Sixteen young people from Dominica represented the island in August at the 2013 “Quinzaine de la Jeunesse Caribeene,” a two week forum which brings together Caribbean youth.
The 14th annual edition of the event was organised by OMDAC (Organization Martiniquaise pour le Development des Arts et de la Culture). OMDAC is a Martinique based non-profit organization who works in developing art and culture.
There were youth delegations from St. Lucia, St. Kitts, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Guadeloupe, Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The two-week stay consisted of multiple performances and exhibitions in over 10 towns in Martinique displaying Dominica’s culture, crafts, videos, and local products.
The youth, ranging in age from 18 to 26, also got the opportunity to debate in open forum on numerous topics including violence and Caribbean youth, impact of social media and climate change.
For the second week of the program, the delegations were moved to a camp group near the beach in St. Anne’s where they slept in tents and prepared food for themselves.
Delegations celebrated UNESCO International Youth Day on the 12th of August, parading through the streets of Saint Anne’s displaying the countries flags along with presenting their national anthem
Dominica also participated and won the first ever Aqua-Basketball tournament in Martinique where they were rewarded and celebrated
For the young people who attended, the experience was said to be eye-opening, educational and unforgettable.
