DSC classes pushed back

dominica state collegeStudents of the Dominica State College (DSC) will get an extended summer holiday, as classes have been pushed back to facilitate sewerage works for the new campus.

The new academic year was scheduled to commence on Monday 2nd September, 2013, but the new date Monday 23rd, September, 2013, has been set.

In an interview with state owned DBS radio President of DSC, Donald Peter said “we agreed to open school on 23rd September that is in direct response to issues with the water for the new college.”

He explained further that DOWASCO is currently in the process of laying new pipes for the water supply and that has taken up the entire road. Peters indicated that the project which began on August 12th, , will take four to six weeks before it is actually completed.

However. DOWASCO PRO Ed Registe, is assuring everyone affected by the project that every effort is being made by the contractor and other stakeholders, to minimize inconveniences and to successfully implement the project within the stipulated time frame.

“The project is on schedule and the company will host a meeting with the residents from 5:00 pm today (Thursday) to provide them with necessary updates. The contractor will be there, he can give a better synopsis than I can,” he said.

The new Dominica State College project which is being built by the Shnaghai Construction Company started in October 2011. The DSC will accommodate approximately 2,000 students and will include a food park, a car park and a water supply tank.

It is being funded through a $30 million concessionary loan from the China Export Import Bank (EXIM Bank).

what’s happening? does foolishness reign in this country? 30 million consessionary loans from the chinese and we haven’t put this into good use? education is on a standstill due to sewerage problems? what happened during july? when did the school get to know that they needed a new sewerage upgrade? what u guys need to realise is that though the students may seem happy that their summer vacation is being extended however this will drastically affect the economy of the country. that’s why we’re in a state of stagnation. everything takes a million years to properly execute.

It is strange that the utility work had not been done before the superstructure. The way we do things in Dominica makes me wonder whether we are serious about development. I would bet my last penny that DOWASC is totally responsible for the late start on this utility.

Viva Skerrit for what, you have a $30 million dollar loan to pay, I am just hearing big figure loans from China; no employment on those projects for Dominicans, we not getting anything for taxes and social security, our men and women turning to crime, you still saying Viva Skerrit? When we cannot pay those loans China will have us like Tibet. Hope you will be there to say Vivia Skerrit. No beef with the man but we are seeing he and his team are getting filthy rich and we struggling; and Dominicans are not being employed on these big projects.

When we had the road rehabilitation in the 1980s under the freedom party government although the majority of contractors were foreigners, Dominicans were employed. The road rehab projects now 95% Chinese.

Public Works dead now. We need to keep our eyes open on who is the contractor for the Penville/Blenheim Road. The local contractor in name who is tipped to get the project; Big question whose Company is it? DOMINICANS??????
