St Martin Primary you’d notice a big difference in parents involvement for children of those schools than the other schools in Dominica. Their parents will actually show up to meetings and I know from experience that they’re actively involved in what goes on with their kids. Though I do believe that CHS gets the best teachers year after year and that’s definitely not fair. That responsibility falls on the ministry of education and not convent. At this point the school is pretty spoilt and will always expect to get the best teachers because they’re concerned about reputation and keeping standards! They’re well within their right to do so. I strongly believe that the real power behind CHS’s students success are the kids parents. Have you ever taught at one of those public schools in DA? Try to talk to mammy and she won’t even show up to hear what teacher have to say. If they show up is an attitude and talking over you like they know everything.

Some of these kids from primary school couldn’t handle the discipline it takes at CHS to be successful. That all boils down to the way they were raised!

Alas, Celebrate good news and stop looking for story… HATS Off to all thos all over and special hats off to the CHS. Keep up the discipline and committment that you are know for!

    • Ebony Mouse
      August 15, 2012

Has it ever occurred to you that CHS and SMA are both private schools who in fact hire their own teachers? Whereas the teachers need to be certified by the Ministry of Education, the school receives the applications and the principal conducts the interviews. So the Ministry doesn’t “send” the best teachers to CHS or SMA, the best teachers apply there first of all and then the school makes it a point of duty to hire the best. Can’t consider that unfair. It’s just competitive. And if parents want the best for their kids, they will try to get them into the best school. No harm no foul. That being said, PCSS is a public school and one might venture to say they don’t necessarily have the best teachers (I would disagree but…) and still Malik Stuart Managed 9 ones and a 2. Its more than just the teachers. It is the students’ level of discipline that makes the difference. Go Malik! Go Zarisia! Go Grand Bay! Congrats to CHS SDA and SMA.

11 ones is just one student’s performance. The overall school is based on the performance of all the students. So although this young man have gotten 11 ones the pass rate of CHS and DSDASS is higher than that of SMA placing them 3rd.

What you are talking about is OVERALL pass rate for the entire school system = ALL SCHOOLS. Comparing HOW WELL the schools did in relation to others.

On the other hand DGS of today usually make the headlines for less than educational prowes. Oh well, maybe next time they will try harder and take the appropriate headlines like CHS and SMA 8)
