Denzel Guye is 2013 Island Scholar

Denzel Lester Guye is now free to choose a field of study at any university in the world thanks to determination and sacrifice.

Guye topped the list out of 42 candidates who took the GCE A level exams to be named the 2013 Island Scholar.

He along with April Faith Elizabeth Jules and Isaac Alfred topped the list.

The announcement was made during a brief ceremony held at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium conference room on Wednesday.

In an interview with DNO, Denzel’s mother, Sylvia Guye, said it was a proud moment for her as a parent and for her son.

“It’s a proud moment. I really feel overjoyed because I know he really worked extremely hard. So, I think he is just reaping the fruits of his labor. He gave up a lot. He made a lot of sacrifices and I am really happy for him and as a mother, I really feel good.”

And so did the young scholar’s father, Darnley Guye.

“I am very, very proud of my son I know he did what he had to do, and he did it with all his heart. And I think that is the reward for the things he gave up to get there,” he remarked.

Denzel said he is satisfied with the fruits of his labor and although he plans to begin his studies next year, he says he is still unsure of what to study.

“I intend to go to study by next year, I am hoping to either study engineering, or environmental policy or even environmental management and engineering…the competition was tight April was an excellent student as well as Isaac so… I was slightly surprised,” he stated.

Education minister, Petter St. Jean, said the island scholar is chosen based on the laws of the land and all students should maximize all available opportunities to enhance their academic goals.

“The student who has topped the GCE A level exams based on the University of Cambridge order of merit list. It must be noted that in order to rank the student, the criteria as legislated by the commonwealth of Dominica must be met”.

Those criteria include the following:

–         All private and school candidates are included

–         Candidates must be over the age of 16 and under the age of 20 on the last day on the month in which the examination for the award of the scholarship is held.

–         The award is open to male and female candidates. The candidates must take the general paper which is the GCE AS level subject to which the weighing of one is applied.

–         Candidates must take 3 GCE A level subjects to which the weighting of two is applied.

This year, 42 candidates wrote the exams. The order of merit ranking list from the University of Cambridge International, the examining body which ranks the candidates in order of their performance, identified the following candidates as the top three for the 2013 session.

-Denzel Lester Guye= Mathematics A, Chemistry A, * Economics A, Business Studies B, General paper A

-April Faith Elizabeth Jules = Mathematics A, Chemistry A, Physics A, and General Paper A

-Isaac Alfred =Mathematics A, Physics A, Economics A, and General Paper D

I congratulate the students for excelling in this year A level examinations. Take it from me, this exam is not a piece of cake. My only concern however is why is the government still issuing scholarships based on Cambridge criteria. We are trying to promote the DSC so this is a complete contradiction to the said plan. Why isn’t the top students in the Associate Degree program recognized? This is very backward thinking. This criteria is outdated and need to be revised. Dominica needs some young fresh minds to help the decision makers.

Congrate. please leave this island soon as possible. don’t wait people change there mind. I picture you as a doctor in medicine. your grade is much higher than a associate degree if it is an american standard. if you want to studies in U.S.A. let them grade you to there level. if you are not satified check a next school. you are going to shine. don’t take no long break keep going. My daughter is in the same field, a doctor in Psychologist. she have a bachelor from holland, which she took 4yrs instead of 6 yrs, she use to double her classes. She recieve 2 yrs credit, and now in the US going for her masters. She is on a scholarship. with very high grade, she recieve alot of credit which make her school fee cheaper. it not a easy road. Keep your head on, I am happy for you.

Very nice to see how clearly it is being explained this year that this honour is and has always been based on the results of Cambrige A level exams and has absolutely no bearing on the State college work. Last year, the results were danced and played around that the young lady who received that honour by Cambridge was barely allowed to enjoy her success.

Congratulations to you Mr. Guye for this success at the A levels!

Doods you seem to be an expert at everything. Why don’t you just congratulate the three youths and move on. This is not the first time that someone has been given the island Scholarship, so we are all aware of what is need to get to the universities.

    • Francisco Telemaque
      October 30, 2013

How many times do I have to say congratulations?

One can congratulate someone in many different ways; only that it takes people who can see further than their nose to detect, or read into what someone else has conveyed.

You know all who said I am talking rubbish, I granite they have absolutely no explanation better than I have given. If anyone wish to counter me, feel free to do so, however, give an explanation as to how it really works.

As for the one who told me to get an education; you do not know you see, so I will tell you, I have an education, and I paid for it myself. Both college and university, that is how I know!

Again here are my qualifications: BS; Electronic Engineering, BS Electrical Engineering; AA; Associate, in Arts, in the Liberal Arts, I also have an AS, Associate in Science in Electronic, that is a junior engineering degree in electronics.

Compounded with medical School drop out oui!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

So, now you know why I appear to know about everything, and mind you I showed great proficiency in medicine before I dropped!

So, when you read my opinions on anything medical, you need to take it seriously because I do not get into anything unless I know what I am talking about you see!

And that is why I can proudly write my name below anything I submit on DNO!

Now as for the fool who talk about straight from high school into Cambridge, explain to me what are the prerequisites you have that will afford you such opportunity? Maybe you can do that, but you will be there for the first two years before you can attempt any major.

Anyway thins usually work upside down for Dominicans, maybe every body else is right I (doh no eh)

You keep on saying you ‘dropped’ out of med school but you haven’t said why or give a reason. I think you are dunce, hence you were kicked out and you are lying saying you dropped out.

I will repeat, you are an IDIOT, ok?

Why did you stop at BS? What didn’t u do your masters then PHD? I guess you ‘dropped out.” hahahahahahahahaha

“Elizabeth Jules = Mathematics A, Chemistry A, Physics A, and General Paper A
    -Isaac Alfred =Mathematics A, Physics A, Economics A, and General Paper D”

You know one of my problem is that I scan read, and then make my comments, if I took my time to read everything in its entity, my first opinion might be different. Nevertheless here we are talking about GCE subjects at advanced level “A Level” yet someone believes that this guy, and I am not putting him down in any way, okay because I believe he has done well in high school; however to make the claims he can attend any university he wishes, is nothing more than a myth.

Wether you have a hundred advance level GCE, if you go to England with that you might be advised to attend a junior college first prior to attempting university, if by any chance a major university would want to accept you, a placement examination would have to be taken, that means one may end up at the same level as they would in junior college, after two years that individual should be in a position to obtain either an AA: Associate in Arts, or an Associate in Science, which will prepare them for four years of the real university training.

In any event it does not matter how many GCE one collects in the Caribbean, Dominica included, it boils down to a single GED equivalent in America.

    “Isaac Alfred =Mathematics A, Physics A, Economics A, and General Paper D”

As for Alfred, wether you are from Grand Bay, Marigot, or Wesley, if you are traveling with your transcripts, see if you can get them to delete that “D” because that can become an obstacle in a place like the U.S.

When a professor or teacher gives a student an D here that is the same as an F: Most failing students they give them a D simply to keep them in school. You have a good thing going for you in that in both physics and mathematics you secured an A; that is very good.

“Wether you have a hundred advance level GCE, if you go to England with that you might be advised to attend a junior college first prior to attempting university…”

You are an IDIOT. I never took A levels. I got nine O Levels with eight A’s and one B. I got accepted in a major university in the US, did my undegrad work, move on to grad and is presently working on my Phd. So I really don’t know what you are talking about.

You are living under a rock. Get off from underneath it and just congratulate the young man.

    • Joe
      October 30, 2013

This is absolute rubbish. Advanced level GCE exams qualify you for direct entry into the top UK universities (Oxford and Cambridge included).

Furthermore, A level exams qualify for you advanced standing (up to a year’s credit) in American and Canadian universities.

Dods, you seem to be quite ‘knowledgeable’ on a wide variety of matters. I suggest that you get your facts straight about this one. I know many products of the A’level system and they have had no problem getting placement at UK or US universities; one such example is the island scholar Sydney Jules who is now studying at Cambridge in the UK.

I really hope our kids are not reading your rubbish, and if they do, I am sure they are smart enough to identify it as such. May I ask you to tell this audience how well you did at A Levels? More over, have you asked some of our past island scholars how they did at A Levels? Get their opinions on the performance of these kids.

I urge you to use your writing skills to positively influence others as opposed to perfecting the art of discouraging those that are working hard to improve themselves and their country.

Francisco, I think that before you make comments on matters you appear to know nothing about, you need to do some reading and find the laws, rules and régulations governing the island scholar. And I was not asked to go to high school when I went to university in Europe with my A levels. In fact with the A levels an entire year was taken off my bachelors year. So get it straight before you mislead the public.

Congratulations to all the students, you all did very well especially Denzel.

Whereas I don’t believe the achievements are as watered down as the poster makes them out to be, I know for a fact that to get into either Cambridge or Oxford in the UK it takes much more than just the fact that you passed A levels with good grades. True though, the good grades opens the door for you but to get in is another matter. The high level of competition for few places means there is a rigorous interview and assessment process that follows the opening of the door.

Congrats to the top student and all who excelled in their exams, but DNO your journalists are not excelling and your editor is not excelling. Under the section criteria for awarding the scholar…bullets 3 and 4. the word “waiting” should definitely be “weighting”. Remember this paper goes to the world it is one thing for commentors to make such errors but when the reporters do that is just not good enough.

    • Ben Dover
      October 30, 2013

The New York Times goes around the world and it has a section for correcting errors. So what is your point really?

The error you pointed out could have been easily missed by anyone. I missed it and I am not stupid.

Everyone makes mistakes including the best top notched newspapers. Just one error in an entire article and you jumping up with excitement. Take a chill pill man.

      • Jamdominic

And so because you missed it it is ok to leave it alone? I am happy to see it is corrected although still with a typo error. btw you could suggest to DNO to have a section also for corrections where necessary then there would be no need to point it out here. A word to you and anyone else. Quality counts…lets not take it for granted.

Yes indeed he is free to chose a field of any discipline; whereas he can chose any University, that does not mean he will be automatically accepted!

That is not how it works in the educational system in the developed world! There are standards; first he has to apply, and based on the disciplines he studied wherever he graduate, that will determine which university will chose to accept him.

First of all he may be an “A” student in Dominica, and cannot even pass a placement test at some low level university, there are some ivy league universities where some may want to attend, however, their educational background will not allow them to stand on their steps.

Secondly, if Dominica Government intends to give him a scholarship, when we talk about any university in the world, we are not talking Cuba, where the Cuban government entertain them for free, tuition has to be paid before the student enter the class room at the beginning of the semester.

And some university in the world most Dominicans cannot afford even with government help! We need to learn not to become over excited, and make laughable comments you see; because some of us reading knows the ropes, been there done that!

On just about every island in the Caribbean we find foreign medical schools; one important thing to note about that is; many of the students who attends these medical school or universities, are not what one would say are the cream of the crop students. Many of them could not pass the preliminary examination to be accepted in a medical school here in the United States, or Canada, and that is why they end up in Dominica, Antigua, Grenada, St. Kitts, and places such as Mexico.

So, if it was easy to make it into any university in the world, maybe there would be no foreign students in Dominica studding medicine.

      Again …absolute rubbish !
He is being assessed in accordance with the University of Cambridge Advanced Level examinations. In “A” in these exams is an internationally recognized “A” by any standard. Ivy league universities will most certainly recognize his grades. To suggest that he may not be able to pass low level university placement tests is laughable.

Dods.. You wear your ignorance on your sleeves.. I attended top universities in both US and Canada and I can say with confidence that our island top students have what it takes to excel at the worlds top universities. They may not be as well rounded as students in the developed world, but when it comes to academics they definitely out perform.

Francisco: Do you know this child or his family? Do you have any respect for anyone at all? If you only knew this child and how hard he has worked and how hard his brothers before him have worked and how much his parents sacrifice and pray for their children (and the families of the other two scholars are dedicated too, eh), then you would just congratulate them.

      Francisco:

You have provided some excellent information about the educational system but please don’t be so negative.

I want to congratulate Mr. Denzel Guye. :-D

He will face his challenges. But His past accompishments vouch for his future success.

      Be proud of him!

He is one of your own, the cream of the Caribbean!

This is a young man any nation would be proud to own.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

It is probably best to evaluate each medical graduate on a case to case basis judging each one on his or her own merits rather than make blanket statements about all the graduates of Caribbean medical schools.

We have known grads of big Canadian and American medical schools who turned out to be poor physicians. Some have lost their licenses later in life.

There have been grads of famous North American medical schools who became board certified specialists and have had their licenses revoked.

Failure is blamed on incompetence which is sometimes blamed on poor training. But the fact that other grads of the same schools have succeed raises the question as to whether it was poor training or lack of practical ability to apply the
training. Sometimes it is neither. It is because things have changed in the life of the doctor that have impaired his or her ability to function at a normal level.

On the other hand there are medical schools in the Caribbean that have graduated many fine physicians who are serving their communities well.

The grades a student receives on his or her examination papers (important as they are) can be misleading. Grades do not always give an accurate picture of a future career. Some have the ability get it right on paper but do not do so well in practical work experience. This is because the latter requires dedication, empathy, compassion, good judgment, social graces, practical skills, motivation, and work ethic that are not necessary to succeed in the paper work.

Governments and professional licensing bodies have the responsibility to look closely and approve only those who are qualified. The medical schools, examinations, and degrees are a big part of this. But the powers which be have no way of measuring the unseen qualities. Nor can they see how well an applicant will apply his or her learning in the coming years.

When it is shown that medical schools in one nation are providing inferior training their students should not be able to tranfer their credits. Nor should their grads be accepted for licensing in another country. When we are dealing with the health and lives of our fellow human beings these standards should not be compromised.

      Sincerely,

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

    Congratulations to all.
But when can we expect a change in criteria for the Island Scholarship moving from Cambridge examinations to excellence in the Associate Degree.
This would show true endorsement of the DSC programme by the government.
