A 10-year-old grade five student from Paix Bouche is the winner of the 2013 Kwéyòl Spelling Bee Competition.

Nyrah Remy outshone her nine other competitors at the Arawak House of Culture on Wednesday.

“I feel very excited and happy … I had to go to the principal every afternoon to learn my words,” an elated Remy told DNO.

Remy received a Tablet from Digicel, a Participation plaque, a gift bag and $200.

Her School also received a winning plaque for the second time and EC$100.

Second runner-up position went to Anisha Williams from Delices Primary School who received EC$150, a participation plaque, gift bag and a phone form Digicel.

Third runner-up is Erlanda Jean from Mahaut Primary School. She received a participation plaque, gift bag, and EC$100 and a phone from Digicel.

All other participants received 50, a participation plaque, and a gift bag.

They are: Julia Cyrille from Atkinson Primary school, Nichole Vigilante Castle Bruce Primary, Rebecca George from Colihaut Primary, Serena Alexander from Convent Prep, Delbert Defoe form Roseau SDA, Alebfair Matthew from Tete Morne Primary and Christina Thomas from Thibaud Primary.

Principal of the Paix Bouche Primary School, Cynthia Joseph, said winning the competition was a proud moment for her school.

“I am very happy that she made it and made us proud again. Last year we won it this year again I am very happy we won,” she said.

She said the school has been preparing for a long time for the competition. “We’ve been preparing her for how many weeks …the fact that she (Remy) was very interested I never had to call her she would come to me every day … she was quite interested in learning her words. When I heard that a tablet was the gift I told her to work very hard so she can get it for her birthday.”

Meantime Spelling Bee Co coordinator Charlene White-Christian said that the competition was one of the ways in keeping the Creole language alive.

“The competition went very well,” she stated. “We try our best to ensure that the Creole language survives in Dominica and that’s one of the ways that we could do that. This year we felt that the students were very well prepared and the competition as you saw we went into two tie breakers, so we felt that the schools are really on board with us.”

There were preliminary rounds held in the different districts and the winners of these competitions were those competing in the final round.

The competition is in its third year and is made possible through the Division of Culture, The National Cultural Council and the Komite Pou Etid Kwéyòl (KEK) and other sponsors.

Congratulations to Nyra Remeh. Your smile tells it all and how elated you are to be the winner of the Kweyol Spelling Bee Competition.
Congratulations to the runner ups. Those of you who were not successful, consider that everyone cannot win and there is only one winner as in everything else. However you participated and tried your utmost. You played an important part. It was an experience for you. There is always a second and third time… They saying: “If at first you do not succeed, try again.” You deserve to be commended for your effort. I wish you good luck.

why is it that some people only visit DNO to look for negative things to say. My word, the competition was very good and the students did an good job. Congratulations to the organisers.

I am happy that we are finally accepting the Creole Language as it is a language around the world. I hope that some day soon we will be able to have our students learn the language at school like other creole speaking countries Guadeloupe, Martinique, mauritius, Seychelles just to name a few. I have a friend who did a bachelors degree in Creole.

Congrats to all the students especialy Paix Bouche

Congrats to Paix Bouche school. This school always excel in whatever competition they take part in. Congrats to the hard working principal and staff. On the other hand, I just wish students/pupils in Dominica would be able to speak proper English BEFORE they go on to learn the creole language.

      May 15, 2013

True! Even though it is a part of our culture I always beleive our children should be taught to master English as their first language before they learn any other.

      • La Fuente
        May 15, 2013

Apparently you forget to master yours. Go and learn to spell. Sort. Pathways ce Lange mama nou.

        May 16, 2013

Language is dynamic and so is English. The language rules changes with time. French was not born, it was developed as the conquered country did not learn Latin well and they formulated they own language from the latin.

      • wayne.c
        May 16, 2013

Dominicans are not that stupid they can’t master more than one thing at once. Children over the world are learning several languages at once, why limit us. If we do not promote creole it will die. It is near death anyway

    • La Fuente
      May 15, 2013

What’s wrong with learning both languages together? Don’t they also teach English in the primary school? you are missing the point of the exercise and sound ignorant. You seem to be still stuck in the massa days that thought us that everything original that we use to express ourselves is either, ignorant or immoral. Your comment in the end totally discredit your earlier congratulatory comments. The programme is to push one language not to make another look inferior. Remove your head from under the masters dress.

Well done little sista. It is good that there is such a strong initiative to keep patois alive. And it is a good idea to target the young kids too.

Too many of our children cannot even understand one sentence in patois. We got to do better…

This sort of speech is fed by absolute ignorance coupled with a whole lot of unintelligence.
