O’Neil Le Blanc sets eyes on civil engineering

16-year-old Trafalgar resident, O’Neil Le Blanc of the St. Mary’s Academy (SMA), was “pleasantly surprised” when he got the news that he had earned 11 grade ones at this year’s CSEC Examinations.

Le Blanc said he is thankful and very proud of this achievement and he hopes to become a civil engineer.

“I am very elated, very happy right now and also very thankful to God and my parents and family and friends … they all helped me along the way and pushed me to study so I am very happy,” he said.

Leblanc, who enjoys listening to music, singing, reading, swimming and Karate, wants to become architect first, then a civil engineer, since according to him the unemployment levels of architects are very high.

“Recently I learnt that the unemployment rate in architecture is very high compared to civil engineering, so I would also like to do civil engineering in the future,” he pointed out.

The young man said he prepared for the exams by studying a lot and doing a lot of past papers. “My friends, family and teachers pushed me a lot,” he said.

Getting ready to take the exams was almost like a family affair with Le Blanc’s father assisting him with mathematics and physics and his sister, with English and Literature. “So when I had problems with something, I go to them and the teachers around SMA would help me whenever I needed them,” he said.

Alex Maree Roberts, from the Convent High School, received 10 grade ones and a grade two.

What I like most about this young man is his apparent humility: giving so many people credit for helping him achieve this level of success is just pleasant to my heart. I believe there is nothing more humbling than pursuing knowledge: A hammer is a tool used by a carpenter, a spanner is a tool used by a mechanic, mathematics is a tool used to solve problems. The more knowledge you gain is the more you begin to realize how much you do not know, and therefore how much more you have to learn.

With this level of (my observation) his humility, I am confident he will be willing to accept criticism which will make him an even more powerful student.

Learn from every opportunity available to you. Everyone has something to offer: take the good; the bad, try to understand it so you do not fall victim to it.

Please stay on this right path. I am a teacher in the USA, but I am a proud bread and buttered Dominican. I always tell parents, these children are yours. There are 24 hours in a day, and a teacher have your child about 5-7 hours the most. The balance of the hours, is the parents responsibility to make sure their child is eating, sleeping, studying etc.

It is not the government or the teachers full responsibility. I always tell them it takes a village to raise a child, but it is the parent/parents duty to see the child works to the best of their ability. As with everything in life, some people are in certain jobs, not for the love of the job, buy MONEY. I know what I am talking about. I have other brothers and sisters that were teachers, and some just did it for the money and all the vacation. Eventually all of them are doing the jobs the really love.

Young man, the sky is the limit. Do not let any negative person/people try to derail or say you cannot do it. KEEP ON, KEEPING ON. DON’T GIVE UP WITH GOD AS YOUR FOUNDATION. Other young people, I hope you all do the same. NEVER GIVE UP.

Congratulations O’Neil. Hard work in studies does pay off. Also a little help from others, as you mentioned your family and teacher, certainly helped you. Being ambitious, you will keep at it and excel higher. Good luck in your future endeavors.

I am confused as to why you have in two stories omitted the PCSS students who scored the same grades as Alex Maree.

      August 15, 2013

It’s easy, if the passing rate for an A is 95%. If Alex-Maree scored 99% and PCSS scored 98%. who do you believe is the top? Use your brains my people. Every year is the same explanation the Ministry of Education has to give.

Oh boy! Why did you state that? Everyone does not possess the identical intellect. Where one excels, the other may not and vice versa. This is the way the ball rolls. However, God gave everyone a certain degree of intelligence, suited to them for their state in life.
