The Literary and Debating Society of the Dominica State College in collaboration with the HIV/AIDS Response Programme will today hold its first public debate on the topic “The free distribution of condoms in schools will curb the spread of HIV in Dominica.”
Advisor of the Literacy and Debating Society Trudy Christian said the proposing and opposing sides have been preparing for such a big event.
The proposing team comprises Rajiv Wallace, David Paul and Kelda David, while the opposing team is made up of Seraya Jones, Sidney Jules and Keyhan Mendes.
“The topic came up because of a call from the HIV/AIDS Response programme to raise the awareness about the spread of the deadly disease. HIV as well as other Sexually Transmitted Diseases is very pertinent, especially the youth who are sexually active and not know the seriousness of it,” Christian noted.
“We want as many young people as possible to attend and decide exactly what their decision on the matter is,” she added.
The debate is accepted to take place at the Fort Young Hotel from 3 p.m.

STATEMENT BY THE CARIBBEAN TOURISM ORGANIZATION ON UK GOVERNMENT’S ANNOUNCED PLANS TO REFORM APD
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (12 May 2010) – The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) is extremely happy that the matter of the Air Passenger Duty (APD) has been given priority so early in the tenure of the new British government, and that the government is keeping its pre-election promise to reform the tax.
This speaks volumes to us about the importance that the UK government has attached to this issue. It also speaks volumes about the strength of unity of the Caribbean. We made our voices heard and we did what we felt was necessary to bring attention to the matter.
We eagerly await the details of the new system
Against pornography … Im sorry but u are a loser, such prudish nonsense and blinding one’s eyes to the real problems in society is what keeps dominica back.
Is the debate preempting what is already contemplated by some in society? A debate on the devastating effect of pornography on National TV should be given priority.. Why wasn’t a panel discussion organised instead where there would be more varied views on the topic? Of course as I predicted, the best speaker came on the side proposing distribution of condoms in schools to students.
The notion that the students are sexually active is an excuse to introduce condoms to those teenagers. What forced them to be sexually active, wishing for sex anytime or every time one sees a member of the opposite sex. The daily doses and exposure to sexist advertisement and raw sex on TV stimulate the students. The influences of foreign music videos with half naked or naked visuals, lewd lyrics, cripple the students ability to see beauty and true love in their real senses. What is worse is that those artists become the students role models overnight. What do the SOAPS portrait?
Parents have lost control. They find it difficult to manners or discipline their own children so the princes and kings of darkness and pornography now influence and control their children for them. The solution cannot and should not be the random distribution of condoms to our youth. Those trial and error acts will never solve the problem. Dominicans, parents, would you give support to any institution or individuals giving students a license to go and have sex anywhere, anytime and all they have to do is to just use a condom? The choice is yours.
You have hit the nail on it’s head.
There are always people who think they can do better, know better, and are ALL TALK. Put your words into action and go hold a debate yourself. Or better yet, write to the government and write a censorship act to support your cause.
Don’t be a hater or put down others hard work. They got off their seats and spent their own valuable time in preparing, studying, training, and organizing to see what they believed to be a worthy spend of their time. It’s their time. They get to choose the topic.
