Head of the Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute (HLSTUEI) of the UWI Open Campus, Danny Roberts, will be the presenter at the Sixth Annual NBD/UWI Open Campus Distinguished Lecture to be held later this week.

Roberts’ presentation will be titled: “Globalism and the Challenges of Labour: Prescriptions for Regional Competitiveness”.  He will examine how globalism has negatively impacted labour vis-a-vis capital and the exploitation inherent in this new phenomenon.  His lecture will counteract the idea that it is through exploitation of labour (contract work, no pension or social security benefits, wage stagnation) that competitiveness can be achieved in our region.

Roberts is a graduate of the UWI with a BA Honours in Communications with Social Sciences and a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Government.   He was the recipient of Jamaica’s fourth highest National Honour in 2009, the Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD) for his contribution to the trade union movement.

He has spent more than twenty years in the trade union movement serving as President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, Vice President of the National Workers Union, and President of the Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees.  He currently serves as Vice President of the umbrella trade union organization, the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions.

The NBD/UWI National Distinguished Lecture will provide an opportunity for guests to listen to the speaker present for about 45 minutes.  Following the presentation, guests will be able to interact and to generate meaningful discussions about the influence of the topic on the Caribbean region.

“UWI public lectures seek to provide fora for scholars to share their research with members of the public. They also encourage society’s engagement in significant conversation.” according to a release from the UWI Open Campus.

The Distinguished Lecture Series is hosted by The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Dominica, in collaboration with the National Bank of Dominica Ltd. (NBD) every year.

This year’s event will be held at the Conference Room, Fort Young Hotel on Thursday 30, 2013, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

It is free and open to the public.

Great topic for consideration. I am happy that the perspective of regional competitiveness is included particularly in the advent of CSME. UWI leads the way on issues of relavance to Caribbean society. The great University of the West Indies remains the University of choice in the region.
