Fifteen students to study in Morocco

St. Jean. File photo

Fifteen Dominicans are getting set to move to Morocco in the next week or two to further their education.

The scholarship deal has come as Dominica and Morocco seek to broaden relations, after establishing diplomatic relations in June 2010.

Education minister Petter St. Jean said on Thursday, the Morocco scholarship is just another sign of government’s pledge to educate Dominicans.

“We are ensuring that the government itself initiates these programs with foreign governments to send our young people to attain university education,” he said on radio.

The full scholarships will allow individuals to study in fields such as engineering and medicine.

Locals have been given scholarships to Cuba, China, Serbia, Venezuela and United States among other areas, and government expects to make more scholarships available for Dominicans to study overseas.

Congrats to the government and to the pioneers braving the new scholarship frontier—Education is surely a way out of poverty—-i can surely attest to that , Same negative comments were said of the first entrants to Cuba,Mexico,Venezuela,Serbia,Russia, etc, etc….Studying in the Usa is many $$$$$ and the %rate of return is less than the other above-mentioned countries –so i say go for it, what you learn cannot be erased and the new experience is always useful….Hey just Google and all info on Morocco available –,All scholarships from any country should be accepted–the Government just have to ENSURE that all aspects re appropriate study conditions are in order. Can you imaging no STUDENT loan to repay and you have a degree etc ,

I do hope that the government of Dominica take care of the student that they send so far,and don’t forget them like the ones in Cuba.that have to be begging for the little money they have to send for them.it is all fine and dandy to send people children for an education ,but to send them far and forget about them is another thing,

why do they always get to send them in some forsaken place, but again when the government send them to NY,they never comes back.so by sending them in them difficult countries they must come back.idea smarter or crazier and the government and their cabinet people never sending their own children these kinder of countries.
take for instant the counsel general in NY that lady would turn UWP before she make her daughter go to any of those countries.so why are they subjecting or kids to these countries. anyway good luck and come back safe in the name of the lord.

Marrakesh and Casablanca are beautiful cities. I learn t about Morocco when i was very young, I have always dream t of seeing this land, with it’s beautiful people and desserts. Africa is the mother of Morocco. Our people will be fine over there, they are in no more danger than they are in crime infested places like Trinidad and Jamaica. They have to remember that they are not home and that certain customs are different. I am sure that they will be adequately briefed. If they fail it will be because of them. I wish them much success and God’s speed, Stay focused and stay safe.

one of the reason that Dominica stays behind is because of our small mindedness, When Jesus came he did go the the good, he went directly to the sinners, the disciples were all sinners, I am sure hat some of you on this panel are christians, stop being so negative, let us pray that these students succeed in their studies and that God guide and protect then, that they excel in all their hard work, may God bless our mind, hearts and lips, that we spread LOVE with each person we meet, instead of being judgemental : :-D

Not a good place to send students at this time in history. They are not going to better themselves over there, though they may get a taste of what real instability and turmoil are like and then consider themselves lucky if they can make it back home.

These Arab Muslim countries like Morocco are very volatile and dangesous. Their Islamic way of life is another major problem with the Sharia Law.i do not think that our govermnent should ask or send young people to study there; it is not safe for students.

    • Muslim_Always
      February 4, 2011

Why do you hate sharia so much? Have you ever looked into Islam from its sources? Let’s be objective and give our students a chance to better themselves. I hope and pray this opportunity bridges the gap between Dominica and Islam in sha Allah (God’s willing).

    February 4, 2011

To those questioning the Morocco scholarship, this is a 1997 INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS SPEECH from Mr. Edison Chenfil James PM of Dominica; lets see what he thinks about that part of the World.

“I am pleased to inform you that on Friday last week we concluded an agreement with the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development in the sum of EC$12 million towards the construction of the Greater Roseau Water and Sewerage Project”

Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development??!! Should we have asked why Kuwaiti; to my knowledge we are not Muslims or Arabs.

Democracy loving Edison James on Cuban scholarship, the same speech.

“Cuban scholarships, which were always available to Dominica through official channels over the past 15 years, but rejected on spurious grounds, are now accepted, and there are some 100 students currently studying in Cuba in a variety of fields including engineering, medicine and architecture.”

“was rejected on spurious grounds and now accepted” what does spurious mean? DICTIONARY Definition – different from what it is claimed to be, not authentic, or not valid or well-founded.

So Mr. James is saying he can see no reason for not taking scholarships from Cuba, guess they became Communist after DLP came to power.

Dumbo Brown do you know the larger picture of the refugees of Western Sahara? Do you know that Rosie Douglas did to preserve these people dignity band supported them because of the atrocities committed to them by Morocco. Skerrit does not care about that he pulled the rug under them. Rosie would have never done that…… Morocco used Skerrit to get votes on the Hugh issue of the refgee problem and their human right abuses against the poor people of the Western Sahara.
…Go read your book instead of writing here like a stupid goat.

      • John Brown
        February 5, 2011

Rosie is dead, he is not a political threat so it’s ok to sing his praise.
Wise Sheep, did you give him his flowers when he was alive?

Did the UWP pull the rug under the Cuban people by taking Cuban scholarship and having diplomatic ties with them?
Did they pull the rug under Kuwaiti women by taking money from a government that treat it’s women as inferior second-class citizens and at the time would not let them vote?

Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast The First Stone.

Well, 15 is better than nothing. But Mr. Minister that’s a ‘drop in the bucket’ when you consider the Thousands of students that have left College over the past couple of years alone. You shouldn’t pat yourself on the back for this. At this rate the goal of “1 University graduate per household” may be realized by the year ….am, 3011? The point is: More should be done!

Clearly this person either is clinically insane or has a serious problem to be making such negative comments about young Dominicans getting a chance to further their education. It’s very unfortunate that we have such negative persons leaving on the island. How are we expected to move forward as a country when we have persons who continue to bring down their fellow Dominicans.

But other than that , i wish the students good luck and make the best of the opportunity granted to them.

Good looks on the Government side of things for presenting this opportunity….

i happy dominicans going abroad to study but morrocco of all places what the hell is the govermnment thinking cuba venezuela serbia now morocco whats the hell man u sending students and study in countries that will have them blacklisted on the international scene and also to get a qualification that nobody goign to recodnise the government or whoever that makign those scholoship deals just insisting on bringing dominica and dominicans backwards why not get scholoships to the us canada england france germany barbados trinidad sweeden and those countries what the hell man slowly and surely bringing dominica backwards and deeper into being a 4th world country

    • Reproach
      February 4, 2011

As if ppl cannot decide for themselves if they want to be blacklisted or not,lol

I don’t support your point, nobody ties those students hand and feet and drag them all the way to morrocco, you research on the country you find out what the system is like and you decide. so before you talk like that, try not to make the students feel stupid (that they can’t think for themselves).

By the way, it doesn’t matter where you go, it’s all about how much you value the opportunity you have been given and how much you a willing to make the best of it inspite of the conditions that i’m assuming they researched about.

      • Dominicaness
        February 4, 2011

I totally agree with what you say reproach. the students that are going to apply for the scholoar ship, i assumed like you said that they will research on the country before signing up…afterall.

how they can get a qualification that nobody going to recognize…so wait….in that case what is the point they go and study…..you will say a think like that because Dominica dont have jobs available in the field that such individual get a degree in however i know for sure that they can surely accomplish something good elsewhere…

        Think before you type………nuff resspect

        February 4, 2011

where u go matters alot u think any of those students have a chance to move to england or even canada and work one look at a morroco degree and they sending them right back to school and do the same thing over again peopel just sit in dominica and believe a degree is a degree the level u are trained at means alot and in morrocco they are not tought to any levels at all im based in england and we get that all the time they are trained in a degree in some random country and when u put them to work they dont know what the hell they doing plus schools overthere are not even recodnised

Agree with you 100%, since there are not too many employment opportunities in DA,upon completion of their degrees will they be staying in Morocco and searching for employment. going to Morocco to study is a waste of time, whatever document they obtain at the end of their study will useless, Moroccans migrating to France and other countries, upon arrival they have to do an Assessment of their Degree/PhD, or whatever educational documents they have before they can work, since it is not recognized out there, that degree will be nothing other than a High School Diploma in the UK, Canada, the USA and some other countries, also i do hope that the boys parents talk to them before their departure to Morocco, and the girls have to be prepare to cover up, Mr Skerrit and the minister of education i do hope that you and your cabinet members did your research, Morocco is not a safe place for Moroccan far less for our people, sending these students to this part of the world where women are treated like dirt and door mats, is not a good thing, ( Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted and they will be loser, they will have a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers. Qur’an, 3:91) just wondering if all 15 are Muslim

We need to open up more job opportunities Mr minister. When we return from studies and there are no vacancies what shall we do? February 4, 2011

Chavez you wrong about that one, even if you are educated doesn’t mean you are guaranteed a job, its’ like getting a drivers’ license doesn’t mean you will get a car.

Once you are educated the onus is on you to be creative, do something to gain some income, don’t do like persons i know who studied agriculture, but refuses to work the many acres of land in their possesion.

You think if you have a Degree with no experience a foriegn investor will make you head of their enterprise?? Look at the develope countries for example… You go to a gas station and the gas attendant there will tell you they graduated with a degree but got to do what they have to do to pay the bills…. aint nobody owe you a job…

Foriegn investors in the caribbean have crippled our people, take st.lucia as an eg since the conversion of their economy to mass tourism more slumps, poverty and crime is evident.. I suggest you get in touch with Matt ask him for the video “Jamaica for Sale” it will reveal all these false impression of the good Foriegn investors bring to us!!

Best advise go and learn get your degrees and come back home and invest your time in a small business with your newly acquired skill and knowledge you can grow it into a multi-million dollar enterprise!!!!

Good luck to all the students…….

    Congrats students,

I wish you all a safe journey and trust that you will remain focused! It will be difficult, you will meet challenges but the important thing to remember is that every success comes with challenge and that you can overcome them all!

Remember to pray and ask God (jah..whichever way you choose to call him) to help you, protect you, open your minds that you will learn and understand! Be careful which friends you choose and where you go. Ensure that studying is your PRIORITY and not fete and lavie bon temp!

Then always be grateful for the opportunity and return to help build and develop Dominica!
