Dominican students shine at UWI St. Augustine

Over the past few years, Dominican Students at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus have increasingly gotten involved in campus activities, in the process making a name for themselves individually or as a group and ultimately for Dominica. Each successive year has brought major improvements, whether by increasing membership, participating in more activities or earning more prizes.

Last academic year the association claimed two official prizes, namely Most Improved Association and Most Outstanding Female President. This year, the Association, headed by its Committee, Melvyn Baptiste-President, Keyhan Mendes-Vice President, Mitch Jno-Charles- Treasurer, David Paul-PRO and Nelsha Shillingford-Secretary, again went above and beyond the call of duty and earned Four official prizes, namely Contribution of Service as President and Association President of the Year, both earned by outgoing President Melvyn Baptiste, Winners of the Taste UWI Competition and the long-awaited, well-deserved and coveted title of ‘Island Association of the Year’.

Additionally, individual members shone during the year. Gabrielle Abraham, a first year Double Major in Natural Resource and Environmental Management and Geography participated in and went on to win the First Runner-Up position in the Annual Miss UWIverse pageant. This was the first time that Dominica has had a representative at the pageant and from all reports it was a very tight race. Dominica’s 2011 Calypso Monarch Tasha Peltier proudly represented the Nature Isle and Milner Hall by winning the title of UWI Calypso Monarch 2013/2014.

This is just the tip of the iceberg however, as quite a number of Dominican students are taking on more active roles in UWI Clubs and earning Executive Positions in Groups and Societies of various Disciplines. Below is a list of students who have been elected to various Groups, Societies and Committees:

Keyhan Mendes – Pioneer and President of Young Entrepreneurs Club, Outgoing Assistant Treasurer at Milner Hall.

Nelsha Shillingford – Involvement in numerous Voluntarism Groups

Mitch Jno Charles – Agribusiness Society – Student Research Officer

Gabrielle Abraham – Cultural and Entertainment Representative at Trinity Hall, Zen Committee Member

Nigel Roberts – IVCF (Intervarsity Christian fellowship) – Cell Group Leader for Milner Hall

Vernandra Christian – Catholic Students Movement- Outgoing Milner Hall Representative

Melvyn Richard Baptiste – Member of the Economics Society

Tasha Peltier- Outgoing South Block Rep at Milner hall

Kareem Bertrand – Incoming Treasurer at Milner Hall, Incoming Milner Hall Representative for the Catholic Students Movement (CSM)

Melchizedek Lawrence – Vice Hall Chair at Sir Arthur Lewis Hall, Personal Development Director of Rotaract- Piarco/UWI

The incoming Committee members of DOMSATT for Academic Year 2014/2015 are Nelsha Shillingford-President, Joni Durand-Vice President, Courtney Wilson-Treasurer, Tasha Peltier-PRO and Wynnona Joseph-Secretary. The main visions highlighted by the incoming president is to maintain the coveted title of “Island association of the year” and to further market the Nature Isle in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Association has expressed sincere gratitude to ALL members who assisted in any way for the past year, to all non-members and most importantly to the sponsors and contributors, without whom the accomplishments over the past year would not have been possible.

Dominica has been represented in the past at The Miss Uwiverse Pageant, in 2004 Miss Genora Joseph represented Milner Hall and also won the title of Miss Uwiverse.

i am so proud to be Dominican but its funny how we hear all these news on students at uwi, or in the states but nothing at all on the outstanding achievements of students in Cuba and Venezuela. stop giving the spotlight to one set of students.

Well maybe they should let us know what’s going on with them. DNO doesn’t go travelling the world looking for news. News items get sent to them so stop sipping on all that haterade and go send your info to DNO if you want to get acknowledged .

Wonderful! All intelligent Dominicans. You would not have gotten this far if you were not. All work and no play make Jack/Jill a dull boy/girl. Have fun in the interim. However, keep up the good work, interest and studies. We know you will excel in your studies and take home the degree.
God bless you! Keep safe in T & T.

Excellent guys! But you need to get a proper flag of the Commonwealth of Dominica. Where is the gold that’s suppose to be around the stars?
