The Salisbury Primary School has described as “a tremendous success”, its 7th Annual ‘Literacy Awareness Week’ which was observed recently under the theme: “Literacy- not a Luxury, but a Right and Responsibility.”
This year’s theme sought to awaken in the students an awareness that: (1) Literacy should be viewed as a ‘basic need’ they are entitled to and (2) there are several stakeholders who are responsible for ensuring that the students become fully literate.
The literacy co-ordinator explained that there are several reasons for this yearly observance of ‘Literacy Awareness Week.’ It provides the students with the opportunity to show-case their literacy skills, gives the school an avenue for celebrating the literacy achievements and successes of its students and significantly provides the opportunity for stakeholders e.g parents, volunteers and well-wishers to become actively involved in the activities of the school.
During that week, through class presentations, students showcased their literacy skills by partaking in activities such as drama, impromptu speech, choral speech, reading, poetry, as well as creating literacy posters and slogans. A reading competition was also held in preparation for this year’s National Reading Competition. Additionally, parents, well-wishers and volunteers had the opportunity to read to the students.
The event ended with an Open Day/ Book Sale. Several awards were presented at the closing ceremony held on that day, including awards for Excellence in Literacy and Most Literacy Friendly Classroom.
Prizes were also given to the winners of the Poetry Competition, Best Poster, and the Reading Competition.
According to Salisbury school principal, Burton Vidal, the purpose of the open day was to give parents, well-wishers and visitors, an opportunity to view students’ work which was on display that day.
Used books were also sold to help raise funds for the improvement of the school.
The event was held from the 19th to the 23rd of March, 2012.
The principal and staff say they are grateful to all the parents, volunteers, visitors and well-wishers, who played a role in making ‘Literacy Awareness Week 2012’ such a memorable one.
