There was an air of vibrancy at the Arbeedee Cinema recently, as the staff, students and parents of the Portsmouth Secondary School (PSS) gathered to celebrate and reward students of the school at its Fourth Annual Reward Ceremony.

The principal, Ronald Austrie, reminded the students that they should be proud of their school’s outstanding performance at the 2013 CSEC examinations. “We are number one amongst all the government secondary schools and in sports,” he said. “We have been named the top school for the past five years.”

He also admonished his students to strive for excellence.

Dr. Jeffrey Blaize of the Ministry of Education gave a short address and commended the school for its thrust to motivate its students.

The featured speaker was Tamara Lowe, manager of Tropical Shipping, Dominica, and a past student of the PSS. She captured the attention of all present, as she cited personal experiences to impress upon her audience that humble beginnings should never be a deterrent to attaining success. She implored students to be driven by personal passion in setting and achieving their goals.

Talented teachers and students wowed those present with songs, dances and choral speech. Student musicians entertained throughout the ceremony.

Students were rewarded for excellent performance in the areas of:
•    Academics
•    Sports
•    Conduct
•    Deportment
•    Regularity and Punctuality
•    Most Improved

The Most Outstanding students at each level were:

•    Form 2: Darnisha Langlais
•    Form 3: Verlaner Boyer
•    Form 4: Kerchael Fan-Fan
•    Form 5: Kirdeisha Langlais

Sarah Austrie, Washway Douglas, and Giselle Laville were awarded special tokens of appreciation for their significant and ongoing contributions to the school.

The PSS thanks all those who contributed to the success of its annual Reward Ceremony, including the Douglas family, Ministry of Education officials, R. Panthier, parents, well wishers and Chevon Ambo of Ambo Visuals.

The school said it looks forward to continued support as it strives to achieve excellence.

Congratulations to PSS for supporting their own and choosing a past student to be the featured Speaker. The children were truly captivated and listened attentively to every word. When my little girl got home she spoke of how good it was to be able to relate to Ms. Lowe’s message and that she was going to try harder to succeed. Music to my ears! Congratulations to all the students who received awards and all the proud parents and teachers. Special thanks to Mrs. Ambo and Mr. Austrie. You are exemplary individuals and PSS is fortunate to have you.

Noticed Dr. Gregory Vidal posted a comment. A fellow PSS Grad, and one of the most accomplish alum of PSS. I wanted to take the time to let the students know that the sky is the limit. I remember our days of walking up to grange with shoes that had holes in their soles and now when I see the accomplishment (to date – more to come) of some of our past students like Dr. Vidal I am feel with joy and thankful to God for his many blessings. Students I encourage you to work hard and always put God first – He will bless you in ways that you cannot imagine. Dr. Vidal, and a number of our friends from PSS have consistently invested in our school and community and I wanted to recognize him in this forum for representing PSS well as he is on Staff at one of the US most prestigious universities practicing medicine and leading up research seeking cures for Cancer. Dr. Vidal I honor you in this forum and I am thankful for being associated with you and so many other friends from PSS who help support the hard work of our teachers and staff there. God bless you and family, God bless PSS and Forward on…

How come PSS is number 1 in government schools? Apart from Miss Corbette who got 9 ones, I haven’t heard of any outstanding performances from PSS at CSEC this year. What about those all students of PCSS? Wouldn’t that school be at the top?

You heard of a few students from PCSS, but what of the rest of the students. How well did they do. PSS this year has quite a few students who got five, six and seven grades ones at CSEC. And the rest of the students did very very well. This is why they are the number one public school. Keep on moving PSS.
