Dominican student at the University of Trinidad and Tobago, Shenel Jolly, has been selected to represent Dominica and the entire Caribbean region on a global educational, leadership, and cultural tour which begins on July 15.
The program is organized by Up With People, a non profit organization which provides young adults with an international and intercultural experience that teaches service leadership and uses the performing arts to deliver messages of hope and goodwill throughout the world.
Jolly was born in Belles but has lived in Massacre for most of her life. “I am thrilled to have been accepted and even more anxious and excited to now have the responsibility of representing my country and my region on this world tour as we together seek to bring world peace through global community service, Education, cultural exchange and performance,” she said. “I just want to make my people and my country proud –and my school of course. I call on them all for support!”
Each year hundreds of young men and women between the ages of 17-29 are enrolled as exchange students to participate in the program for a one or two-semester experience that visits diverse communities on a multi-continent tour.
Over 20,000 students have taken part in the program since its inception some four decades ago and many have become leaders in their communities, according to Colleen Eastman, Manager of Enrollment at Up With People. “Equipped with the life skills and broad perspectives learned ‘on the road,’ they have made tremendous differences through a wide variety of diverse career and life choices and have truly become global citizens,” she said.
Eastman said Jolly has “outstandingly met the criteria for acceptance” for the world tour and is pleased she is able to represent Dominica and the entire Caribbean. She said although musical talent and performance ability are welcome, individual selection is based on a personal interview rather than an audition. Important consideration is given to a candidate’s character and maturity, Eastman said.
“We extend our congratulations once again and implore Jolly’s community to enjoin her in her efforts to bring world peace through Education, cultural exchange and performance,” Up With People said in a release.
Jolly is pursuing a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Performing Arts and Education.
I think that the governments of the Caribbean should make a financial contribution towards that world tour as she will be representing the Caribbean region.
