Semester at Sea Study Abroad Program comes to Dominica

The MV Explorer

More than 600 students, faculty, and staff of Semester at Sea (SAS), the United States’ premier shipboard program for study abroad, will arrive in Roseau at 8:00 a.m. on January 23, five days into their 105 day academic voyage around the world.

The MV Explorer is the state-of-the-art passenger ship that Semester at Sea has outfitted as a traveling university.

While in Dominica, students have the opportunity to go ocean kayaking, go on a whale and dolphin safari and visit Trafalgar Falls.  Four Faculty-Directed Practica will take place in Dominica, ranging from a Kalinago Indian visit to snorkeling in Champagne Reef.  These faculty-led programs offer SAS students the opportunity to explore a class topic with their professors and extend classroom learning.

Semester at Sea is a global study abroad program that traces its roots to 1963. Participants, who hail from more than 250 U.S. and international universities, circumnavigate the globe aboard the 24,300-ton campus of the MV Explorer, attend classes in a closely knit environment with an international faculty, complete fieldwork and travel while in port, and receive course credit from the University of Virginia, the academic sponsor.

The spring voyage departed Nassau, Bahamas on 19 January 2011 and will travel to international destinations including Roseau, Dominica; Manus, Brazil; Tema, Ghana; Cape Town, South Africa; Port Louis, Mauritius; Cochin, India; Singapore; Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam; Hong Kong, China; Shang Hai, China; Kobe, Japan; Yokohama, Japan and Hilo, Hawaii before returning to San Diego, California on 2 May.

This is the 108th voyage of Semester at Sea.

Over the years, Semester at Sea has achieved a number of significant milestones, including groundbreaking visits to countries such as the former Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, Cuba, and Myanmar, and participants have met with prominent leaders including Fidel Castro, Anwar Sadat, Indira Gandhi, Mikhail Gorbachev, Corazon Aquino, Sidi Mohammed, Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela.

You lots got a serious problem. Whats the argument about! Plzzzzz, this is a good thing for the country. These students actually spend money in the country, multipler effect “hello” Educate yourselves please, and if you make a contribution, make a valid one! Stop embarrasing yourselves and my beloved country. Duces!!!

This is so pitiful. We are on here arguing over the visit of some “study abroad” ship. Boasting we are the only Caribbean country on this voyage. Fact is in many other Caribbean islands people won’t even notice. That’s how “lowly” we think of ourselves.

We have such low esteem of our island that ANY attention from ANYTHING from the “developed world” is greeted with childlike excitement.

I suggest many of our bloggers start doing some serious reading from this site because the state of our Afro-Caribbean psyche is appalling and pathetic. http://www.africankingdoms.com

@TRUTH don’t worry…apparently many people have a hard time reading and understanding… i got a 1 in CXC english (back when cxc was CXC lol) and many classmates were surprised… well more so because they couldn’t get not even a 2… it is clear that Dominica is the only caribbean island on THIS journey….
