Parliamentarian calls on parents to invest more in their children

Johnson Drigo
Johnson Drigo

Parliamentary Representative for the Castle Bruce constituency Johnson Drigo, wants parents to invest more of their time and effort in their children and complement the School Child Friendly Initiative in having child Friendly homes.

Drigo made the remarks at a graduation ceremony for 22 students at the San Sauveur Primary School recently.

He said parents allow themselves to be distracted too easily.

“Parents are still too distracted. There are too many things that get a bit more important than the quality time with you children; especially those at school…the principal spoke of child friendly schools let us pick up child friendly homes,” he urged. “And make your home a classroom. Your primary mission over the next five years is to ensure that these children succeed …and you must be in it 24/7…you can never be too busy for that”, he remarked.

Drigo also mentioned that each child will be receiving financial support from the Government.

“Government will give each child here today, sometime next month, EC$ 500 to assist you the parents in meeting the needs of these children to get them to secondary school, this is government’s contribution to you”, he promised.

Featured speaker Cornelia Fontaine, encouraged students to make effective use of today’s technology and comforts.

“ Today graduates you are fortunate you do not have to endure all what many of us had to, you are all blessed with the luxury of today, being in the comfort of your home, not having to go down Basin Walingtan, Tou Mamam, Bois Migo, Layane to get water and to bathe every morning before you go to school.”

“Or take a ride on the trucks…sometimes you reach up you squeeze like when you put peas to soak overnight…rumpled up, tired …leaving at people’s homes… many of you have internet, television, parental support, love all you have to do is to work to achieve your goal…you have to identify what you have to do later in life, prioritize them in order of importance ad you begin to work your way through,” she stated.

A precedent well set. Mr. Drigo you need to let the rest of your Parl Reps colleagues know what’s the formula in accessing $500.00 for each primary school graduate in their respective constituencies!!!!

Sorry if I offend, however, it is a known fact that we gay men are more loving, tolerant, open-minded, humble and intelligent than most other men. Thus, it is only logical to deduce that we would make far better parents than a man and woman headed household! It is time to stop the ignorance and support gay marriage and adoption in Dominica. We all know that our beloved PM has a little sugar in his tank! Come on people!!!

Back in my day, my parents could not afford the books in high school and so my incentive was to work hard for a scholarship.

I worked my butt off. No tv. I studied long hours into the nights. I read a whole lot and on my breaks, if I wasn’t doing chores, I was catching up on sleep. But I was determined!

Thankfully to God, I got the scholarship which helped with my high school education expense for the first couple years I think before they stopped assisting monetarily. Thanks to those go went before me and passed down their used books for less.

    Assistance is wonderful.

I personally feel, children are more motivated when they are working toward a goal. They are more driven and determined.

So I do not understand the monetary assistance here and how it works. But I am hoping will be given as a motivator for the children. Yes, parents need to be there for their children and encourage them.

Yes, parents, you child loves to hear ‘Good job’ Or ‘ I am proud of you’. Those little words can make a big difference.

Again the politicians are misleading the people..NOT every child will receive $500..The money that has been allocated for the transfer grant program is not enough to give $500 to over 1200 students.

Negative comments again and words of discouragement. Are you a government employee and have privy to this information? How can you be sure? Are you insinuating that it is a lie? Common, be confident.

I am confused with the support system for children going to secondary school. A child gets $500.00 whether he or she passes to go to secondary school. A child comes top in the Grade 6 National Assessment Test and gets $500.00 worth of books, well bursars get less, can someone explain the rationale. Books are very expensive and more so its a scholarship/Bursary.
If I have it right isn’t that system encouraging mediocrity because children do not have to do well to get $500. maybe I have it all wrong; if I do can someone explain how its done.

The $500 is only for first form and I think it is for everyone if you wish to collect it. The secondary school scholarship is for throughout the secondary school: $500 a year for books, full payment of your CXC fees and a monthly transportation allowance.

Very Stupid comment, keep your gay story out of this. Marriage is between a man a woman have you not heard? Parents really need to take more responsibility for their children up bringing so we can have a better society in the future, with smart children and proud parents and bless country.

Yes and I will quote what the late, Blessed John Paul II said, soon to be canonized: “As the family goes so does the nation/world.” He was a family-oriented person. With communism in the land, his mother died first and then his father when he was young. He would echo and applaud your words.

  11. July 11, 2013

Honestly, if there were more gay parents in Dominica there would be a significant difference in children’s performance at school and in their overall character and behavior towards their peers and adults on a whole. Support gay marriage and adoption now!!!!

Please do not make me laugh sarcastically. You are joking. Have you thought of what you stated prior to making such a comment?
If there were more gays, how many children would there be in Dominica? How many children would be born in Dominica? Unless they are two-timers, wanting the better of two worlds as some do.
This would be the end of Dominica as more men practice this abomination; no exception women. Can two men have babies? Can two women have babies? You will have to help them have babies. Next time think before you comment.
This is what will happen to the world in time as this abomination permeates the entire world. I have always said that humanity will destroy themselves and as governments encourage this type of behavior.
