Pierre Charles Secondary, St. Luke’s Primary cop Principal of Excellence Award for 2011

The Principal of the Pierre Charles Secondary School Shirley Samuel has been named the country’s Secondary Schools Principal of Excellence for 2011.

Mrs. Samuel received her award at a ceremony this morning to recognize excellent principals in Dominica.

Sister Anita Peter of the St Luke’s Primary was awarded Principal of Excellence Awards for primary schools.

Meantime Education Minister Peter St. Jean says in order for children to excel and a school to do well, there must be a good principal at the helm.

“The government has taken a conscious decision to provide the necessary support services to all our schools. We believe that every child must be given the opportunity to excel and that quality education is not a privilege but a right of every Dominican child,” he said.

Meantime St Jean said Cabinet has approved the Education Regulations Act which should take effect in the new school term.

Chief Education Officer Steve Hyacinth congratulated the principals, stating that they are essential to the overall development of the school.

No it is not Shirley Bruney. Congrats Mrs Samuel and Sis Peters. The Ministry of Education got these ones right as well as all the awards. Congrats to the program organisers and the students who perform. It was surreal. The level of talent these students displayed in song, dance is unbelievable. Hats off the Simeon Joseph and Mrs Brumant. Well done guys

At least seven of those principals are not eligible for gratuity or pension from the STATE because they are termed Religious schools, simply assisted somewhat by Govt. That is certainly NOT FAIR. Whose children do those teachers teach and care for? Imagine some teachers in those schools giving their all, their dedicated services for years, 20, 30, 40 years. Those schools excel all the time and are the top schools both in academics and in the social/cultural field, yet after all those years of service, the teachers will GET NO PENSION, NO GRATUITY FROM THE STATE. is that FAIR? Our School Principals and Teachers, in general, must be better remunerated for their invaluable work. The TEACHERS of ‘PARTLY ASSISTED SCHOOLS’ must be rewarded with their FAIR SHARE of compensation after years of teaching, molding, caring for our youth. They too need their PENSION/GRATUITY from the STATE’S TREASURY.

How pleasing it would be if all or most of the persons who graduated from those religious schools including those who now are in positions of influence would let their voices be heard on that issue. WE ALL should give back to our teachers and our schools by advocating NOW for and supporting more SUSTAINABLE REWARDS of A PENSION/GRATUITY. Such a policy and action by GOVT. would ensure that our hard working Principals and teachers in those ‘Partly assisted schools’ enjoy a better standard of living during their RETIREMENT.

But they knew this when they chose to work at the insititutions. How can it be unfair? when you accept employement you need to read and understand the contract your signing. These schools recieve government assistance and you should take your gripe up with the insitutions which are all private, not blame government. They are not the problem of the government toneh. So if Royal Bank doesn’t do the same, or Scotia, or Astaphans government must in turn give their employees those benefits? Gratuity is not a gift neither pension, government employees contribute to this as the years go along and then the government adds a little something.

You need to be less emotional and more rational. This is a matter for the concerned parties and the establishments they work for not government

  17. Yard stick???
    April 20, 2011

Pierre Charles Secondary School & St Luke’s Primary – congrats all the way. Congrats due also to NECS on the sports award.

What yard stick was used to determine the best sports school? PSS beat NECS in 15 events and NECS beat PSS in 10 events for the year 2010 according to a document circulated by the Sports Division.

NECS did not take part in U17 Football and PSS emerged Champs; they did not take part in under 20 Table Tennis and PSS emerged Champs; they did not register for under 20 Football girls and PSS registered. If Sports Division had organized a Tournament PSS would have emerged Champs or 2nd.
On the other hand PSS did not take part in under 15 Basketball and NECS reached semifinals; PSS did not take part in under 20 boys Football and NECS emerged 5th; PSS did not take part in under 20 Volleyball and NECS emerged 2nd.

Tell us Sports Division – how did you arrive at the decision. Sports School in 2010-PSS OR NECS???

    • Sout Man
      April 20, 2011

Let me admit up front that I do not have the stats and I hate to jump to conclusions. Sports Department ( I don’t like Division_ have their own criteria. But let’s view one scenario. In the 25 events you alluded to, PSS could have had a decline from 23 victories to 2 losses the previous year to 15 vs 10 this year. That would represent a 500% increase for Necs and a 34.7% decline for PCSS. It’s like the most improved player in the NBA.

    • Cudos to all winners and nominess
      April 22, 2011

Well every institution has its criteria. However, I remember a few weeks ago, there was some discussion on some selected netballers and no one was from PSS. Later, it was revealed that the children never came to training thus having the officials to ‘settle’ for a ‘weaker’ team… although congrats to the girls who represented… hope next tournament will be better.

This is a big indictment on the school already…. you cannot be called for national training and refuse to do this for trivial reasons. I mean, transportation costs were being met and it was not like there were too many days of training in the week.. I believe more should have been done by the school to get the children out. Maybe on the other hand, NECS children made a better effort and were more willing to take part in the Sports Division’s activities. Winning the award cannot be because of winning competitions alone….if you know what I mean.

Anyway, this is done and over with now. What has to be done is a redoubling of efforts and not to poison the children minds. We know some of us as adults, we are king and queens of discord and disunity….we will say.. “Is so they are.. voleh they voleh” to young tender minds…. minds which have been hearing so many foolish and negatives statements already. Sports Teachers, ordinary teachers and others… do not do this to our young ones. In sports, we teach the “Referee’s decision is final” ..too many times we are not guided accordingly.

It might be remiss of me to say this now… but I am kind of glad it was not a school from Roseau that won..because I know there would be more ‘whoooplah” talking about “dem Roseau people”.

Let’s move forward…..got to take our youths and Dominica to a ‘another level’ in mind and undoubtedly, action will follow.

Be positive all.. and let’s all support each other… there is another day.. another year… another time.
