The Roving Caregivers Programme (RCP) through ChildFund Caribbean its implementing agency in association with the Caribbean Child Support Initiative (CCSI) and the Bernard van Leer Foundation (BvLF) will be hosting a two-day Family Literacy Programme (FLP) workshop on Tuesday June 22 and Wednesday June 23 at the Public Service Union Building on Valley Road. The workshop which will be facilitated by family literacy consultant Dr. Joanie Cohen-Mitchell, seeks to improve the literacy competence of families and communities in the Commonwealth of Dominica.
FLP addresses the literacy strengths and needs of the family and community while promoting the involvement of adults in the education of children. It also recognises parents/guardians as having a powerful influence on a child’s future academic success. This concept is based on the rationale that caregivers (parents, teachers and adults) in communities are the first teachers of infants since much learning occurs before and beyond the traditional school setting. FLP assists families in reading, writing, numeracy and communication to accomplish everyday tasks. It also seeks to integrate interactive literacy learning activities for parents and their children so that parents can become full partners in their children’s education.
Based on the high level of interest displayed at the one-day consultation with FLP Regional Coordinator, Mrs. Fontana Anthony from St. Lucia and the participating organisations on March 17, it was decided that there was need for this two-day training session. Organisations to participate in the two-day workshop include the Roving Caregivers Programme (RCP), the Welfare Division, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Adult Education.
Wonderful……………..but schools should have been invited
