Former DOMLEC scholarship recipient McNeil Moses is currently on attachment with the company after completing his first year of tertiary education at the Dominica State College.
The freshman architecture student was offered an internship by the DOMLEC’s Human Resource and Administration Department, which administers the the light and power company’s scholarship program.
Head of the department Bertilia McKenzie said that it does not only just dish out scholarships but that it tries to play an integral role in the education and lives of the students.
Moses said, of the opportunity to have been a DOMLEC scholar, “It has been a wonderful experience. I got the opportunity to attend high school knowing that I had a scholarship, meaning that my textbooks and my allowances were taken care of. So as DOMLEC gave to me, I tried my best to give back to them and to myself at the CXC’s. I got four ones and three twos but I knew I could have done better.”
He believes that the internship has afforded him insight into the real working world and that he will be better off because of it.
He stated, “They are training me to get into the working world, to do assignments and hand them in on time and to develop and shape my skills. I’m on attachment so I help out in any way that I can, filing, typing documents, making copies. They are training me for the future so it’s all to better myself. What I’d suggest to young people is to send in your applications for next year, so that one day you can be in my position.”
DOMLEC recently awarded four more scholarships to students entering high school this September, bringing the total of current DOMLEC scholars to 21 in the program’s 25th year of existence.
