DSC re-launches evening programmes

The Dominica State College (DSC), Department of Continuing Education (DCE) has re-launched its evening programmes.

According to the institution this was in response to the wishes of its national stakeholders and has focuses on special short personal and professional empowerment courses.

“We have satisfied many of these needs now so we are now turning to another need which our stakeholders have verbalised,” the college said in a release.

Beginning February 2012, as a new thrust, the DCE will offer Associate Degree in areas such as Business Administration.

A feature of this new thrust, according to the college, is the Associate Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. It said DSC recognises the need to take both practicing and emerging journalists to an operational level comparable to anyone regionally or internationally.

In addition to associate degrees the DCE will offer certificate courses including:

•    Introduction to Political Science by Dr. Donald Peters
•    Speech Communication by Mr. Joel Challenger
•    Introduction to Economics by Mr. Joseph Peltier
•    Quantity Surveying by Mr. Cassanni Laville

The College said it has ensured that each course and programme is Content Relevant, Caribbean Contextualised and very importantly, Cost Competitive. Every programme or course is at least 30% less than any of our national competitors, and in many cases, 50% less than any of our regional and international competitors. Each course will be delivered by experienced facilitators.

Learners aged 21 or over who may not have the formal academic requirements may apply and gain entry on the basis of their prior learning and continuous experience.

Learners are encouraged to take advantage of these personal and professional offers by applying to the Office of Admissions or the DCE.

Going through the comments on this page saddens me. How Dominicans think they know it all and not looking at the bigger picture that is now affecting our society.I know Mr. Peltier personally and he is a very well spoken, educated and devoted man who has worked and travelled all over the caribbean and the world. He cares about his students and his main goal was to prepare them for the outside world of Economics as well as real life. These students at DSC are not prepared for the big transition from High School to College.

    Current student,
you must be he only one in the class that understood, because i know for a fact that the class petitioned to have him removed, i do not expect to be spoon fed none of he lecturers at DSC do that. What we expect is to be taught, and that the lecturer is able to adequately answer questions that he is asked, and not bluff us with tails of his farm and places that he worked at.
i am not interested in personal information but ECONOMIC information

I agree, I left college last year because i had to work so i need to take a few courses. However Mr.Peltier? Is this the same lecturer that the students complained so much about who was teaching economics and the College did not re-hire? What makes him experienced? And is his filed not agriculture? How did he come to teach economics, why not get someone practicing in the field? Jobs for the Boys.
Apart from this its a good move, but more attention need to be paid to experienced facilitators

I totally agree. I am a final year student and his class was a total waste of time, compared to the experienced Mr.Thomas, who knows economics he was a novice. He does not have a clue, power-points with no explanations, copy and paste from the internet.
I am telling you if you attend a class he is teaching you will not learn anything. Now Mr. Herbert Thomas. There is a teacher, praise GOD DSC came to its senses and hired him back

FYI Mr Peltier is a very experienced teacher and do have the qualifications to teach Economics. I did Economics with him last year and I wished I had him again this year. If you sat in his classes you would have heard what he studied and where he have been before. I was surprised to know the number of universities and colleges he taught at already; some of which i hope to attend. He was very good, it was the students who were not participating and taking the work seriously, he gave us all the notes beforehand for all the classes so all they had to do was read and come to class and listen. I know because i sat in the same class with all those children that were complaining about him and trust me it was a mess. They never gave the man a chance, all they did was sit in the back of the class and complained and expected to be spoon fed. This is the real world and college is nothing like high school. !!!!!!!!!
