Thirteen students on Thursday said farewell to the Dominica Community High School (DCHS).
The school held its school leaving ceremony under the theme ‘Working on our weaknesses is one of our strengths.’
Student of the Year, Madgerie Francis, received awards in nine subjects; Caribbean History, English Language, Geography, Human & Social Biology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Principles of Business, Social Studies and Spanish.
Other subject prize winners were Rubina John who excelled in English Language, Geography, Human and Social Biology and Spanish and Joselyn Jno Baptiste who was awarded for Caribbean History. Keith Harris received awards for Integrated Science, Speech, Drama and Health and Family Life Education, Tania Charles for Principles of Business and Social Studies, Rolston Royer for Agricultural Science and Samuel Joseph for French.
Addressing the ceremony, Ag. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education & Human Resource Development, Marcella Powell,, who spoke on behalf of Education Minister, Petter Saint-Jean, urged the school leavers to draw on the knowledge and skills they had acquired at the DCHS to identify their weaknesses and build on their strengths.
“I am sure that each of you is able to reflect on all that you have learnt in the past five years at the Dominica Community High School which has prepared you to make sounder and wiser decisions as you move forward in your lives. You should now be prepared to take on the rest of your life with confidence and determination,” Powell said.
She noted that in addition to creating access to secondary education for all students, the Ministry of Education is focusing on the implementation of technical and vocational programmes to position students to learn valuable skills necessary for entry into a competitive job market.
Powell said this was part of government’s commitment to ensure that every learner succeeds.
Well Done DCHS! You have done it again! Impressive Ceremony! Great Theme! ‘Working on our weaknesses is one of our strengths.’ Congratulations to the Principal, Staff and Students.
whossss look at my family Marcella Powell.. looking good family
that’s my school. it is the best in Dominica and has taught me alot of discipline which made me who i am today. i remember Ma joe and all my teachers who taught me to be the best i could be. even though i did not pass the Common Entrance Exam i was still given an opportunity to attend High School.
well obviously day started with 30 plus…but along the way students left for all sorts of reasons…at least there was 13 to make their parents proud..so nothing is wrong ok
Congrats student!!
The concern now is why only 13 students? why only 5 boys? Where are the others
thirteen students? I’m i missing something here?

United States Air Force
Congratulations to all the sudents, teachers and to the principal as well. You do not have to be popular to educate and good education is always welcome.
Am only now comprehending the dedication and sincerity Mrs.Nicolas invested into us former and current students. It’s heartbreaking. Thanks ‘Ma Joe’.
I think the principals should be changed every 5 years in a high school. This woman has been there for far too long. The school has not improved one bit. I even forgot that there was a high school in Dominica named community High School No one recognizes this school.
I agree with you Mrs Telemaque. What about a HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. I went to high school in Dominica and when I migrated to the U.S and needed to apply for a job while I was taking my college classes, I was ashame because when thy asked me to show my high school diploma I couldn’t show it. I had a long explanation to give. it is time The Dominica government ensure that a proper HIGH school DIPLOMA given to the children when they leave school. You can say you went to high school, but if you don’t have the diploma to show, they think you are lying. Come on in this day and age!!
Ummm……did you go to high school in stone age? Graduates do get a diploma. Students’ names are engraved on the wooden plaques each year for the highest scholar in various subjects, but it belongs to the school.
I agree with you Observer,. She must have gone to school in the stone age. I graduated and I have a diploma to show to my school in the US. OMG. I am so saddened by these comments
What COCHONEE is that they giving the girl for award there nuh??? In this day and age give something that is worthwhile.. Give a LAPTOP or something of valuable. Not a piece of wood!!!! Come on guys!!
a Laptop!!!! STOP WITH THE IGNORANCE A laptop? What is a laptop. This kid goes down into history. As one of the school top student. Her name will remain on the plaque for one year. If it was convent and SMA you guys would not be saying such bad things. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME
Courage and strength to all. Thanks to Mrs. Nicolas for her insight and perseverance and dedication to my Alma mater DCHS…Connor.
In the article mention is made of the Education Minister by name. However, I am confused by the spelling/pronounciation of his name. Is it Petter or Peter? I think that it is Peter. Do we use Petter knowing that his name is Peter? DNO, you need to find out and let us know. Somehow i get the feeling that we mischievously use Petter.
everybody choose to spell their name however they want the minister of education name is Petter saint- Jean
Congratulations Madge. I knew you could do it. The sky is the limit my dear. Proud of you
congrats make me proud cousin.
Congrats to the class of 2013, wish you all the best. In your future endeavors.

She has really elevated the standard of DCHS, its amazing. I love you Miss still thanking you for the investment you had imparted in my life. You are the best. Woman of dignity ,quality and determination. woman of character and heavenly wisdom. God bless you and as long as God gives you the strength and longevity continue to do an excellent job. After all I am one of your fruits. Proud one too. everything paid off.

Who is PS?
“The school held its school leaving ceremony under the theme ‘Working on our weaknesses is one of our strengths.’”
Are we still into this old term ” School Leaving?” That was a term used in the colonial days when Black people in the Caribbean could not go beyond the seventh standard (grade seven) in the government elementary.
Thus, a seventh standard school leaving certificate was given to students on their last day of school, as proof that they completed elementary school.
These days the word is graduating, be it primary junior, secondary, collage or university!
We hold on to every bit of backwardness, even backward language.
Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
that is one time I agree with you Francisco. “school leaving”
“We hold on to every bit of backwardness, even backward language”. And may I add spelling….I notice you went to a collage not a college.
a : an artistic composition made of various materials (as paper, cloth, or wood) glued on a surface
b : a creative work that resembles such a composition in incorporating various materials or elements
Please note this is not a typo. You do it every time you are referring to the institute of higher education “college”…..
—an independent institution of higher learning offering a course of general studies leading to a bachelor’s degree; also : a university division offering this
— a part of a university offering a specialized group of courses
Well, if you are going to critique me for a misspelt word, which I agree I continuously misspells wrong, I suggest you read back everything you wrote on DNO, and see how many errors of your own will be found by you.
Read as much as you can on every topic, and compare my diction to the rest of the garbage you find, and tell me who’s diction, language, grammar, or English is worst, yours mine, or the others.
You cannot tell me anything about graduation that I do not know because I been through the process four times.; and Secondary School graduation I do not count!
And while you are at it check out the structure of your composition and disclosed the fragmented parts of what you wrote, if you are as smart as you wish to be.
Why pick the mote our of my eye, when you have every opportunity to pluck the mote out of your very own eye.
And there is nothing you can tell me about colleges, and universities, and degrees that I do not know; because “ben there done that.” I have a collection of degrees, which derives not from mediocre disciplines, we are talking about in the field of science such as electronic, and electrical engineering, and even in the liberal arts.
And be reminded I also showed great proficiency in Health Science, and that is why I am able to disseminate an abundance of medical information which is beyond those who does not have the capacity to understand what they read, as a result they accuse me of plagiarism!
So, there is nothing you can say to me; for your information most of the smartest people are not the best spellers; Albert Einstein one of the worlds smartest men in modern times had his problem also, in that he did not know how to lace, or tie his shoe laces okay!
At least, I am not ashamed about anything I do, good or bad, correct, or wrong spelling I still tag my name unto what I produce!
What about you, what is your name?
Okay, I’ll tell you ” phantom in the night” who lives among the creatures of the night.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!
Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
lmao…hehe
What does “School Leaving means?”
You do not count secondary school graduation because you did not have one. Thank God for trade schools and GED in America, every dunce can leave Dominica and go to college in America. Like the old folks say “rolling stone gathers no moss”. Jack of all trade master of none!
Some food for thought…my high school diploma, bachelors, masters and PhD are all in the same field…
congrats to all the students…..Job well done.
CONGRATS FRANCIS… I NKOW U MADE MUMMY PROUD, I CAN JUST PICTURE HER FACE
please the child received awards in ten (10) subjects
