Construction on school in Newtown to begin next year

Construction of a New primary school in Newtown could begin in the new year, according to Education Minister Petter Saint Jean.

“The Newtown Primary School is still very much in the air and we anticipate that by the first quarter of 2013  we should see the commencement of work,” the minister said.

According to Saint Jean there has been a ‘slight difficulty’ in the tendering process but work should begin when a contractor is identified. “It was opened to international tenders and we anticipated previously the companies within Dominica would have bidded for the project but it was opened to all and sundry and consequently the time period was extended …but once a contractor has been selected we should see the commencement of work,” he affirmed.

He also said that all ‘ground work’ on the project has been completed.

“Everything that had to be done by the Government of Dominica has been done … so we have done all of the retaining walls, all of the ancillary works so we expect by the first quarter of 2013 construction to begin,” the minister said.

In August this year, Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau South Constituency, Ambrose George, told the Government Information Serice (GIS) that the new school is going to be a modern one.

“The designs make provision for three levels: the ground level, a first floor and a second floor. The components of those floors will include science labs, cafeteria, an auditorium, office space for principal and vice principal, space for staff of the school, and approximately twelve classrooms,” George pointed out. “The school, when complete, will also have several amenities such as an art room and a computer room.”

The new Newtown Primary School will also make provision for physically challenged children, according to George.

The Project is being funded by the Government of Dominica and the Government of the People’s Republic of China.

More schools. Dominica is progressing. As it is said, “No child left behind.” May the youths take advantage of this golden opportunity to attend school, be diligent and to graduate also to a higher level. God bless them all.
