Community man highlights improvements in behaviour of Grand Bay community

Young men collaborate with the older ones in a community project

Chairman of the Grand Bay Village Council Willie Fevrier has commended the Grand Bay community for its good behaviour exhibited over the past few months, which he beliveves is as a result of community service.

According to him, Grand Bay residents have also been heavily involved in the infrastructural development projects.

For years, Grand Bay has received bad press for its frequent incidents of crime, but Fevrier said that there seems  to have been a turnaround within the past few months.

In an exclusive interview with Dominica News Online, Fevrier said that this positive behaviour is as a result of collective efforts from community members.

Work being done on a village road

“Things are pretty good right now … Things are quiet. We haven’t heard of any recent incidents. I think generally people have come to realize that enough is enough. I mean we’ve had too much bad press. And more people are speaking up against the violence and the drug abuse and so forth,” he said.

“In the past, a lot of people used to remain silent and only a few of us used to speak out; now you find more people will stand up and speak out and they will make an effort to change it. There are a number of people who have come on board and offering to do beach cleanup … people who probably would not have been active in these things,” Fevrier said.

According to him, a violent free Real Mas 2010 is proof of this improvement in behaviour.  He said that pre-carnival sensitization meetings and cooperation of carnival participants and bands helped promote this conduct.

He described Grand Bay’s carnival as successful, with a great police presence. However, he recognizes that the village council cannot change the way Carnival is runned in Grand Bay, rather it is the onus of the community to effect that change. Many a time, persons enter the band with weapons, and there have been reports of persons shooting off guns in the air; but this was not so this year.

Meantime, Fevrier noted that the council along with other community groups have seen the completion of several other projects in the community, including the construction of 10 new homes and other housing repair projects.

He said that a total of four out of five projects which began on Community Day of Service 2009 have been completed by villagers.

Materials for a drainage project conducted by the Sports Entertainment and Cultural Organisation of Grand Bay were provided by the village council. The project, which began last Community Day of Service was completed last Saturday.

Another highlight of community work is the undertaking of several other infrastructural projects and the recent formation of a committee, to plan and organise Feast of St Isidore.

Efforts are also underway to form a youth academy to increase the youths’ participation in sports, Fevrier said, adding “people feel a sense of hope.”

I notice you’ve failed to mention that the success of the incident free Carnival this year was largely in part due to the the New Parl Rep, the Hon. Justina Charles.

………………………and while one cannot deny it was a collective effort from the community, one still should not forget that she was the one who decided to take the bull by its horns this year and took the lead and set the pace to make it happen.

Because over the years you and your Council have failed in your attempts to get it done………….so give the lady her credit brother, open your damn mouth and give her the praise, because with all due respect, you’;ve done no JACK S***!!!!!!

We are a strong, bold and intelligent people and it therefore is incumbent upon us to to take back our village. It has to start with the village council and then improve from there on. I applaud you, teracher,Willie for working with the community to move it on forward. Sometimes it takes one person to make a dofference. If no one stands for something, it’s quite easy for us to fall for everything. We must clean our house in order that others look up to us.

Together there is unity and we must continue to support and encourage each other so that change can improve. Yes, we need to bring the young brothers and sisters with talent back. Being involved socially is quite important. Without that social structure there is always place for idlenessespecially among the youth.
What about the youth groups of the past, are they still in existence?

To Dubiqois, what are the deeper issues that you think need to be addressed, and can you shed some solutions? Don’t just mention problems if you have no solutions.

      Out of South City:

Your point (problems w/out solutions) has been well taken. Historically and statistically, these are some of the issues in South City – and they are not unique to Grandbay. They are prevalent island-wide.

Problem: Unemployment ( particularly amongst the young)

Solution: Diverse education in hospitality, construction, better and diverse farming techniques. The traditional education may not suit the needs of the young. We need to look at trade education more closely (masonry, electrical, mechanics, etc). Of course, you cannot educate and have people idle. The government needs to create employment and regional markets for agriculture and crop.

      Problem: Crime

Solution: Give the young other incentives. Creating sports programs may help, but is temporary. In addition to the above, we need to look at sports, music, karate, and the arts academies. Provide assistance programs such as counseling, etc.

      More to come…

      i disagree, it has to start with ecah individual, then family, then community; we must stop the sutewaying and report crimes, effectively so we can stand in court as firm witnesses, we must get off our lazy asses and work and create jobs and not wait for our young men to go into drugs to menatain us, and our young ladies into prostitution to support us;
shame on you parents!!!!!!!! adolescent complete your education and obtain a foundation before you think of sexing, cause with sexing comes pregnancy and you all damn well not ready to be parents, by opening your legs you all are creating this society of drug pushers, cause when you got the little yuts and you cannot maintain them you put them very early into prostitution and drugs to support you and them, and thats why this problem is a cycle that doesnt end
shame on the parents that have their yuts tending their marijuana plants or trade; and who encourages them to steal from the hard working folks

granbai is a cool place, very nice, wouldnt mind being there in the future but man poeple got to keep on striving for excellence and drug free

A great beginning to what I hope will lead to sustainable community development and balance. However, let us keep in mind that self-help goes only so far; and at one point, the village council and community members must address the issue of long-term socio-economic, education, employment, and infastructural development.

Historically, Grandbay has always been underrepresented politically and economically. That needs to change.

So, although I applaud these efforts, and commend the community in its self-help approach, there are deeper issues that need to be looked at in order to remedy years of neglect and self-injury.

Way to go Grand Bay. Working as a TEAM is great, because together everyone achieves more.

Congratulations to the village of Grand Bay for all the great work that the residents are doing and for all that they have already accomplished. May this positive attitude spread to the other villages as we continue to improve our various communities.

When minds are intellectually focused and hands are skillfully occupied, there is no room for riotous and senseless behavior.
