A Dominica Grammar School (DGS) Student is the new Junior Tourism Minister.

Crege Laronde topped seven competitors in a debate on the topic: Caribbean Agri-Tourism…there’s more to it than visiting the farms.

The debate took place at the  Tourism Youth Congress 2013 at the Arawak House of Culture on Friday.

Laronde, in his presentation on Caribbean Agri-Tourism, said that he recommends the selling of local crops to establishments on the island to create awareness of locally grown foods.

“As Junior Tourism Minister in Dominica I will recommend to my colleagues that farmers and Agro processors provide hotels and restaurants with local produce and processed goods,” he said.

He pointed out that this will promote “Agri-tourism in a way that it allows the consumer, which is the tourists, to experience the amazing products while on vacation.”

“It also provides a local market for our farmers and links them to tourism,” he stated.

Laronde won a cash prize of $300 and $500 for his School. He will also represent Dominica at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Tourism Youth Congress in Martinique, from October 16 to 18, 2013.

Second place went to Sonita Toussaint of Dominica Seventh Day Adventist Secondary who received an Indian River Tour compliments of Cobra and third place went to Munirih Marie of Convent High School.

She got a Horseback Ride Tour compliments Rainforest Riding.

The other schools which participated are: Dominica Community High School, North East Comprehensive School, Isaiah Thomas Secondary, Wesley High School and Portsmouth Secondary.

The topics during the debate were Multigenerational Travel and Caribbean Agritourism.

Castle Bruce Secondary won the title in 2012 but did not compete this year.

I am always elated when our young men are able to attain such accomplishments. We all know that of late it’s mostly been the young girls who are dominating. Way to go young man! Keep at it!
