The National Cooperative Credit Union (NCCU) has added 12 more students to those benefiting from its annual scholarships to attend secondary school.
The scholarship program is into its third year and this year’s awards bring to 55, the total number of scholarships given so far.
President of the NCCU, Michael Augustine, said a significant amount of cash has been pumped into the program over the three year period.
“For the 2012/13 academic year, expense for the NCCU scholarship program totalled $74,084.04, which included payments for a monthly allowance, text book purchase and supplies, school fees inclusive of payments of CXC at the 5th form level, and the competence exam at the 3rd form level and a uniform allowance,” he said.
According to Augustine, the secondary school scholarship includes a provision of text book supplies to a maximum of $700, an annual uniform allowance of $400 per students, payment of school fees ranging from $20 to $525, provision of monthly transportation allowance ranging from $50-$100 per student where applicable and payment of CSEC school fees for students based on the recommendation of the school.
He said for the Dominica State College, the NCCU provides tuition of $1,000 per student per academic year with books and stationary totaling $600 and transportation, $500.
“In addition to the scholarships, the NCCU also assist families on behalf of students both for members and non members, by providing text books and supplies from our existing stocks,” he said.
Meantime Chief Executive Officer of the NCCU Ltd Aylmer Irish told students to make good on the scholarships being awarded.
“In a time when the distractions are endless and resources are limited, you must make best use of the opportunities afforded to you. Out of 119, who applied you were selected. I encourage you to study hard, make your parents and communities proud and bring satisfaction of members of NCCC whose funds were invested in your education,” he noted.
Augustine said the institution remains committed towards the advancement of youth on island.

@Da2debone I totally agree what happen to the northeast students and the other parts of Dominica? Do they not qualify for scholarships based on merit or need? That is so unfair ! The NCCU better go back to the drawing board to balance it off.
So what happen to the children on the northeast are they not qualify for a scholarship from NCCU?
The northeast credit unions are not part of the NCCU family. If you read well you will see that the recipients all come from NCCU member Communities. They are giving back to their members. I applaud that..Way to go.
This is the first clear picture that I have seen in a long time.
Happy for Aaliyah & Milagro. Work hard because I know you can make it. Don’t waste your scholarships. I was one and I felt great to have it.
Wonderful work Dominica National Credit Union pushing our youth to greater heights, higher standards and a more prosperous way of life .I hope all the students work diligently and appreciate their good fortune.
I am very to be a long standing member of the Roseau Credit Union since my primary school days.
Congratulations to all.
