The North East Comprehensive Secondary School (NECS) celebrated History Week 2016, under the theme “Building Communities: 1838- 1938”.
The highlight of the week on Friday 14th October was “History Day” organized by the Social Science Department. As part of the day’s celebration, students and teachers were encouraged to wear Creole, Kalinago or African attire.
The day began with a special assembly featuring cultural songs, the National Prayer, National Anthem and the National Pledge. This was followed by special presentations by the Third and Fourth Form History classes. It was a pleasure to watch Darry Dalcine an NECS student of Haitian heritage perform the song ‘Africa’ composed by History teacher Mr. Nathaniel John. In addition, the Third Form students reminded us of the villages in Dominica which bear Kalinago names.
We were a bit disappointed when Chief Charles Williams who was scheduled to do a presentation on “The History of the Kalinago” called to say that he had an emergency and was unable to be present. However, the day progressed nicely. Boys from Forms One and Two put on a melodious drumming recital.
Following this, Mr. Emmanuel Prince of Wesley, a master of the Cocoy Language and a cultural icon of the North East, enthralled the staff and students with a delightful presentation of Cocoy stories.
Then, it was the energetic Dr. Irvin Pascal who demonstrated that his gifts are not limited to the medical profession. Prior to his presentation we would have said that he was from the community of Marigot but, he informed us that he is from the continent of Africa; we respect that. Dr. Pascal lectured the Third and Fourth Form History students on “The Importance of History in Schools”.
The final presentation was done by, Mr. Gregory Rabess -cultural activist, poet, singer, musician and the main organizer of National History Week 2016. He enlightened students on how communities were established all across Dominica during the period 1838-1938. No one could have done this presentation with the charisma and style that he did.
The day ended with a quiz competition among teams of students from forms One and Two. Form 2-1, represented by Keeshana Thomas and Dadrick Gordon, emerged champion.
The overall aim of the celebrations was to promote students’ interest in the study of History and create a greater awareness of the important relationship between our history and culture, particularly during this season of Independence. The day’s activity was a tremendous success.
On behalf of the students and Staff of the North East Comprehensive, the Head of the Social Science department Mrs. Sabina James-Thomas expresses sincere thanks to all who contributed to History Week 2016. We look forward to your support as we continue to celebrate Heritage month.
why does the school have to put that story on DNO. Thats not a story for DNO. Taking peoples children time. Go and teach and stop celebrate,
May I just say….Hater alert… You don’t even know how hard them teachers at N.E.C.S work to teach us
Commendation to the Social Studies Department ..It was indeed a day well planned and well spent. We are right on track NECS. Keep up the good work. Very hard working teachers.. and a very lovely place. We will turn our vision of making this school a Model of Excellence on the island a reality.. with God’s help we will.
Good going! Congrats to my girl Sabina.
Why does DNO have to show the school with all those broken windows? The school has been renovated, don’t be divisive in all your ways because you guys are Workers. That’s not nice.
