Non-profit group raises funds for sports facility

The Big Brothers and Sisters of St. Mark (BBSS), a non-profit group established to effect positive change in the communities of Soufriere, Scotts Head and Gallion, will hosting an Oldie Goldies Dance on the Friday September 2, 2011, as part of a fundraising drive.

The drive is in an effort to furnish one of the communities with a Multipurpose Hard Court to afford the youth of the parish a place to adequately express themselves through sport. This is in hopes that sports will foster discipline and further improve the sense of community within the parish.

BBSS has been operational since January of 2007 and exists with the main aim to provide and develop social, educational, cultural, recreational and spiritual activities for the benefit of the youths. Numerous other projects have already been set up in an attempt to meet those goals, including Homework Assistance Program, Summer Camps, Computer Classes, Stop The Violence Sports Campaign and Painting of a bus stop in the area.

With the assistance of an EU funded project, The Dominica Social Investment Fund the group has been able to recently complete a resource center which includes a computer room and library. Also with the help of Lime Dominica we are able to provide internet access for the youth of the community.

The fundraising effort will feature music by DJ Skea and be held at ‘The Carabantic’ in Scott’s Head from 10 pm. Admission is but $10 and tickets can be purchased from the Village Council Office and Leanne Tavernier in Soufriere or from Garvin Detouche and Marvin Andrew in Scott’s Head

Presently, BBSS is made up of seventeen members between the ages of 16 and 35.

  1. DE CARIBBEAN CHANGE,
    September 1, 2011

Great job guys in my village community. I feel proud of you guys. I can only hope also that the Dominica Social Investment Fund generously provided financial support in the expanding and upgrading of the Brooklyn Playing Field in Soufriere as well as building a washing facility there and a dressing room for spectators and players. Keeping the BayFronts clean and tidy in both villages is key also to great progress and development. Keeping the streets in Scotts-Head, Soufriere, and Gallion, clean and tidy are just as important as well. Beautifying your homes and tending to the front yards and backyards are fundamental as well. Hopefully, de caribbean change will make a financial contribution soon. Keep it up guys.
