PSS triumphs in secondary schools debate

The Portsmouth Secondary School (PSS) has emerged victorious over the Goodwill Secondary School in the 5th annual Central Cooperative Credit Union and Kiwanis Club of Waitukubuli secondary school’s debate.

The debate took place at the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) Hall on Tuesday and saw Aymah George and Devon Brewster of the PSS gaining the upper hand by 37 points.

PSS proposed the topic “Is Volunteerism Still an Effective Way to Govern Credit Unions in These Times”.

George argued that because of many volunteers, the credit union movement was hardly affected during the financial crisis while the banks, which pay high salaries, are struggling to keep their heads above the water.

“It is imperative to note that the volunteers spend tremendous amount of time attending board meetings, community meetings, preparing accounts among other things. If volunteers were paid the average industrial wage for their time and efforts, the sums of money disbursed would be staggering,” she stated. “With many banks still paying exorbitant bonuses to their top level management, it is heartening that the selfless contribution of volunteers continues to shine while the banking system continues to struggle to stay afloat.”

Brewster of the PSS won the award for the Best speaker and his team received a total of 267 points.

Meantime, the team from the Goodwill Secondary School which comprised Kadijah Mennerville and Kaylyn Rodney got a total of 230 points.

Mennerville, who took the award for best rebuttal, argued that volunteerism is no longer the norm but a punishment.

“The time when the cost of living is sky high, is it practical to really believe that volunteerism is feasible? In these volatile climate? No, volunteering is no longer the norm. It is rather a punishment,” she argued. “When one considers the history of the Credit Union and what encouraged its birth, we must resoundingly agree that volunteerism was necessary and practical then, but how practical is it today?,” she stated.

It is unfortunate that Skeritt talks about the education of the youth and the millions his Government spends on building schools for the youth, they are taught to debate but Skeritt himself is scared of a debate. Their has been an invitation for him to take on Mr. Linton in a debate and with all his degree in education he is running scared of Mr. Linton. The next general elections will be the most keenly fought elections in the history of Dominica, Skeritt can run as far as he wants, he can hide on the moon, when he comes back to earth Mr. Linton will be waiting for him.
