Marigot schools to be merged

Students from Marigot will soon share the same facilities as the Ministry of Education moves to merge the Marigot Jr. and Wills Strathmore Stevens Schools for the upcoming school year to open in a weeks’ time.

The two schools will be joined in the Stevens building.

Education officials say the move is part of an initiative to improve not only the facilities available to the children, but also their curriculum.

A curriculum review will take place over time and improvements will be made accordingly.

This initiative is part of a series of efforts by the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development to amplify the standards of education available to the Dominican youth.

I thought a large community as Marigot would have enough children to populate the two schools?

As long as a school bus is provided for the children, I have no problems with that move if the access to better facilities will give the children an enhanced learning experience.

@From the area: dont you listen to the news and media.

how much more can the parl rep speak about a bus for marigot…we must get our facts straight in dominica when you speak, and not just say things for saying sake….

MARIGOT IS NOT LIKED BY THIS PRESENT SKERRIT RULED LABOUR GOVERNMENT THATS THE TRUTH BUT THE WHOLE TRUTH..

Their is a Storm Drain thats its of major concern running through the Samuel’s in Marigot,he came Their in Jan or Feb of 08,the Prime Minister saw it with his God given two eyes up till now did absoultey nothing…these retired persons have served with distinction for their island, retired Primary School Principals, home care takers etc residing..in that vicinity.

The Valley road, overgutter.cayne boke road to name name a few he toured the village that day had meetings with the MDC. etc…look at the fisheries complex mdc want it the completely came up with a negative element that wasnt suitable for them..so its the fact once its Marigot nothing happens…

Look at the Hospital if he cared about Marigot the airport project was started in 04,no upgrade of the hospital, well its in Marigot…

Good to know that ECCA came down severly on them for lack of search and rescure aspects and they have to show major improvements to that area,,,,its marigot so it not cared for by this govt!

Too much top spin on the ball will not hit the wicket skero..just keep on line and length at you will eventualy hit the stumps,,,but sadly everything to your surport base is just pure spin and 2 cents of poor vision…which bear no fruit..and your base keeps waiting wonder how long will they wait for you have to remember nothing last for ever!! you just a ordinary citizen of Dominica and its your time! so enjoy spining hope its doesnt spin back with a lash to your forehead!!

First of all i really find that criticizing should be a part of life the only thing however, in dominica the problem is most of the people are only quick to criticize in a negative way! There are other comments that could be made like; The other Teachers will there be other jobs for them, the other building which is being vacated what will it be used for,u could come up with the rest. I as a dominican thinking neutral thinks that this move has alot of positives in it.This brings more competion within the schools in terms of education and sports and all other talents associated with that school.Beleive it or not the population of a school and the effectiveness of the teachers makes a school very competitive! Just don’t forget to block the holes that were left behind (the Teachers and the building)

What a dumb reason for merging the schools. “curriculum Improvement” How dumb doe these people think we are. can’t they be honest for once. What they should have said was “The school population is too small so it is more efficient to merge the schools. due to the high levels of emigration due to the lack of opportunity on the island families have been leave a mass causing serious dips in the number of students. Therefore some schools have become irrelevant.”

I’ve never supported this government, but now I must admit they’re taking a lot of common sense and pragmatic approaches as it relates to domestic affairs. I’m giving credit when it is due.

Merging the schools are are great idea, the population is too small to have two schools with different curriculum.

@REALLY??? – With respect to the possible benefits, it would streamline the curriculum, cost cutting, and a more uniformed system. In terms of how it will affect the teachers ?. You dismiss the teachers that are underperforming and keep the ones that are great.

Driving in that area during school times to and from school, I notice that allot of the students are walking from Melville Hall, Sams Gutter, by the Fisheries Complex areas and other parts of Marigot to school and have to stop vehicles passing by for a ride to school. I trust that with the amlagamation of those two schools provision are in place to provide and least one school bus to safely transport those students to school. I would believe the the Parl Rep would definitely look into this. If transportation is not provided there will allot of students arriving late at school or some might not even bother because it is too far. Marigot is one of the largest Villages on the Island.

which school has the highest population? What benefits will the merger have? How will it affect the teachers?

These are questions which needs to be answered so that parents can understand what is going on.
    Utter nonsense

Great move – I only hope that all the teacher’s jobs are retained.

This should be done in Campbell, Mahaut and Warner! The population is extremely small in Campbell and Warner and Mahaut already has the infrasstructure in place.

It would be better to send a school bus for the kids and place them in Mahaut!
