The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development on Tuesday began a four-day workshop to develop programs of study and curriculum guides for secondary schools.
Secondary school teachers are participating in the workshop, facilitated by Dr. Jeffrey Orr of Edu Nova, a Canadian based education consulting firm.
Teachers are being coached on setting objectives and attainment targets and developing formats for programs of study and curriculum guides. They are also assessing the current status of existing programs and guides within the National Curriculum Framework, and sharing examples that will guide the curriculum writing process.
Senior Education Officer, Curriculum, Measurement and Evaluation, Nicholas Goldberg, said in the development of new curricula, teachers must be involved in the process.
“It is going to be much clearer in terms of what teachers are teaching. It is not going to be dependent solely on textbooks. Much more important is what we want as a nation to be taught in the classrooms,” Goldberg said.
“The teachers are now being empowered to develop curricula and we will make sure that they are also more likely to deliver the curricula in the way they are supposed to,” he added.
Goldberg said the Ministry will develop curricula for subject areas including Agriculture, Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education and Sports and review existing guides for English, Mathematics and Social Sciences.
The review of the national curriculum is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
The National Curriculum outlines the program of study that students are to follow in the various subject areas offered. Edu Nova is assisting the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development in revising its National Curriculum Framework and developing a program of study and curriculum guides for selected subjects at secondary school level.
The consultation is funded under the Dominica Education Enhancement Project (DEEP).
i totally agree,”what a group”
these so called educators are just spinning top in mud and clearly wasting our children time. what a group . they are just very educated in wasting tax payers money
I truly don’t understand this comment. Would you prefer the education system were shut down? Why don’t you become an educator, go into all the schools and teach every child yourself?
There are some very good teachers in the school system and it is very disheartening when citizens make these comments while hundreds of students are in fact being educated every day.
Mind boggling.
